Defensive End - The one that got away

With our need for defensive ends, it saddens me to see that we let one that was in the program get away. My brother-in-law, Frank Weymiller, walked on to Iowa State last year as a linebacker. After a red-shirt year, he decided to transfer in order to get guaranteed playing time. With that said, it is no fault of any coach her at Iowa State that he transferred. Nobody, especially a walk-on can be guaranteed playing time, or even a chance at playing time.

Frank transferred to Coe College in Cedar Rapids (D3) and started at D-end this entire season as a redshirt freshman. Despite never playing D-end in his life, he went on to be first team all conference, and 2nd team all West region. Very unusual for a freshman and a great honor. He finished the year with 91 tackles, 22 tackles for a loss, 15 1/2 sacks (was tied for highest in all of D3), 7 pass break-ups, 8 QB hurries, 5 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery. The guy was a beast at 220 lbs. I know it is D3, but he is only a freshman, and it really leaves me wondering what could have been.

At any rate, it was a lot of fun to watch him play this year. Even if it was a different shade of cardinal and gold he was playing for, he definately made us proud. That's not even mentioning the sweet mullet he grew, which is a whole nother story!

Life is about choices. Your brother chose to go to a smaller school to get playing time rather than sticking around for a shot at being a back-up as a senior. I don't call that "letting him get away."

Anonymity on message boards tends to give people bigger balls, less commonsense, judgement, and regard for others. You sound like a real d-bag. I'm guessing you were cut from your JV team.

Kudos to the OP and your BIL. It's probably a blast to watch him play and succeed.

What a awesome season! I love DIII football; one of my nephews recently graduated after a four-year career as a 155 pound fullback at Wisconsin Eau-Claire. I hope Frank enjoys his experience and maybe he'll be the next Fred Jackson...

Yeah, 'cause walk on's never amount to anything

Signed, Jesse Smith

Holy Cow, those are out of this world stats!! Especially for not having played the position before.

Cool. If he keeps that kind up production up, he might end up playing at a higher level again.

Best wishes to him!

Becuase of my extreme bias, it's hard to say this, but ISU isn't always the best place for everybody.

Jesus, it's not like he called the guy out and said he was a piece of **** or something.

Glad he had a great season. But let's be realistic, this was against D3 competition. It does show that he probably had a chance to contribute at a D1 schools at some point in time though.

In closing: If you can't go to college, go to Coe. :jimlad:

(Sorry, couldn't resist. I grew up in Mt. Vernon, home of Cornell College. Go Rams!)

I'd guess that he was more right than wrong. Calling him a d-bag brings you down to a level much lower than he went to. My brother-in-law was an outstanding player at Wartburg. I don't think he would have helped ISU.

serious talent can come out of and/or develop at the D-III level... anyone remember Carey Bender at Coe back in the 90s? just an insane running back.

Fred Jackson of Coe College is with the Buffalo Bills now; he started a number of games this season, mainly while Marshawn Lynch was suspended...

Humor me this. You get on gocubsgo because he makes a statement that is probably true (most walk ons don't pan out like Jesse Smith did). Then you call him a d-bag and try and say that he has an inflated sense of entitlement because he's posting on a message board anonymously?

What a hypocrite. You're the one that's name calling isu200023. You're the one that's flying off the handle. You're the one acting like a d-bag.

With all due respect to the OP, your BIL sounds like he had a great year and he's a great competitor, but let's not get carried away. He made a decision to leave. Nowhere in your post did you say that a coach told him to leave.

frank weymiller, i remember him wrestling for waukon. Isn't he only like 5'11"? He didn't seem very tall. Good story, glad to see him have success- and yes- he is one that got away. Probably one of those guys who was overlooked because he isn't very tall. shame

I had heard Frank was ripping it up, but didn't see the final stats. That's great for him. Being a Waukon grad myself, I hated to see him leave Ames. I think he had the strength and athleticism to turn into a Shawn Moorhead type player, but he decided to cast his lot at Coe. Frank is a great kid. I had a couple of nephews that graduated with him and I know his extended family well. He comes from a Cyclone family. I wish him all the best.

I was just sharing some information on a former cyclone. I don't know that he would have ever played here at all, I wasn't trying to say he would be all big 12. It was more just me sharing my curiosity on all the unknowns. It was really fun having a family member on the team for a year, I'm sure everyone can agree on that. I might have been misleading in my post, but my curiosity is if he would have seen the field, not if he would have been an all-american D-end at Iowa State. It would have been so thrilling to see him on the field. That being said, its probably just as thrilling watching him sack an Iowa conference quarterback and force a fumble as it would have been to play special teams at ISU as a senior. Just take it for what it is, which is a story of former walk-on and what he's doing now. Don't poke fun, make sarcastic comments or get in ******* matches.

no doubt what did the guy say to be called a dbag? what if the d end of mention left on his own to get playing time at coe? seriously i wonder if some people think for a second before they type stupid things... and really great for your nephew or who ever is playing great at coe, that is awesome... but who cares if people on here dont care... we are isu fans, and im guessing p rhoads let a future player just walk...

DG, I almost shed a tear with that story buddy. Seriously, sounds like he had a great season and it was something for you all to be proud of. Hope you never **** him off or you may get ended. Take it easy and heal some animals or something
