Funny. I didn't know this thread existed. We are having our basement cleaned today by Stanley Steemer. Way more reasonable price-wise than I anticipated.

Ask around and see if you find a good one another family is using. They are usually glad to take on more work and if another family is using her then she's likely to be decent or they will tell you what to expect. I pay mine cash to help her out and I know the whole payment is going to her. #stickittotheman4eva
I'd do it in a second if I could find somebody for $50-$75. Most of the places in Ankeny I can find are like $140 or $150 every two weeks, which again is just too much for me.
We've considered this but not sure how it would work for us. A big part of our mess is just random crap laying all over (floors, tables, counters, etc). A cleaner wouldn't know where any of that goes, what is important vs what is trash - so I fear my new frustration would be finding where the cleaner moved X, Y, & Z.
And if we have to pick all that up before each clean, it would kind of defeat the purpose for me.

It was something that I had a very hard time with, initially. Growing up, my family was never in a position where we could have afforded a cleaning service. So, as an adult, it felt like a ridiculous luxury. But between my wife and I being fully employed and two kids with tons of activities, we don't get a ton of home time, and nobody really relishes spending the time we do get scrubbing a toilet. We pulled the trigger a few years ago, and I have to admit, it's been worth it.
I was the house cleaner. My wife thought it would be cool to get ME a house cleaner ( get your mind out of the gutter). Every two weeks - awesome - she would even rearrange furniture every other visit (interior designer by trade).
We were here first clients. Word got out how good she was. We lost her to bigger fish - Eustachy and that circle.
Was fun listening to her stories!

I've pitched this idea to my wife, numerous times. So far, she's not on board:
I have a client that does home cleaning and she has hardly any expenses. Cleaning supplies are pretty cheap.
That's a good price. I'd say for a full cleaning typically you're looking at $200 a pop.
edit: That's a Florida price point come to think of it. Probably closer to $150 in Iowa.
If you can afford this, do it while you are working and have an income. We did for 20 years. Now retired, really have to monitor expenses and a cleaning person is a luxury we can't afford. Of course, we should have saved up millions for retirement, but we didn't.
We essentially have to clean (read: pick up toys, organize coats/shoes, etc.) the house before the cleaning lady comes.
Yeah, charge $75 an hour, give $25 to the cleaner, $25 to the taxman, and put $25 in your pocket. Minimal overhead other than hiring and managing your folks.
True. I just meant he has his own as in he has a solo LLC cleaning service. So he gets all of it (besides taxman) and he charges more like $100/hr.
The night before is always a whirlwind of picking **** up and putting stuff away so she can clean. It's honestly works, you have a specific day when you have to pick up all the toys, laundy, etc. so that she can come in and actually clean stuff.
Picking up stuff is way easier than having to scrub floors, clean toilets, and all that.
$200 for once a month deep cleaning (4B/3B 2500 total sf ranch). She gets to the house around 9:30 and will leave by 3-3:30.

Yeah, just picking up the house after our four children to get the house ready for cleaning is a ton of work. It takes us several days to get the house ready when we schedule a cleaning. Totally worth it though.
This is the main thing keeping it from me doing this. Honestly with roombas etc the picking up is the majority of my cleaning any more and I wouldn't be able to do that on a schedule.
The other side is I already feel like my kids are spoiled brats compared to how I grew up so like being able to occasionally have them vacuum etc.
Honestly I might make the leap once the kids are out of the house (I know that seems backwards) but would have a better chance of keeping things picked up.
