Expectations for 2009

PR is has a chance to make an immediate splash being a defensive guy. That's obviously where we need the most help. Of course the last guy, Ol' what's-his-name, was a defensive guy too. As long as PR is ready to step in a make defense a priority, 4-5 wins should be a given.

Oh boy... here we go.

Honestly tho, ID LOVE to see him get 5+ because that would surpass Chizik.

But in reality, we could win 1 2 or 3... we are going to have to be patient. Again.

I'm not going to "have a feeling" until the first week of classes, when we know who will be back (for Spring, at least)--and recruiting is at least stabilized. Too many spots that still need to be stabilized on defense.

If we don't lose anybody, player or recruits, then I'd say we can go bowling next year. I'll be happy with improvement of any kind. I really like the players approach so far.

the cyclonefan in me: 13-0 National champions
the optimistic: 5-6 wins, finish about 8th in the Big 12
the realist: 4-5 wins, solid recruiting class, and 2 years bowl game baby!

Im thinking a 7 win season for us.......and a bowl victory . We have a solid shot of beating CO, KU, and Baylor in conference play this year, but then again im the optimist type.

. . . What are you expectations for this football team in 2009? . . .

Seems to me the 2009 season hinges on the abilities and play of the defensive line.

Pass rush -- We gonna have one? Parker and Lyle return. During the season, GC said that Cleon Laing and Roosevelt Maggitt both were fast, rush defensive ends. We got something here to work with?

Interior DL -- Do our returnees have the natural abilities required, and can they improve to the point they can become a decent rush defense unit?

Got lots of experience at LB and DB, and all over the offense. And key specialists return, punter, kickers, deep snappers.

I'm one Cyclone fan who believes coaching-wise we're in a better position today than we were two weeks ago. I love the new guy. I was always on edge, just a bit uncomfortable, with GC. I emotionally understand PR. Couldn't be happier about his arrival in Ames.

Ooooo-Hah!

A season above .500. Barring an exodus of talent, I think everything is in place for a winning season next year. Weak pre-conference schedule, and an easier conference schedule.

I think thinks are teed up well for Rhoads to succeed next year. And I would encourage everyone to have high-expectations for our new coach. I really like this hire. I have an immense amount of respect for Pollard after this week. This new coaching hire also has my unquestioning support. However it is time that we as a fanbase begin to expect wins out of highly-paid professionals.

If you are expecting more than 2 wins next year, you will be very disappointed. As I have already stated, prepare for years of disappointment, and the perpetual return of Iowa State Football to 90's form.

The Cyclone D can't get any worse nor can the game-day coaching. That alone will give us three more W's in the win column.

I say next year ISU is a 5 win team with a 15% chance of being a 6 win team if coach PR can infuse our young clones with his passion for the game.

:confused::no:

After looking at the schedule and seeing the number of close games that the team had this past year, I would say that with a year under their belt the returners should be able to turn those close wins into firm wins this year. Experience is the key. The thing that I really liked about what I saw this year @ ISU was the young guys getting their feet wet. Granted it cost a few games but at least they should know how to swim now...

The early part of the schedule is in the favor of the team and their new leader. It will be an exciting year in Ames this year, I'll put "Money" on it:biglaugh:

This is what scares me. Here is an opportune time to get some easy victories, but then I think about Chizzelz first season and how we screwed the pooch since he was putting his new "system" in place.

PR needs to find a way to get over that hump quickly, get our clones playing like a team and romp these patsy n00bs.

Hey, TheCity, how about an update on Coach Rhoads?

Did you and/or Money watch his press conference yesterday? If so, your reactions to it would be terrific to read.

Has Money spoken with Coach Rhoads, or are we in a dead period and that'll just have to wait awhile?

Given minimal roster turnover, I think we could surprise next year and have a similar season to say CSU this year. If the guys come together, improve over the off season and the new staff keeps things relatively simple, I think 6-7 wins is doable. I's like to see the guys turn a negative into a positive and play with a chip on thier shoulder.
