Eustachy back at Hilton Sunday

And don't forget former guard Stevie Johnson guarding some of the huge power forwards in the Big 12 at the time as well as Horton bullying the other team's small forward even though he was probably the shortest starting 3 in the league. Their offense was fun but their defense was as tough as a two dollar steak.

Everybody thought they could overpower that ISU squad with their superior size until they played them and realized they were getting overpowered.
Great post. Before the UCLA game I looked at their roster and came to the conclusion that we were going to kick their ass. My favorite matchup was Jason Kapono and his wimpy light blue headband against Cantrail Horton. That had sure fire smackdown written all over it. And it was.

If you'll remember everyone was predicting that the UCLA "flying circus" was going to alley oop and dunk all over Iowa State since they had such superior size at pretty much every position. I wish I would have got/kept a copy of that story/headline. I don't remember which paper it was but they had a headline the next day something like: "Iowa State Exposes UCLA Flying Circus as a Bunch of Clowns."

Greatest headline ever!

Speaking of basketball beatings I like to think about that ND team Ejim roasted. Or when Royce spanked UConn. Both those games we were being hung out to dry by the media.

Didn't Larry have kids in Ames for a long time? He may have returned more than we know.

Disagree.

Those pictures were leaking out before the register got ahold of them. The AD knew about them.

Most places, they would have gotten ahead of the story, gotten LE to take some kind of leave of absence for rehab.

Once the story hit the register first though, it was over.
This was my stance at the time and still is today. Social media was not a thing yet and Bruce knew about the photos well before the DMR published them. I think Randy maybe has even talked about this at one point how the DMR gave Bruce plenty of notice to get in front of it and he chose to do nothing at all and the result was a huge embarrassment for ISU when the story was published. In today's world those photos probably would have been on social media as soon as it happened and been an even bigger mess. Just one of many botched situations under Bruce.

ISU could have taken the approach of breaking the story themselves and that they were going to provide Larry with the help and support system he needed to treat his addiction then re-evaluate after he met certain goals set out. It would not necessarily lead to re-instating him as coach but they could have at least limited the PR blow we took letting the scandal play out to public opinion in the worst way possible and left a path of possibility retaining him in the process. At the time he was still pretty popular even after a season where we were down a but he had the Stinson and Blalock class coming in that would have been interesting to see if he could of coached them better than Morgan did.

There are people still today that are very pro or anti Larry after what happened kind of like how some think of Bobby Knight. To me he's still my favorite coach after Orr as his teams were just so tough and played a disciplined style of ball and that reflected on how he coached and prepared them. No one saw that Elite 8 run coming prior to that season.

Larry, Bob Huggins (twice cincy & WV) and Steve sark were all fired or resigned because of alcohol related incidents.

2002 Iowa State Nebaska football gives it a run for its money. One of teh d bag writers in Husker land said something along the lines of "a big game against Iowa State is like having to test your manhood against Pee Wee Herman."

Iowa State 36
kNebrasaka 14

Headline with this picture "Pee Wee's Big Adventure"

I think it was the straw that broke the camel's back. The team wasn't that good his last two years. they knew he had a drinking problem, by several player accounts, he was becoming difficult to play for....etc. Then you add the embarrassment of not only him partying with college kids, but partying with Missouri students the night after we lost to them. Imagine Bill Self losing in Ames, then is seen that night partying in one of the Iowa State frat houses.

Anyone know what is Larry’s other son Hayden is up to these days? He was in my class in middle school and was kind of a douche .

Wasn't there an assistant who got busted for a porn charge in there? Just not a lot of control over staff and players at the end.

Yep, Randy Brown. He had a critically ill kid that caused some of his problems.

Honestly it’s probably good for all involved that Larry got fired when he did. It was likely headed for an even uglier ending.

UCLA had lobbed all over Maryland in the 2nd round so the narrative was they would do the same vs. ISU.

ISU not only was just better at defending, they had practically a week to prep for it. UCLA did get a couple in there but beyond that they didn't have much which looking back...was that their game plan? To just stick to the lob?

Fizer also grabbed a couple of lobs out of the air which felt like he was mocking them.

My favorite photo from my college years is my roommates and I with Larry at Hilton when the Cyclones had all four Big 12 basketball trophies simultaneously for mens and womens.

I can't even remember how we heard about it but you could come see the trophies set up and walk around Hilton and the coaches were all just hanging out.

I would’ve only been ~9 at the time, but I remember our family going up for that. Got to walk around the concourse and get autographs from both the men’s and women’s teams. Super cool.

Fizer was so much more dominant than anybody they had and Tinsley was at least as good as Watson they were fawning over.

Am I imagining that it was a nice day and the trophies were actually outside Hilton then you could go inside too?

I think I remember it was a nice day? Can‘t remember if it was before or after the NCAAs, but it was a nice spring day
