Engagement Ring Advice Needed

Synthetic diamond=cubic zirconium?

Synthetic would be a lab created diamond that should be chemically identical to a mined diamond

after doing another search, apparently if it's labeled a 'diamond simulant' instead of synthetic, then it's something completely different (like a cubic zirconium)

so from the description of the product on the link i posted, that's probably a cubic zirconium and not an actual diamond... damn site fooled me; thanks a lot google

Cyclone1985 nailed it. No ill intentions, just something that was in my mind as one of my good friends is going through this exact same process. We both thought the "2 month salary" number was a bit ridiculous. Should have put a :jimlad: in my earlier statement.

Got ya.

Don't buy them at the Mall or anything. They typically rip you off. I bought mine from a store in Kansas City. There is no price tag, so you have to negotiate the price. I also negotiated on tax too (because I live in KS and store is in MO), I asked them to take the tax off (no tax if they are mailing my ring to me).

Places in the mall are harder to negotiate but specialty store is easier to negotiate.

I guess I sort of get why some women just want size, but the reason diamonds are expensive is because of the rarity of the diamond. Buying one created in a lab is not rare, thus anyone and their dog can own one.

Would a lab created ring be similar to putting a BMW body on a 1972 ford pinto with 200k miles on it..? Only spent couple hundred, but it looks like a BMW!

Iowa Diamond should be on your list, know your 4 C's and you'll be ok.

Color, Cut, Clarity, and Cost?

I think some have missed the OP's questions. Correct me if I'm wrong, but, "What's the most effective way to bargin on price, what is a reasonable price, etc?"

A lot of good advice on where to go, what to look for, but I think they were more interested in the negotiating of the product itself. Sounds as though they've found what they want (with a few options at other places) and now are curious on finalizing the whole thing.

Didn't mean to get off track.

Here is the quote Jared's gave me. I did not go with this diamond, but it might help.
.90 c Round Good si2 ideal cut $4700

Shoot me a PM and I can give you the details about the ring and diamond I ended up buying from Anglo.

i think a closer analogy would be comparing the new BMW with a new car made in china with entirely identical parts, just not sold from BMW

I wouldn't think many women would want a lab created diamond, but I'm surprised that if it's fairly easy for these companies to make these things cost effectively, and they are identical to mined diamonds, why these companies wouldn't be playing off of all of these 'blood diamond' type stories to get women to consider it.. i would think they should be making bank by now, so obviously one of those components in the equation is missing

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I too am thinking of popping the question. Don't feel like reading through all of the posts, but is it worth it to look at places such as Iowa Diamond, or are the internet stores going to be a better deal for the most part? Thanks in advance.

Good bump, I'm also thinking about it....just not in the near future lol.

Go ahead and look at both places. Some stores offer lifetime warranties and free cleaning while online you may not get that. I would suggest looking at several places and compare prices rather than impulse buying something.

I went to a bunch of mall places, then to Joseph's (I think), and ended up at Anglo. I thought the prices were good, and they did a much better job of explaining (and showing) the difference between diamonds. That may have been due to my comfort level with the process though.

I'd definitely not be comfortable buying one on the internet.

Or make friends with someone that works for a jewelry place (like Straca jewelry in Des Moines, where they are licensed to do pretty much all the work in Des Moines) and get one custom made for a little bit more than "at cost".

I got a ring that was $2500 bucks for a helluva lot cheaper than that.

This. Anglo did not pressure into buying certain size or dollar amount. Same cannot be said for mall stores. They just want to make a quick sale and could care less about long term customers.

I can't say much outside of my Anglo experience, but I would recommend a non-chain jeweler--so every mall store would out.

I might go check out Anglo sometime. Is is true that you can negotiate on the price? Thanks a lot everyone!

To the bold: YES! Never pay "sticker" for jewelry. Remember a diamond is just a rock when you are pricing...no point to get emotional about it. Plenty of rocks out there.

I also bought from Anglo (may be earlier in the thread) and was impressed with the place.
