Destin McCauley put off college for a year to chase his goal of someday winning Olympic gold.
He’s headed to Iowa State for the same reason.
The five-time Minnesota state high school champion, once considered the nation’s No. 1 overall wrestler in the 2011 class, verbally committed Wednesday night to Iowa State coach Kevin Jackson.
“I have my college goals,†McCauley said. “I want to be a multiple-time national champ in college, but that’s another side goal. My ultimate goal is to be an Olympic champion. Kevin Jackson knows his things about freestyle and he’s going to put me on the right track to reach my goals.†. . . .
What a huge get for KJ and Co! Great job! This is huge news for the program.
We've had some really good wrestlers commit to the program under KJ, but they were top 3-5 at their own weight types of kids. That's not to sell them short as I feel they will be excellent wrestlers for us. That said, McCauley is a true blue chipper (which I define as top 5-10 overall). He's the best commitment the program has had since Varner or Reader.
Hopefully this will buy KJ some more time from the haters. Cael absolutely gutted this program and KJ deserves the time necessary to get us back on track. I expect us to be top 5 in Des Moines in '13 and contending for championships after that. Let's go ahead and reel in Caldwell and really finish off this class with a bang!
Glad to have him, but it's gonna be a tough adjustment cheering for an Apple Valley kid.
I bet it won't be that hard after he sticks a Hawk.
I don't think he's the best recruit in the last 3 years. Remember, this is college not freestyle. He has to wrestle seven minutes.:skeptical:
