Expectations for 2018-2019

I think coaches and media throw them a bone. Zhaire Smith and Culvert coming back are huge for them. They're 2nd and 3rd on the team in scoring.

Yeah those kids are studs. It is crazy they weren't more heavily recruited. Pretty sure any team in the country would take Zhaire Smith now. Looks like they also got a couple good recruits coming in next year as well.

Ahmad should come back but he almost left last year and then he was out the first semester because of academics. I can see him leaving because it appears he just doesn't want to be in school. I don't think Azubuike is going anywhere.

Top 2-4 in the conference. 3-6 seed in the tournament.

Listen, Kansas will be a top ten caliber of team yet again. Until KU gets knocked off you have to assume they win the conference. After that, who hands down has more talent than Iowa State next year? No reason why we can't challenge for top 3 in the conference.

West Virginia loses Carter and Miles
OU will lose Young and Lattin
Texas loses Bamba
TTech loses Evans, Gray and Smith
TCU loses Brodz and Williams

Shayok from all reports has a chance to be our best all around player next year. Horton-Tucker is a big time recruit. I don't think he will put up similar numbers as Wigginton this year simply because he won't need to.

As of right now you can pencil in a rotation of Babb, Wigginton, Shayok, Lard, Young, THT, Talley, Jacobsen.

Wigg, Lard and Babb are among the best returning players...Shayok is as good as any transfer...and top 25 recruiting class is ranked 3rd among Big 12 classes.

It's hard not to be optimistic when you return some of the best and are bringing in among the best.

I think we have an extra 2-3 wins if our core players had been healthy this year...injury bug is the big unknown in all of sports.

I suppose he could leave and just enter the G league or start his pro career elsewhere. That is fair. My earlier comment was more alluding to that he has close to no chance of being drafted this spring. That would be a lot to lose in one year if you are West Virginia.

Well lets see. For a starting 5 we will have Shayok, Babb, Wigs, Lard, and Young. That is a lot of experience and talent. Backing them we will have Jacobsen, and Tally. Again, a both players have logged a lot of minutes at the D1 level. Babb won't have to play 39 minutes a game like he did earlier in the year. Wigs can play the one, Tally is versatile enough to play the 2/3 and fill in for Shayok or Wigs at the wing or two. THT won't have any experience, but goodness he is talented and should be able to also back up the 2,3,4. Next year we can pretty much match up with anyone, we will have players that can play several positions, we can go small or relatively big. As long as everyone learns their roles and the coach can get them playing as a team, I think we can finish in the top two in the conference and a top 4 seed in the NCAA tournament. That means our NCAA tournament road is Des Moines, Kansas City, and Minneapolis. Dream season?

It was a major rebuild year after losing a stellar graduating class and having some gaps in the lineup due to recruiting misses (insert your chosen coaching scapegoats here) and yet we were competitive in most games ... and even beat several ranked opponents and bagged a tournament early on. Next year we will have experienced talent, depth, and even more talent infusions. We will win about 20 +/- and finish in the top 5 in the conference. We will be fun to watch and get back to the tournament. The year after next we will be in the top 3 in the conference with a chance to do much more. Regarding this year ... I continue to truly enjoy watching this team and love the heart and effort they gave against TOP NOTCH competition night after night. These guys are a great group of warriors.

I insert Hoiberg as the scapegoat coach.

I know Prohm doesn't usually like to play more than 8 but I think he should next year because they will have the guys to do it. And it will probably help Babb's knee if he doesn't have to play huge minutes.

Tech loses a ton. Granted they have two good freshman but I don't see them being that high next year.
Tech will be good again, but they'll likely take a step backwards.

Those two freshmen are nice building blocks, then they bring in the #51 player in 2018 class, a long with a few key role players returning (Odiase, Francis). Also bring in former 4 star CJ Roberts mid-year from Mizzou.

Beard apparently can identify talent. Both Culver and Smith were fairly lowly ranked 3 stars.

I'm no talent scout, but it sure seems like Azubuike is a nba big man. He's not a versatile type like Anthony Davis or KAT, but it sure seems like there would be a spot for him somewhere. Think like a Andrew Bogut, Marc Gasol, or Tyson Chandler type. And I would think his stock is pretty high right now. 14pts 7rebs 2blks and 1st in the nation with a 78% fg percentage.

But, he's not on many mock draft boards. If you google, there's a ton of mock drafts out there, and any Joe blow could make one, but I found it interesting to see names like Kerwin Roach and Zhaire Smith pop up. One had Smith going 14th overall.

Also, looking at the KU roster next year makes me want to puke.

Absolutely loaded.

If Azubuike is back, their starting front court will be hard for anyone in the country to handle. Lawson is a stud. But they may be pretty inexperienced in the backcourt depending on what happens with Newan and Vick.

Yeah, Smith is getting a ton of love right now. It would be pretty crazy if he went from 3 star recruit to one and done.

They'll have Charlie Moore as an option at PG. (averaged 12.2p 3.5a for 21 win Cal team in 2016-2017). Looks like KJ Lawson played a 3 type of role too.

Are Newman and Vick expected to leave?

Also would expect a production jump from Marcus Garrett in 2018-2019.

That front court with Azubuike, D. Lawson, De Souza, and the #3 Center coming in. Jeesh.

Zhaire Smith reminds me of Zach LaVine when he came out of UCLA after his freshman year. Didn't put up huge numbers, but his athleticism was off the charts. It's worked out well for LaVine.

I'm still waiting for it to shake out. There was talk of Vick leaving, similar scenario as Branden Greene, and IF Doke does leave, that's a big hole.
Dedric > KJ Lawson
Dedric will probably by all big 12, not sure KJ is there yet.
And I'm not completely sold on Charlie Moore, at least not his first season. Seems very similar to Newman, and may under perform at first.
Dotson, the incoming freshmen, may be the stud.

I believe Newman said before the season that he was only going to play one year or something to that effect and recently an assistant coach said that they could lose both Vick and Newman. They have to have at least two more people leaving to sign the commit they just got and to sign Langford who they are still recruiting.

I also see that right now Texas is 2 commits over for next year. I wonder who will be transferring?

Looks like they have 12 scholarship players now. They will lose 2 (likely) to the NBA draft.

Bring in 4. Not sure who would leave to get back down to 13.

You would think that one of these years the chemistry on a Kansas team with so much talent would just overheat and meltdown on itself, right?

Not every year, but maybe once a decade, at least?
