Defensive Coordinator Possibilities?

So what's left for the coaching staff now, just the QB coach?

If Heacock is indeed our DC, then that is the only spot left. Have heard that there is a possibility that Todd Sturdy is retained as the QB coach. Matt Campbell will make the decision of course. But some have said that Campbell could be leaning that way because that would give continuity to Joel Lanning in his development. We just need to be patient. I am sure Campbell has a plan. He always does.

Folks it is looking more and more from the media sources that CMC will be bringing his old DC along to ISU. Will be official in few days more than likely. Doesn't look like anyone would dispute this. So good we will find out in next few days. Was hoping to get a big 12 minded and familiar DC but......

This is one of the reasons you go out and hire an established head coach, IMO. They have a history, a way of doing things, a cohesive plan and everyone who comes over with him knows what their role is in getting the job done and are ready to get after it from day one. We've already seen the way this translates in recruiting, with the quick manner in which the staff has shored up team commitments and picked up several more in just a couple weeks. It has advantages on the practice field as well.

People worried about this have no reason to be. If you hire a coordinator as a first time head coach, they have a greater need to make a splash in coordinator hires because they have no relevant experience running a team as head coach. That isn't what you are getting in this case. You hire Campbell because you WANT him to bring as much of his program with him as he can.

Per sources, two more Toledo assistants will join Matt Campbell’s staff at Iowa State following Toledo’s bowl game

Iowa State: Per source, Toledo defensive coordinator Jon Heacock and defensive line coach Eli Rasheed will join Matt Campbell at Iowa State following Toledo’s bowl game.

Wasn't there a report we hired Eli Rasheed like two weeks ago, or did I dream that?

And I'd be in favor of keeping Sturdy around. Ayeni, Stury, and Eggen were the coaches who I said would be most likely to be retained. Obviously Ayeni is staying and keeping Sturdy would give good continuity in the offensive backfield.

Edit: Found an article from December 4th saying we added Rasheed: http://www.si.com/college-football/2015/12/04/eli-rasheed-iowa-state-toledo-defensive-line-coach

Now football Scoop is reporting that Heacock to ISU isn't a done deal, that he is still mulling other offers

I think in the end, we do get him and I would like the hire. Familiar with the staff, 20th in adjusted D last year under him, experience- overall solid hire. Like you said FBScoop retracted that its a done deal so I suppose we will wait and see but Campbell put it yesterday that "we are just crossing the t's and dotting the i's" so its his belief that Heacock is coming.

It sounds like Sturdy is going to stay on as QB coach but we'll know for sure soon.

That would probably be for the best (esp. if Lanning is the starter), where did you see that? And I saw a quote from Campbell that the QB coach will probably have other responsibilities which if thats not just recruiting- probably rules out Sage and Seneca

Toledo DC Jon Heacock said he will decide in few days whether to join Matt Campbell’s staff at Iowa State or remain at Toledo

I hate it when the coaches get asked stuff like this before the fans and players even leave the field. Let them enjoy themselves and the win. This couldn't wait until tomorrow?
