Expectations for 2018-2019

DJ was good offensively, but limited defensively due to size (at least playing major minutes).

Shayok was UVA's second best offensive scorer on a team that didn't score a lot. I think his defense and rebounding will at least offset what we lose in scoring from DJ.

I also think Shayok will compliment Wigginton better. With DJ and Wigginton on the court together, it was two SG's that are both under 6'2". That's a pretty short line up defensively. Shayok will be able to guard the opposing teams best wing, which is something DJ struggled to do.

Also with DJ, even though he was usually a very good shooter, he was all or nothing because he had very little way to score when his outside shot wasn't falling. Shayok can get to the rim and shoot the 3. Similar to Wigginton.

You figure as a UVA and Bennett guy, Shayok is not going to have holes in this game. He might not do anything spectacularly, but he will do everything well.

I hope he pulls an, "Look at me, I'm the captain now," on the rest of the team, too.

Why do a lot of folks think Shayok is going to be so much better than DJ? Why did he leave UVA? I mean I hope he is but I think maybe we are under valuing DJ. If someone can inform me why Shayok is expected to be so much better thanks in advance.

I would say "more well rounded" than DJ. DJ gives you mostly outside shooting. Shayok has better size, better strength and is a better defender (and can shoot acceptably well outside). Unfortunately for DJ, we haven't had those other scorers that forced teams to help off him, so he's been blanketed and effectively removed from the offense in several games. Shayok is probably far less likely to give you 25, but also far less likely to give you 3, and will be helped by the fact that we should have more options next year.

This was a team this year that easily could been NIT team if weren’t for some worst injury luck I’ve seen in while. WTS, LW will refine his game in year 2 as will Lard and with a healthy Babb that Trio is a pretty darn good trio.

Now take away Beverly and Brase, 2 guys who honestly aren’t Big 12 material and replace them with Shayok who was 6th man on top 10 VA team who can score...a lot...and plays darn good D as well as Jacobsen who averaged 7pts and 6reb a game in the BIG....Now throw in 2 HS kids in THT and Griffin who both will play and one might be best recruit we’ve gotten here since Niang and you have yourself more than a bubble team IMO.

Shayok should be a great addition, a definite gain on defense, but on offense he may not work as efficiently with Wigginton and NWB imo. Shayok and Wigginton have usage percentages that are high and efficiency numbers low, but with Shayok having a much lower 3P attempt rate in 16-17. Shayok in his last year at UVa needed the ball in his hands. Of course, Deandre Kane was similar at Marshall, but there was a lot of backcourt usage available when he came to ISU.

Imo our biggest weakness on offense is how inefficient our high usage guards are. Hopefully that gets better next year.

Yeah, I know its old 'should forget about it' news, but just think if we would have had Juiston instead of Beverly or Brase. He only had 23 pts. and 18 rebounds the other night. Guy is a rebounding machine. Prohm sure had the guy pegged he wanted, put in the tireless work, just not the 'UNLV lure' I guess. But cheers for hopefully a great improvement with next year's crew.

Depends whether we have Steve or Jeff coaching next year.

There’s a lot of returning talent. More possibilities:
TT: Culver
Baylor: Clark
Okie St: McGriff
TCU: Robinson, Miller, Bane, Noi
OU: Manek

Iowa State: NWB

Really? I think both are back. Especially Ahmad.

Put me down for Brown (Kstate), Wigginton (ISU), Lawson (KU), Konate (WV), Azubuike (KU)

K-State is pretty dang loaded next year along woth KU. Baylor and Okie State could have tough years.

We are absolutely in the tournament if Wigginton made first-team all-Big 12. They would not put him that high unless the team was in the top half.

Most people have said it already. Improvement in average level of talent, improvement in starting 5, more bench strength (I expect way more than the 3 to 7 bench points we got in most games this year) and more experience. My big question marks are health (will Babb and Young really be healthy next year) and my biggest question by far, who will the team leader be? Who will be the Ejim, the Mitrou-Long, the Morris, etc. That was clearly lacking this year. My less big question will be Lard's focus. If he could control his emotions a bit better, then I think this team will be very, very hard to beat - top 3 maybe. But if he is up and down, we are only top 50%.

Having said that, I can't even predict which grocery line will be fastest, so anything I predict is worth about nadda!!
