Expectations for 2018-2019

I wasn't impressed with Jacboson's defense at all. He's not a rim protector and especially struggled to help on the backside several times when they'd run a mini pick and roll or other motion towards the hoop. We are going to get abused in the low post for the next few weeks defensively and offensively (he also has zero hops and not exactly as creative as Georges to make up for it), but hopefully we can shoot our way and defend the perimeter enough to get some W's over this 1st month until we can get some proper posts in there.

Jacobson has better than zero hops. He had a 33 inch vertical after his freshman season. Maybe that’s come down a little or maybe it doesn’t equate perfectly to in-game jumping, but you’re exaggerating things. For being a 5 he’s got good enough hops. His rebound percentage is only surpassed by guys like Lard, McKay, and Hogue, and is similar to Ejim (as was his overall game last night). Great efficiency and if his shooting continues, a nice complement to what Lard brings.

When combined with Lard, Young, Talley, Conditt, and Zion our front court is as versatile as any outside the elite teams.

One thing I don't get is why people think Haliburton is too skinny for the Big 12. He isn't a big. Look how effective Monte was when he was a freshman. He has already put on a lot of muscle. I think he is going to have a great freshman year. I loved him as a recruit.

I was surprised at the many people last night who were surprised that Haliburton is skinny. His length is going to be a huge asset the next 4 years and it was reassuring for him to back up the good off season report with a great game to start to his career.

Opposing coaches like Huggy will have their guys mug him, but he’ll adjust.

He’s been rightfully compared to DG, and it appears like that high praise may be underselling his game imo. He has junior-year DG game already, albeit with better backcourt teammates than DG had. DG was also smothered by McDermott whereas Haliburton has Prohm.

Agree to disagree on the hops. There were some nifty passes that Lard or Young would have flushed before a defender could challenge that he barely even got his shot off against some very light competition. That's just a one-game opinion so I hope to rewire that after some explosive plays and help defense from him the next few games until the starters return.

Kinda harsh for a guy who led the team in scoring and rebounding in his first game. He's not supposed to be option A, B or C. We need a very solid support player for A, B and C, and we got one.

the halliburton DG comparison bugs me - the only thing those two have in common is being skinny and from wisconsin, that's it. their games are entirely different and Tyrese is way more skilled and a much more versatile player.

Saying their games are entirely different is way worse of an evaluation than saying they’re comparable players.

We often see what we expect to see.

I saw a guy that’s just a notch below the Lard types in rebounding and a guy that’s been taught that when you’re 6’9” and can jump, you should not to rush the finish.

Seems right,,, other than Iowa
.
I assume KenPalm is factoring CYHAWK game in it is in EIU. Unfortunately for Iowa, Carver isn't a home court advantage and I expect a 5 pt win after my personal adjustment. ;-)

Really good skinny basketball players have been around forever. A couple even make it in the NBA! The “needs to bulk up” jerk off circle is more annoying than anything in the cave.

Yeah I mean he'll naturally bulk up some and I'm not saying it won't be helpful. But he doesn't need to put on 30+ lbs to be a really good 4 year player for us. He's about 170 lbs right now and I doubt he ever weighs more than 185 in his time here. Which is fine.

That was always my dislike of some posts assuming both Haliburton and Conditt would or even should red shirt. Let the guys play and prove they would need it prior to even suggesting it. If you produce at any size, Thin or over wight, tall or short, then you should see the floor. From what I saw Tuesday, I think both can contribute early and probably will.

Both have improved their bodies since the committed and are at sizes that can contribute this year. They both will need to continue to add strength to eventually be B12 starter size but can come off the bench. Credit to them for putting the work in.

I think many people are still stuck in the 90s when "basketbrawl" was the rule of the day. The game is much more fluid and open than it was in the past.

Having size and strength was more important then. I think the game has definitely evolved in a way where length, skill, speed, and shooting matters much more.
