Expectations for 2018-2019

Just so you know, he's actually laughing at you in this picture. :)

It's actually a good point and it seems like Lewis is in a spot that he's going to need to fight for, but perhaps that's a good thing. I'd like to see him at a point where he's reacting without thinking.

They would have the same path to success, too --

Rangy and long guard-wing who drills a lot of threes.

If Lewis shoots 40% next season, which he exceeded in the past five games of the year last year when playing significant minutes, he is going to be hard to sit.

Not like we have an excess of shooting on this roster.

Yeah, I'm just saying that Naz is more the exception whereas Sherron Dorsey-Walker is more the rule. I think Naz's unlimited confidence helped him a lot through that situation.

The difference imo is that Naz was a full grown man at that age. Lewis is still developing. He'll need to improve his awareness and defense to see the floor.

I’d be surprised if we play more than 20 minutes a game with two bigs in the game, which means one of Solo or Jake would be the 8th or 9th guy rather than a regular rotation member. I suspect THT will play a lot of 4 since we have good rebounding guards and since he may be a little weak defensively on the perimeter. Hopefully he’s good enough to switch 1-4 even if he’s not going to be chasing B12 wings around the perimeter all the time. Barring significant offseason improvement, Solo and to a lesser extent Talley have some weaknesses that limit your offense when they’re playing outside in a 4 out 1 in set.

Lewis will be interesting. He’s got a solid prospect pedigree, and he showed some things at the end of last season, but the odds are against him. I think we're a tournament and it's actually kind of rare for a guy to have a mediocre freshman season like that and turn into a contributor on a good team in a year.

I think the big 4's will be situational. If we need to bang down low, we can do that with them. If we need to spread someone out, we'll go another route. Just depends on the match ups IMO.

Who knows where I read/heard it but weren't they hoping that Lewis might develop into a PG?

I think it would be unfair, and also in other ways, selling Lewis short to ask him to be another Naz. He may not be the deadly sniper that Naz was, but he's got other abilities (and size) that Naz didn't naturally have. When he gets it all going, I think he's got incredible potential.

Agree overall, but it’s all in having a good comparison. Not a lot of freshmen with limited minutes have stayed going back 20 years.

I’d feel a lot better about Lewis making what looks like a big jump if as a freshman he played out of position behind three seniors like Naz. Adding a skillset doesn’t hurt either. Can Lewis improve his handle like Naz did his shooting? And like you mentioned, Naz also had extreme confidence that helped him play to his potential.

I think Lewis could easily be like Thomas or Naz from 2013-14, but he’s competing against more guys. Thomas and Naz were part of a 7 guy rotation in which the starting wing (Hogue) was the backup post. Lewis has NWB, Wigginton, Shayok, THT, Haliburton, and even Talley. And we won’t need to have THT, Shayok, or Talley to slide over to the 4 spot.
2019-20 is a year in which he could easily be a major minutes guy.

Lewis actually had a higher conference 3P% than Naz did in 2013-14, albeit on nearly a 1/4 of the attempts.

I agree, it was Terrence's freshman year adjusting to Big 12 competition. That is a big step up from Prep ball in Wisconsin. He has major potential and this is a big year for him to capitalize on the opportunity, the team is in need of shooters. Lewis ended the season playing better, his 3 ball was starting to splash in the the last few games once he got some playing time. If he was ranked as a high 3 star instead of a low 4 I don't think anyone would be worried.

Lewis is going to be that guy off the bench who averages 6 points a game but will toss in 2-3 games closer to 20 when he gets hot from the corner. I expect him to take on a much bigger role his junior and senior year.

Otherwise known as the Dion Waiters Heat Check performance of the week.

Plays 14 minutes, 4/6 from three, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls, maybe 1-2 lowlights on defense

And we all loved him for it.

While Lewis has a lot to go up against for playing time this year, the Red Sea parts after this coming season. We are likely losing four rotational guys at the guard wing between Weiler-Babb, Talley, Shayok, and Wigginton. Yes, there will be talent coming back and coming in, but there will not be the seniority and experience in the backcourt like we have right now. If he is even showing flashes, that is a great chance for him to finally seize a spot in the rotation.

Sucks to only really bloom as a junior for a guy, but it worked out for Matt Thomas, who was on the same transfer watch and whipping boy post until his junior season.

He worked out pretty well after a slow start.

Watching Lewis this summer, he has put on some muscle. I don't think he realizes how physically gifted he is. If he figures it out, he could be a real surprise.

Go back and take a good look at Naz. The guy was absolutely ripped. As I recall, his father, Jersey Long, was a former inter-continental kickboxing champ and said, “When I was watching him (Naz) practice, he reminded me of a young Cassius Clay. ”Without exaggerating, he reminded me of Muhammad Ali when he was young. He had that same type of demeanor.”

The point being that nobody worked out any harder than Naz! That is the type of drive and determination it takes to get to the next level.

Without seeing them play yet, I was wondering how this team ranks top to bottom as far as best player to last. Very subjective guess at this point but here is my list: Wigginton, Lard, Shayok, Weiler-Babb, Young, Talley, Horton-Tucker, Lewis, Jacobson, Haliburton, Griffin, Conditt.

And I think Conditt will be a really good player someday, but it's just hard with his small build and inexperience to compete at this level yet. Clearly, once they play some games this list will change. But I just find it exciting that we have this many legitimate potential players.

"Best player" is obviously subjective. With that said, I think you have Solo wayyyyyy too high. Talley, THT definitely need to be higher. I'd put Solo near last. He's not a good rebounder for his size and his impact on wins is minimal. He's a decent defender that lacks fast twitch and lateral abilities. Next to a black hole on offense. The majority of guys on this team impact winning more than him (don't mean to beat up on him).

Good List, though I would project THT as 3 behind Lard. He may not start day 1 out of respect to vet players but once he fully adjusts I think he'll be in line for starters minutes. I understand wanting to see it first before giving him that rank.

Holding a gun to my own head and forcing myself to rank a predicted +/- or PER or something like that for the upcoming season would be...

Wigginton
Weiler-Babb
Lard
Shayok
Young
Talley
Jacobson
Horton-Tucker

...assuming these eight are our major rotational players.
