I was sure Fred would build a Coach K like career at ISU. Obviously, if he’d seen the disaster these seven years would be, he would have stayed. He is much wealthier than he would have been had he stayed, but he can’t be happy. He was a celebrity in the coaching world. Now, he’s a failure. I wonder how much of Fred’s success was built on TJ’s recruiting. Matt A was a disaster, striking out on 5* whale after whale.I realize Nebraska doesn't have great BB history but you only need a few good players to turn things around quick. He did that at ISU and TJ has done it in year 1. Wondering if the "I f'ing hate recruiting" comment he once made is coming back to bite him. If he gets fired from this job I don't think he coaches again in college unless he's willing to take a much smaller school job or an assistant at a P5. Would think his next move is going back to the NBA front office or on someone's staff as an assistant if he wants to keep relevant in the sport.
Call me a bit crazy but I would not mind bringing him back into the fold as part of the athletic department and grooming him to be the next AD when Pollard retires. Pollard is 56, not exactly old by any means but he's been AD here for 17 years and count his years as an associate AD he's been doing it for 33 years now. In another 4 or 5 years he's at the age where some start to think about retirement (I know I sure hope I can be in a position at 60 to consider it) and he's more than cemented his legacy at ISU with all he's accomplished plus he's already had a heart attack and cancer so it's something to think about that within 5-10 years he could retire. Fred would have instant name recognition with the fan base and donors and already has front office experience in the NBA so spending some time getting to "learn the ins and outs" as an associate AD it could be a good situation for him to come back home for good.
I remember when he took the Bulls job someone I know that knows his wife told me Carol was hoping he would wait until all the kids were out of school before he took a NBA job as they loved the school district and what he had going at ISU at the time. But since it was his dream job she supported his decision. Looking back you have to wonder if Fred could see how it all turned out if he would have still taken that Bulls job. He had a team returning that had the talent to compete for a Final 4 and just look at how many lives were changed over that 1 decision. Prohm got a shot at a great job and it set in motion the path TJ took to come back as a better coach than he would have been hiring him over Prohm at the time. I love the way TJ's team plays this year and can't wait to see what he can do once he gets some of his recruits in here that will buy into his system and are better on the offense than this team is.
I get why Fred went to the NBA but I will never understand why he chose the Bulls when he did. They were reaching the end of their Joakim Noah and Derrick Rose run and if he didn't have as much success as Tom Thibideau then he wasn't going to be given too much of a chance. Of course the money was good and maybe he wasn't going to have a better opportunity but he could have went to a smaller franchise with some younger players and had a couple years to figure things out before success was expected.
I’ll never understand the obsession with Hoiberg on this forum.

Their fries are ******** within 4 minutes of getting them. Burgers and shakes are solid thoughI honestly thought Freddy's Hamburgers was going bankrupt when I read the thread title. Less sad, but also more sad, after reading the thread. Should probably go slam another burger and shake, then I'm sure I'll feel better!
Same. Guy had a great run here, but instead of leaving for a bad Bulls job you would have thought he sacrificed every Cyclone fan's firstborn son to Kali or something the way his failure is relished by those fans.
I get all that with his heart but he's still coaching to this day so it's not like he was running out of time. Maybe he didn't know that at the time though I don't know. Also the NBA is much more fast paced and focused on three's and spacing now that I think this would have been better for Fred if he could coach a team built for that than a team built to win in the style of Thibideau. He had a cardiac episode his last year at Iowa State.
He had already interviewed for several other jobs, and was not selected. It took a personal relationship with foreman to get him the chance. He wasn’t going to let that one go by, and wait for a chance that mIght not have happened.
After his stint in Chicago, he most certainly won’t get another chance. When your star player calls you out, every other franchise recognizes it, and will not hire you.
That’s not even taking into consideration reviews of his coaching, which was brutal

Not necessarily true. I think Fred would have had continued success here. No one can succeed at Nebraska basketball. We dodged a bullet when he left. At this point his success here is the anomaly. He would have failed here ultimately and that would have been a disaster to deal with. He did everyone a favor.
