Expectations for 2018-2019

I've read his sentence at least ten times and still can't decipher what he was trying to say? He doesn't like WVU's chances this year, that's the first phrase, then he says Huggy can develop talent, okay, but what's the rest of it mean? He can take recruits that were graded 7th place talent, get them to play to a 4th/5th place finish because of the press? I mean it's hard to understand.

I have the opposite feeling on WV, Huggy can develop talent and coach up a top 7 talent team up to a top 4-5 finish playing his Press Virginia style.

Relax... awkwardly I was trying to say Huggy is a better developer of talent than Shocka. WV plays as a team and will over achieve their talent. Shocka's teams has great individual players that struggle to define roles and play together in my opinion.

Sorry I didn't include any opinions on KSU and Weber, Surley.

Stinson missed starting 7 games in his career - at least one in each of his three years.

Will Blalock only missed one start his freshman year and played for 3 years.

I know it is really hard to come in to start as a true freshman and never have to sit out a game for injury or get yourself suspended, even for a minor thing like being late to practice or some general tomfoolery, that might put you on the bench for a game or two to start.

I cannot think of anybody who has really done it.

This site's analytics are fun to see; they have us at 11th in the country (8th offense, 26th defense).

Wow, that is really optimistic.

Really.

Well, we certainly agree on Shaka Smart's talent and schemes v. Huggs. As for K-State, I'm sure I'd enjoy the read, so have at it.

The consensus on here before the season was an eight-man rotation of NWB, Wigginton, Horton-Tucker, Shayok, Talley, Jacobson, Young, and Lard.

We are down three of those.

I imagine our starting lineup on Tuesday night is going to be...

NWB
Wigginton
Horton-Tucker
Shayok
Jacobson

...and, after that, we are going to have the other three freshmen and Lewis off the bench.

I kind of wonder who plays the most next. Experience says Lewis, positional need says Conditt, the scrimmage says Haliburton, and athleticism says Griffin.

It will be an interesting tune up for Mizzou and Maui.

I like that lineup. It reminds me of the four-guard lineup with Deonte Burton at the 4 that we ran two years ago (only with more experience at the 5). Jacobson is free to concentrate on defense and rebounds in such a lineup, cleaning up the trash on the boards.

I imagine Horton-Tucker might never go to the bench if he is as productive as he can be, and his stat line from the Nebraska scrimmage was very encouraging.

Question -- who was the last Cyclone to start every game of his career from his freshman season onward? I know Hogue did it as a JUCO for two years, and Wigginton is on his way to doing it, but who else has done it lately for at least 2-3 years? Anybody?

I remember Brackins coming off the bench a few times for being late to practice. I remember Fred started Godfrey over Melvin a few times his freshman year, too.

Georges, Monté, and Matt obviously did not do it.

So... who? Anybody?

Was Fred a 4 year starter, or did he start right away? I think he still missed a start under Floyd for being late to a meeting or something. Was almost funny when it happened because he was so unblemished.

Fred started 123 games out of 126.
He didn’t start 2 games his freshman year and 1 game his Junior year.

The answer is Adam Haluska, even though he's more of a traitor than a Cyclone. He started 31/31 games his freshman year.

That game where he came back was brutal, there have been some loud crowds between him and that Pierce(?) kid (the rape guy).

ISU Missou #15 opening week games for 2018-19.

This game lost some of its luster once Jontay Porter, Missouri’s best player, went down with a season ending knee injury, but it should still qualify as one of the 15 best opening week games. The Tigers will have to rely on sophomore center Jeremiah Tilmon and senior PF Kevin Puryear to pick up the slack in the frontcourt.

Missouri looked like it would rely on its frontcourt to remain in NCAA Tournament contention, but the backcourt must now outperform expectations. Senior PG Jordan Geist is the only returning player and he will assume more offensive responsibility this season. Incoming wings Torrence Watson and KJ Santos are poised for prominent roles as well. Joining them on the wing is Illinois transfer Mark Smith who recently received an unexpected waiver deeming him immediately eligible.

Iowa State is due for a bounce-back season after rebuilding in 17-18. Starting guards Lindell Wigginton and Nick Weiler-Babb earned invaluable experience and are now two of the best guards in the Big 12. Center Cameron Lard is one of the most underrated players in the country as he is an excellent interior scorer.

The Cyclones should climb the standings because they’ve bolstered their depth and return many key pieces from last season. However, the impact of adding Marial Shayok should not be overlooked. Shayok was a consistent rotation player at Virginia who should be able to show his full offensive capabilities now that he is not bound by the constraints of the Cavaliers’ offense.

Last season, Missouri emerged from the SEC basement to make the NCAA Tournament while Iowa State fell from a NCAA Tournament mainstay to last place in the Big 12. This season, the roles should be reversed. Missouri would have been in the mix for a return trip to the Big Dance, but the injury to Porter has made this unlikely. Iowa State dealt with losing 4 starters from their 16-17 team, but with the improved talent and roster continuity, they should return to relevance.

Prediction: Iowa State over Missouri

I'm relieved to learn that Misery lost a key player but ISU will be at full strength for this game.

Anybody want to make one of these with 21 strips to tear off...?

26th best team, but only a 42% chance to make the tournament? That seems odd.

The distribution is kind of "flat" right now -- lots of teams with decent chances to make the tournament, say between 20% and 80%, not a lot of teams that have played themselves into the "check mark" of 90%+ or played themselves out.

As the season goes on, and we learn more and more about the teams (and more of their record is "locked in" with actual games), then the percentages are going to move around. It is going to be kind of uninformed earlier on in the season.

OK, well now without Solo, without Talley, without Lard, all of our "expectations for 2018 - 2019" previously posted are essentially null and void. But we still have a lot of good players, just not the deep roster we had counted on when we started this thread. Where do I get one of those nut cups?
