Expectations for 2018-2019

Are we on the pretend train where getting ripped and being huge means anything in basketball? We are Iowa State.

"Getting ripped and being huge" doesn'r mean you're a good basketball player, but you're off if you don't think it helps, especially for freshman and sophomores trying to play in one of the fastest and most physical leagues in the country.

Have you ever watched Iowa play? There's a reason they can't hang. They run Nicholas Baer and Jordan Bohannon out there and expect them to keep up.

It takes exceptional skill and leaping ability to overcome a lack of size.

Without seeing them play yet, I was wondering how this team ranks top to bottom as far as best player to last. Very subjective guess at this point but here is my list: Wigginton, Lard, Shayok, Weiler-Babb, Young, Talley, Horton-Tucker, Lewis, Jacobson, Haliburton, Griffin, Conditt.

And I think Conditt will be a really good player someday, but it's just hard with his small build and inexperience to compete at this level yet. Clearly, once they play some games this list will change. But I just find it exciting that we have this many legitimate potential players.

In terms of the college game and having a well-rounded skill set:

1. Shayok
2. Wigginton
3. Lard (considering how raw his game is, this is kinda amazing)
4. Weiler-Babb
5. Horton-Tucker
6. Talley
7. Young
8. Jacobson
9. Haliburton
10. Griffin
11. Lewis
12. Conditt

This was pretty tough.

Just so you know, he's actually laughing at you in this picture. :)

It's actually a good point and it seems like Lewis is in a spot that he's going to need to fight for, but perhaps that's a good thing. I'd like to see him at a point where he's reacting without thinking.
Also, Clayton Custer says hi

Someone in one of the bball threads was hoping Lard's a stud this year.

He's already a stud. It's just the typical task of being consistent and getting timing down for defense/avoiding fouls.

There's an ability and grit there that hasn't been seen in the post at ISU very often.

It wasn’t his physical stature that stopped Lewis from doing anything last year.

Holding a gun to my own head and forcing myself to rank a predicted +/- or PER or something like that for the upcoming season would be...

Wigginton
Weiler-Babb
Lard
Shayok
Young
Talley
Jacobson
Horton-Tucker

...assuming these eight are our major rotational players.
If that ends up being the order we’re going to be Final Four caliber.

It’s going to be tough for a guard to beat Lard in PER imo. Even as an “inconsistent” freshman Lard had really good efficiency and impact numbers. It’s exciting to think he could be improved, and that Jacobson could be a similar player in terms of having an impact without needing volume

I am hoping/presuming that Wigginton is going to be a MONSTER. The kid was born to get buckets as much as any player in Iowa State history.

With Nick, I assume he is going to be quietly consistent on offense, suck down a lot of rebounds, and deal out a lost of assists. A do everything jack-of-all-trades that efficiency metrics are going to like, especially for his rebounding.

Lard will be the Lard you describe.

So yes, if that happens, or even if only one of them beats Lard, this is a really good team.

I betcha it was. I’ve seen Conditt’s highlights. I’d have a hard time putting him last.

For that matter, he’s got far better all around basketball skills than Lard does, whose skill set more or less starts with “rebound” and ends with “dunk”, mixed with a goodly helping of “score around the basket”.

As far as athleticism is concerned, George is still too skinny—but I don’t think there’s a huge gap between the two in running and jumping...although of course, Lard is pretty much a freak physically.

Efficiency metrics LOVE guys like that, though --

Generate their own possessions
Rarely turn the ball over
Pretty much rebound/shoot or pass back out
Shoot a really high TS%
Tend to get fouled often, too
= mega-efficient player

Even a guard who drills 40% of his 3PT shots has a hard time keeping up in efficiency metrics with a big man bringing in a respectable amount on the offensive boards.

"Good" Lard with Morris, NML, Thomas, and Burton would have been a Top 5 team.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Conditt never matches Lards freshman numbers in any season of his time here.

So true. Lard on the the Ejim/Kane team are national champ favorites going into the tournament.

If our guards are near Lard’s PER from a year ago we will be as good as any under Prohm. Last year, Wigginton and DJ were 15.9 and 13.5, with Lard 25.3.

Monté had a PER of 24.7 as a senior.

Kane was 22.0 in his one season in Ames.

Those are probably the two best guards we have had since Jamaal Tinsley. I would have taken either of them as seniors over Stinson and Blalock.

Lard as a freshman was still better than each of them on PER grounds.

I didn't know where to ask this, so I suppose this is as good of a place as any. Has anyone heard how well THT is gelling with the rest of the team? I don't think I saw him with the rest of the guys in the picture of the team at the Akron game posted on the MBB twitter. I also don't remember seeing him at the NBA game last night where every other player was, but it could also be that I don't recognize him yet due to limited exposure.

He took a picture with Derek Rose so he was at the game. That’s all I got

He was at the NBA game. He posted a bunch of pictures with him and Derrick Rose and other Cyclones.

NWB and Cam weren't in that photo either. And he was at the game yesterday, got a picture with D Rose after the game like Forb said.

He certainly doesn't seem like a guy who would have a problem gelling. Very humble. I think we'll have great chemistry with the guys that Coach Prohm brings in.

I saw Cam, Nick, and Shayok together by the East Gate before the Akron game. They were wearing gold, seemed to be having a good time together.

A little kid pushing a toy shopping cart came kind of close to Cameron, and he wigged out and acted like the kid hit him and seriously injured him somehow.

Flopper.
