Down goes Freddy

I get all that with his heart but he's still coaching to this day so it's not like he was running out of time. Maybe he didn't know that at the time though I don't know. Also the NBA is much more fast paced and focused on three's and spacing now that I think this would have been better for Fred if he could coach a team built for that than a team built to win in the style of Thibideau.

No one else would have hired him. Remember we found out he had interviewed with at least 2 other franchises.

I also believe if he would have thought he would have gotten the TWolves job, he’d have waited. But I think flip’s passing changed that

Yeah, I guess it's easy in hindsight to say he should have waited for a better opportunity. Maybe that was the highest his demand would have gotten.

I’ll never understand the obsession with Hoiberg on this forum.

It's understandable the same way people have obsessions with soap operas. Because that's what it has been ever since he left. He is Mt Rushmore of Iowa State Athletics who left us at the altar, essentially. The more success TJ has the less the obsession will be, but it will always be there to an extent as long as he's in a basketball role.

Same. Guy had a great run here, but instead of leaving for a bad Bulls job you would have thought he sacrificed every Cyclone fan's firstborn son to Kali or something the way his failure is relished by those fans.

IMO, peak stupidity was reached on CycloneFanatic.com (that in itself is a high bar to clear) with the reaction of those fans you mentioned..."How DARE he coach another team besides Iowa State?!!!!??!!! He should NEVER coach again if it's not at Iowa State! He's a sellout!!! He hates Ames! He hates us! HE HATES IOWA STATE!!!! WAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!"

The way people completely lost their mind over him going to coach an old conference rival that hadn't been a conference rival in close to ten years when he took the job was embarrassing to me as a Cyclone fan, and was a real bad look for us.

That all being written, I take no pride in his downfall, but neither do I feel bad for him. I can count on one hand the number of times I've thought about Nebraska basketball outside of when I see them written about on this website since he was named head coach there.

I was sure Fred would build a Coach K like career at ISU. Obviously, if he’d seen the disaster these seven years would be, he would have stayed. He is much wealthier than he would have been had he stayed, but he can’t be happy. He was a celebrity in the coaching world. Now, he’s a failure. I wonder how much of Fred’s success was built on TJ’s recruiting. Matt A was a disaster, striking out on 5* whale after whale.

Fred needs to stay at NU and fight to turn it around, but he’s so easy to recruit against now. He needs to assemble a new staff that can get it done and to do that he’ll almost need to cut his own salary. We’ll see what his reputation is worth to him.

He was definitely on track to build a legacy at ISU that no one would ever be able to match had he stayed and coached at team to a Final 4 or better. Looking back he played with fire with some transfers that came out on the positive and eventually some of those probably would come back to bite him. I have no doubt that his assistants brought in some diamonds in the rough that he benefited from. At the time he left it was just bad timing on his part because he had a team built to win. Prohm got screwed after his first year because there was no HS signings for him to take on so when our best players graduated we had nothing in tank to carry over. Prohm did bring in some good recruits after that but was a victim of his own recruiting as they left for the NBA after 1 or 2 years.

ISU is a tough job. I was skeptical when we hired TJ as I thought we could cast a wider net in the coaching ranks and hire a proven coach with a P5 resume. I am all in after seeing how TJ has taken this group of players and turned them into a team any Cyclone fan would be proud of.

Judging by the cryptic thread title this must be Qanon trying to tell Cyclonenation something. I’ll take a shot at deciphering.

The OP used three D’s in Fredddy. Fredddy is Fred Hoiberg. Hoiberg was known for threes and played at Iowa State. So was Naz Long. Naz’s nickname was Threesus. At this point Nebrasketball can only be saved by a basketball Jesus. Q must be telling us when Hoiberg steps down Naz Long will be replacing him as the next head coach at Nebraska. This is good news, Patriots.

He could still go to an Evansville or Indiana State type program.

I wonder if someone like Bill Self wouldn't pick him up as an assistant for a few seasons to rehabilitate him. If Fred wants to stay in coaching he'd be smart to take a step back for awhile.
