With our need for defensive ends, it saddens me to see that we let one that was in the program get away. My brother-in-law, Frank Weymiller, walked on to Iowa State last year as a linebacker. After a red-shirt year, he decided to transfer in order to get guaranteed playing time. With that said, it is no fault of any coach her at Iowa State that he transferred. Nobody, especially a walk-on can be guaranteed playing time, or even a chance at playing time.
Frank transferred to Coe College in Cedar Rapids (D3) and started at D-end this entire season as a redshirt freshman. Despite never playing D-end in his life, he went on to be first team all conference, and 2nd team all West region. Very unusual for a freshman and a great honor. He finished the year with 91 tackles, 22 tackles for a loss, 15 1/2 sacks (was tied for highest in all of D3), 7 pass break-ups, 8 QB hurries, 5 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery. The guy was a beast at 220 lbs. I know it is D3, but he is only a freshman, and it really leaves me wondering what could have been.
At any rate, it was a lot of fun to watch him play this year. Even if it was a different shade of cardinal and gold he was playing for, he definately made us proud. That's not even mentioning the sweet mullet he grew, which is a whole nother story!
