Dog ideas

I've wanted a shiba inu for a long time, but they seem a little high maintenance.

My friend has a basset, and he is loving and fun but needy (for attention).

I remember once when my firstborn was a toddler and we were at a home with a bassett hound. We found him out in the yard with the dog, tugging on his tongue, and the dog just let him do it! That is family-friendly.

My parents got a 6 year old bassett from some empty-nesters that had to get rid of her b/c their son in law didn't want their baby around a dog. So she came to live with my parents who at the time had 6 year old twins, a 13 year old, a 16 year old and a 19 year old home for the summer from college. So that dog went from a calm house to a house filled with little kids and all of the comotion that they bring. She adapted like a champ and was the best dog.

Now my parents are the empty nesters with another bassett (the first one died at age 14 or 15 in what was probably one of the few times I've seen my mom break down) who doesn't love kids quite as much, but she is good with them--she'll let them do whatever they want to her, but she doesn't love them quite as much as the first one. She just prefers sitting in her chair watching TV (she'll watch crime shows, but if sports are on, she'll go to another room and put herself in her kennel).

I've got an American Eskimo...best dog I've ever had. If you're thinking pug you should also take a look at the French bulldog.

Blasphemy.

I would take a Boston over a French Bulldog.

But I would take 1000 Pugs before either.

Shiba Inu's are beautiful dogs. Their biggest problem is exactly what you said. They are their own bosses.

Hey everyone.. I'm going to be purchasing a dog I the next couple of months most likely and was looking for advice. Im thinking about a pug but still open for ideas. I was hoping you guys could give me some ideas as long as pictures of some different breeds of dogs. I do know I want a smaller dog. (something below the knees) and dog must be family friendly.

Thanks!
we love our english bulldog

Before buying one, make sure to check out the rescue shelter. That might already be in your plans.
Enjoy your new dog, they are 100% man's best friend.

My Yellow Lab is below the knee! You can't find a better family dog - smart, loyal, lovable and likes to play - than a lab. I have my second one now and she's amazing. Every kid that comes over just loves her to death!

This would be my first suggestion as well. Even though you may not think you want a shelter dog, you might feel differently once you get there. It's amazing the sweet dogs you'll find there just because people didn't have the time for them. Unless you know a very reputable breeder, please consider the shelter.

Check out the "how to train your Ukrainian bride" in that Ukranian bride thread. Eerily similar for how to train your dog.

Golden retriever hands down one of the best family dogs. They are a little bigger than what you want, but you will never regret getting one, they are smart, loyal, and friendly.
