Yeah that Mickey Mouse soft pretzel is probably 10 bucks alone at Disney. Add in 20-30 for the booze, plus assuming you could get however much food you want and it’s not a bad deal at all. Plus with those services there are usually no lines and better places to eat.

Absolute worst case scenario is you were out 50-100 bucks which is nothing to complain about when you’re traveling for a sporting event.

It would be different if they had disclosed the actual products they were providing. I suppose they have plausible deniability because all they said was "hot food," but none of us would have expected hot dogs, cold deli meat, or a hot pretzel upon request. This seems like misrepresentation.

Would you have paid the same price knowing more precisely what you were getting?

Can I ask what you would have expected? Remember you are at a sporting event and buying a ticket anyone in the public can buy, this isn’t a luxury box or a VIP area. It’s $90 bucks for court side access with unlimited food and two cocktails at Disney. This is exactly what you should expect

I’ve been to a Kansas City chiefs vip a couple of times, I think it’s the kingdom club based on their website. But anyway, the food they had were bbq pork and brisket sliders, specialty salads, gourmet mac and cheese, wings, and some other gourmet stuff. Definitely something where some thought was put into it. So I guess that would be my experience and what I would expect if I purchased a VIP package.

You're not going to get treated like royalty for a $90 ticket, I'd say some burgers, hot dogs, and drinks is pretty fair.

I am asking a bunch of people for their opinions on this because I don't want to seem like a Karen but whatever, let's see what CF thinks.

TL;DR - ESPN Invitational was the worst fan experience of all the tournaments I've been to since going to multiple since graduation and wondering if I should complain. I hope the team experience was way better.

----

I purchased tickets to the ESPN Invitational earlier this month because I found out I would be in the US and I try to go to most of our holiday tournaments. It's a cool way to meet fans both Cyclones and others in usually a fun setting with a good early season look against cool competition. Leading up to the event I signed up for every presales and newsletter and received minimal info on basically everything.

We had an incredible showing of fan support with probably 2/3 of ALL fans there being Iowa State this weekend. It was amazing. I would probably rank it in terms of people ISU, A&M, PSU, VT, BSU, VCU, Butler, and FAU with some fans coming up the last day for FAU as they were in the championship.

I also bought courtside hospitality tickets all 3 days because I usually try to do that for all the holiday tournaments as sort of a "treat yourself"/holiday present for myself. Every tournament is different but they usually include some mix food, alcohol, special access to certain areas, and good seats.

ESPN offered the following which required a separate purchase for the area on top of your hospitality fee. Key points highlighted by me

ISU was the evening session all 3 nights so I paid $90 x 3 for the experience + fees so roughly an extra $300. Tickets for upper deck were $35 a session (though the last night I got tickets for $6 on TickPick)

Courtside hospitality was really just taking over one of the baselines as you can see in the black area in the first pick but did provide some cool angles.

Night 1
I arrive 45min before tip and they haven't let anyone in yet. Wait in line for a very long time with thousands of other fans and half of us miss tip off.
Food was Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Chips, and Lemonade/Tea/Water and my 2 drink tickets which I used for a mixed drink each. Afternoon session had the exact same from what a Penn State fan told me.

Night 2
I arrive an hour before tip and there was ample time to enter the arena before tip off.
Food was Hot Dogs, Chicken Nuggets, and Lemonade/Tea/Water and my 2 drink tickets which I used for a mixed drink each. Afternoon session session was only hot dogs from what a A&M fan told me.

(no pic sorry)

Night 3
I arrive around halftime of the previous game so not a huge issue getting in and got to see tip off easily.
Food was cold turkey sliders on parker rolls with cheese and tomatoes. I made a comment about hot food and someone came around and asked who wanted hot pretzels. Also my 2 drink tickets. Afternoon session was a Nacho and Salsa bar with beef and chicken from what a VCU fan told me.

Multiple times throughout the weekend there was players, team personel, and even employees on the "lounge furniture" so the only seating area was occupied.

Alcohol was Titos, New Amsterdam Gin, and Jack Daniels, or beer wise was 16oz domestics with I think a Jai Alai IPA as the fancy one. Wine, no clue.

Outside of the hospitality section, the tournament was very poorly ran. Little information compared to most tournaments with the NIT Tip-Off being of similar vibes... just like show up and figure it out. The website is absolutely awful and it's actually a separate custom TicketMaster account just for ESPN Wide World of Sports which is madness. The entire place was basically shut down without any of the restaurants or activities availble except for the tourney itself. Not even a Uber Pickup area sign until you found it yourself.

Anyway. Long story short. Do you complain? Would you complain or ask for a full or partial refund on anything.

Couldn't you just buy a couple of beers and hot dogs or burgers from the concession stand and spend less? Arena looked pretty empty, yet small. Looked like good seats all around. Sounds like you wasted some money. Sorry about that. I doubt they will give you a refund if you watched all three games and consumed their food/drinks.

Sushi off a stripper

That Mickey pretzel with the drippy cheese for some reason made me laugh.

I can see both sides here. I don’t think I personally would complain at this point, but I also don’t think this sounds like it’s up to Disney standards so I can see why a person would be disappointed (and would consider calling). Disney usually has better attention to detail (see some of their offerings at Epcot), and I don’t consider hot dogs adult food.

Personally if I were going to mention something, I probably would have the second night…but I would have definitely expected better. (The buffet experiences at the parks have way better food than what you got for less money.)

If you do call, I would talk to them reasonably though. I wouldn’t demand anything…

If you demand some type of a refund you’re not being reasonable (I don’t particularly like the term Karen, but it fits). It’s like the people that eat their whole meal then complain about it being wrong and expecting a discount. If you provide them constructive criticism of your experience in hopes it will improve for people in the future you’re doing a good thing.

I'll this from seeing the pictures and things may have changed from 2016 when I went but in some ways (maybe they have a couple of different fieldhouses there at the complex) that doesn't fully look like the arena ISU played at in 2016 and also back then it was just a regular arena setup and there were no luxury lounge areas whatsoever.

My wife and I were in the VIP area on Thursday night with a "let's see if we like it one night 1 before investing anymore" and thought it was a cool spot to watch the game from, but not worth the extra cost.

It didn't help that Thursday night (and most nights, from the looks of it) the area was dead with hardly anyone in it. Definitely missed out on the vibes of the stands.

I will say is that the one night we did it, getting a seat in the lounge was never an issue, even during halftime. But one of my first thoughts was how easily those few couches could be overrun if a few more people ponied up for the area.

Another benefit is that I couldn't find a full bar outside of the VIP area, so if you like mixed drinks it's your only choice and the gentleman tending bar on Thursday poured pretty generously.

As for the tourney as a whole, it was fine but nothing special. The local alumni club had a fun gathering before our first game in the baseball stadium where they opened up a concessions window and had a bar with Cyclone paraphernalia everywhere, including on their digital menus. Thought that was a nice tough. The only other restaurant on site was closed Thursday but open the rest of the weekend while the massive soccer tournaments were going on.

Also shoutout to the local alumni club for the game watch on Saturday night. What a game to watch with a bunch of fellow 'Clones.

I don't think the OP is complaining about the fact that he ate the food. I think the issue is that the type of food provided wasn't what he would expect when buying a VIP pass. I don't think the analogy of eating a full steak and then asking for a refund because it wasn't good is applicable here, because it wasn't the fact that he ate it, he just expected better quality for what he paid.
