Expectations for 2018-2019

Yeah, I didn't think the "bottom half, but still ahead of Iowa St" statement through. It will be close though. I really can't see Iowa St higher than 5th though.

Interested to see what people project. 1. Kansas 2. KState and then I think there's no right answers...

Texas Tech returns the two stud freshmen (unless Zhaire Smith blows up even more the next few weeks). But they lose their all american and have many other key seniors. Will be a much different squad next year.

West Virginia loses their back court staples. Don't bet against Huggins but if they lose Ahmad in addition to Carter and Miles they could be looking at a down year. I think Bolden, like DJack, might be better in a bench role rather than as a primary option as a starter due to his physical limitations.

TCU loses Brodziansky and Williams but I tend to think they'll still be an upper half team because of their talented & experienced back court. Hopefully Fisher can stay healthy next year.

Who knows on Oklahoma post Trae Young and they lose Lattin. They don't really have much immediate help coming in right now but maybe McGusty breaks out and can be an all-conference caliber player next year. Likely a bottom half big 12 team preseason though.

Texas has a lot of moving parts. Andrew Jones? Does Kerwin Roach turn pro? Eric Davis Jr? Mo Bamba gone. They have a good class coming in with a couple immediate contributors but no 1 and done talent this year (not that it's helped). I'm sure they'll projected high preseason though ;)

We discussed Baylor.

Oklahoma State will be rebuilding. Sounds like they might lose Tarvarius Shine in addition to Carroll, Solomon, and Kendall Smith. Can pencil them in as 10th right now.

1. KU (until someone proves otherwise)
2. Kansas State (everything back)
3. Texas (has to happen sometime, right?)
4. Iowa State (I'm buying)
5. TCU (good talent returning)
6. Texas Tech (young guys are good, but they lost a lot)
7. West Virginia (Miles and Carter are huge losses, as would be Ahmad)
8. OU (probably stepped back watching Young play, but still a lot of talent there)
9. Baylor (they hung on by their teeth this year and lose a lot)
10. Oklahoma State (because someone has to be last)

Very fair. I think it would be reasonable to have ISU anywhere from 4-6 right now. Will have to see on some pending departures across the conference as well as who hits on the transfer market this spring.

Will there be any coaching changes in the big 12? I kind of doubt it unless someone like Shaka bolts. Or drew, it was rumored he was looking last year.

I agree on the 4 to 6 range, and I also agree that it gets tough after KU and KSU. There will probably be more of a difference 1-10 than there was last year, but not a lot of difference 3-8 or so (depending on how the offseason shakes out, obviously). Definitely a lot more question marks for teams not named ISU than there was this year.

This is an interesting list and I can see it ending up this way.

I doubt that the media/coachs will place ISU in the top 7 before the season though.
Most of us here are aware of the incoming talent and the ceiling next years team has but I doubt outsiders will predict the 10th team to finish in the top 5 of conference when the only Wigginton, NWB and Lard returning to their starting roles. Next years team will have a lot of unknowns for the voter who don't follow ISU closely and expect a massive improvement.
Remember a lot of Fred's teams were predicted to finish 7-8th preseason due to the transfers being unknown to the B12.

At least Fran notices!

I think you have K State too high because of the Weber factor

I wonder if Boynton gets looks from SEC or ACC schools, or if UConn fires Ollie.

Been thinking about this: Are Lard and Wigginton the best Freshman duo ever at ISU? The only contenders I could think of off the top of my head are Fred and Julius and Stinson and Blalock

They are dang good, certainly.

The fact they have virtually nothing ahead of them, so they have ample playing time to rack up stats and pretty much stay in even when they make mistakes or get in foul trouble, helps them, though. They are not stuck behind a Kane or Ejim at the moment.

They might have been held back a little on a more rounded roster. Imagine Craig Brackins if you dropped him in instead of Lard and you might get the same result.

True, though they certainly played under more pressure than most freshmen. The Stinson/Blalock and Hoiberg/Michalik comparisons are probably good.

They're the highest scoring freshman duo in school history, at the least.

Hoping @big12basketblog does complete roster breakdowns with team projections for next year after the season

I saw this I was tagged in this post, and it gave me an idea, which I've tweeted about here. https://twitter.com/Big12BasketBlog

Pulling together some data on my end and using the great barttorvik.com site, I've put together a Google Sheet on Big 12 rosters for the 2019 season. Each team has their own page, where the barttorvik.com early preseason projections are shown for the 2019 season (with a link to his page which everyone should absolutely check out as it's a great site). Also shown on each team page is information such as scholarships by class, graduating seniors, sit-out transfers set to play, incoming recruits, projected lineups, and more. Check it out. I think you'll enjoy it.

Yep, I don't care how much better depth or experience we'll have, expectations should be taken with a grain of salt due to all the things (like injuries, suspensions, etc.) that can happen. We will still need our key players healthy and producing. I don't think Texas Tech loses to Baylor and OkState this past week if Keenan Evans doesn't go down, much less Zach Smith. Really thought they would have won the big12 til then, KU or no KU.
Mark my word:T
What are realistic expectations for next years team? I hate looking past the rest of this season, especially for a guy like Donovan, but this year is just a couple games from being over with the likelihood of no post-season play.

Hines responded to someone on twitter recently telling them to maybe back off on the expectation of being in the tournament for sure (maybe I misinterpreted what he said, but it's how I took it). Blum on the radio show this week made it sound like next years team could contend for the conference next year. I'm probably somewhere in the middle; if I had to guess today, I would pick them anywhere from 4th-7th in the conference.

The encouraging thing is that our two best players are freshman. Wigginton and Lard should only get better. All reviews seem to point to Shayok being really good. Talen Horton-Tucker should be another great freshman player.

However, there are still questions. How do we handle the PG position; will it be Lindell or Babb? Will we have a reliable 3 point threat; can Lewis be that guy? Can Zion crack the rotation?
Mark my word: THT will be a game-changer

the only reason prohm should get a little pass is because of injuries.
he seems like a really bad coach to me
i do acknowledge his recruiting is okay
does he even coach offense?
the big 12 is terrible year after year in the big dance
will be even worst this year
we finished 10th dead last in a very crappy conference
serious post here i really think he is bad
i so hope im wrong and you can pull this post back up next year and the whole board can laugh at me; ill laugh at myself
we finally saw a little anger from him in the oklahoma game; he was mad at brace for doing something or other; this whole golly gee lets be humble; whatever you get paid the big bucks at a premier basketball school wake up man and start exerting your will
the monte and niang year he was like well im not going to change anything; im not going to exert my will at all this is about the players blah blah
you are paid to manage this team; manage them
