Talley was the key to that game.
The point was that Nick was not healthy so they needed Talley. He was the primary ball handler against a team that presses the whole game and did it with 5 assists to 2 turnovers. He also added a blocked shot and 4 rebounds. He scored 7 on an offensive rating of 103 and a defensive rating of 122.
Yeah, I remember him bringing the ball up against the press after WVU neglected him and Lindell and Donovan found him, but was that really something that Nick could not have done (if he was healthy) or Talen Horton-Tucker could not do this season?
We won that game because Wiggi and DJ shot out of their minds.

Why so combative?

Don't mess with the stat nerds. Their reality is irrefutable because they have numbers. Context be damned. Your point is a perfect illustration of where data falls short. Bringing the ball up against a forward as opposed to the best defender in the league created an advantage for ISU.
We didn't get to see it because we didn't need it, but I get the feeling that Shayok can be that guy (along with Wigginton, of course) that will throw the team on his back and go get some of these wins.
I agree, especially cause he was able to do that at Virginia. It sounds like Shayok was a very frustrating player at UVA because he would flash that ability, but was terribly inconsistent on the whole. Excited to see what he’ll do this year.
I don't know, S&C is a huge part of every basketball program and the results are often bantered about by successful coaches.
Minnesota wins Minnesota by default. How do they only have one D1 program?View attachment 59747
Where every team ranks in each state, from top to bottom
Iowa State
After an unavoidable step-back season, Cyclone fans are no doubt giddy and pumped to see their logo -- not an Iowa Hawkeye -- painted within state borders. Steve Prohm was able to keep sophomores Lindell Wigginton and Cam Lard on the program's path. There won't be many sophomore combos better than those two. Throw in senior wing Nick Weiler-Babb, a stat-stuffer extraordinaire, and this team's got NCAA tourney ambitions once again. Virginia transfer Marial Shayok's the X factor.

I didn't say anything about this year. I responded that Talley was the key to that game. We didn't have Nick or Talen for the game last year. WVU averaged 16.5 to's forced per game last year. Talley took over ball handling duties against their press when our only PG was out and we had 8 turnovers in that game. WV averaged over 8 steals per game last year which they usually turned into easy points. With Talley handling the ball WV only got 2 steals in the game. Two! That is depriving Huggy's squad of a lot of their easy offense. His ball security allowed other guys to go off behind the arc. If he didn't it is doubtful that they would have gotten almost 20 opportunities from 3. Besides, ISU won that game by 16. Can't there be more than one thing that helps a team win a game by double digits?I was planning on us having Nick against WVU again this season. If we do not have him for some reason, I figure we are kind of screwed by that point anyways.
Just saying -- if your need is a 6'6" or 6'7" wing with a good handle to break the press, we are not lacking for options for that niche given our roster this season.
We won that game because we shot the lights out.
We were 10/18 from three!
The cardinal and gold will not lose many games when we hit threes at that rate.

That’s the best succinct write up of this team I’ve seen from a national source.View attachment 59747

You're expecting a lot of a guy coming off an 8 points/game average at UVA compared to an all-conference shooting guard that's likely headed to the NBA next season, Wiggs.![]()
9 points/game was good enough for 3rd on the 16-17 VA team so it's not that far off.
Wiggs can score but I hope this year he can distribute a bit more due to what's around him.
