Early Thoughts On Next Season?

Unpopular opinion incoming. Turn back now if you don't like unpopular opinions. Or dislike it... IDGAF.

THT isn't a good team player, and doesn't fit well within the typical unselfishness of Iowa State basketball. If he isn't going to play as a piece of the offense instead of trying to be the offense everytime the ball touches his hands, I hope he gets drafted this year.

Someone had to say it. I get that shooters need to shoot but when you are 6/24 from the field and 0/9 from 3 over the past 3 games, maybe having a bit of self awareness to not continue to jack up step back 3s would be good.

Talen reposted a friends message to him on Instagram that said "enjoyed watching you play at the college level"... pure speculation but it caught my eye that he reposted that

Which game?

I could go out and kick off a few fadeaways and dribble into a clump if that's enjoyable.

As long as 2/3 of LW, THT and Lard are back, I think we'll see the Prohm special, a 4th to 6th place finish in the big 12 and a first weekend loss in the NCAA's. If more than 1 of those 3 is gone, he'll need to hit the grad transfer market huge or his seat will be white hot. Missing the tourney 2/3 years wouldn't be acceptable. Especially when we saw Texas Tech and Baylor turn their roster almost totally over and still not miss a beat this season.

I’d think he could flourish and be a better passer without Shayok, Babb, and Wigginton having the ball so much. And playing more up top rather than from the corner. I’d think being a playmaker out of the corner would be kind of hard.

I actually think isolating THT on the wing makes more sense than the top of the key where help defense comes into play. He's a solid passer and I think Jacobson, Lard, etc could get a lot of easy baskets when their defender tries to help.

I thought he excelled in the game where he got the ball in the high-post. I would also think inverting him with a post would allow Horton-Tucker to use his uncanny ability around the basket.

In regards to all the haters on THT...the kid is barely 18. Come on now! Even Fizer had his struggles as a freshman. His upside is enormous. He needs to improve his body and drop some of that bad weight. He clearly needs to work on his shot selection which will come with more experience. Once he realizes he is a better slasher/facilitator than 3 point shooter he will play himself into a lottery pick.

I'm not so sure Lard is back next year. Hope I am wrong...50/50 on Wigginton hope he comes back for one more year.

Haliburton
Wigginton
THT
Jacobsen
Conditt

Nixon, Young, one of the freshman off bench.

Smae as this year. Just make the tournament and see what happens. Hope that people don’t lose their minds when we’re in first place in the league in january.

I swear some of you would rather have 5 more losses if it meant playing 2 bigs.

I think there's more of a possibility of it next year. But who would you proposing sitting for extended minutes if you had done it this year?
A quality coach makes adjustments based on the situation he’s delt. Playing 2 bigs doesn’t mean you have to every and all game.

Haliburton/Jackson
THT/Lewis/Leech
Wigg/Prentess (if wigg stays)
Jacobson/Solo/Zion
Lard/Conditt

That seems like a solid Big12 line-up.

I know Prohm loves the 4 guard line-up, but I'm honestly curious if it was supposed to be Solo and Lard down low prior to suspensions and injury. Once that changed and we were forced to a 4 guard line-up early he just ran with it with how well the Freshmen played early.

We need to build around Conditt. He has the highest upside. To me, Jacobson, Lard and Solo are all similar players with slight differences so I see your point of only needing 1 or 2.

Anderson is still in HS and brings a little different skill set so I don’t see him affecting the others you mentioned.
Solo Lard and Jacobson are nothing alike.

THT and Halibuton had really good freshman years. Both were inconsistent, but both had a significant impact on our success this year. Never did we have to question effort with either guy. I hope both are back next year. I could see both taking a large jump as sophomores.

Wouldn’t describe Haliburton as inconsistent. Gun shy sure but pretty damn consistent especially on defense. Agree he takes a big step forward next year.

What does everyone think about next season and how this squad will look?
I think it is really simple; if the staff prioritizes rebounding and makes rebounding the #1 priority and the #1 CORE FOCUS of the culture of the program - then next year's team will take the next step (i.e. truly challenge for a conference title and be a legit threat to get past the first weekend of the dance). If rebounding is NOT made the #1 priority, if the program's stance on rebounding stays where it is, then next year will be just like this one - we'll win enough games to keep the fans that love mediocrity happy, but we won't be serious player in the conference or the NCAA tournament.

No then they would claim to be all for small ball. Especially when we get destroyed even worse on pick and rolls than we did this year.

Halliburton, Wigginton, THT, Jacobsen, Lard

Young
Conditt
Griffin
Anderson
Lewis
Leech

Doesn't sound so bad to me. Of course I don't expect everyone back .

Agreed, as long as we get the Big 12 tourney version of that crew instead of the last 7 games of regular season and NCAA version.

So much uncertainty this offseason: LW and THT testing NBA waters, Young's health, Lard in general....

The biggest thing is they will need to establish an identity. This is something I think they struggled at this year. I have no issue going with a 4 guard lineup, but when you do this then you need to push tempo. As CW pointed out on a recent podcast, their pace-of-play was not that great.
