Defensive Coordinator Possibilities?

Cyclad was always great to interact with back in the day when I used to be on CR. Good one to have here.

The line between "hiring your buddies" and "hiring people you're comfortable with" is pretty fine.

Big difference IMO. On the one hand you are only giving them a job because they are your buddy......On the other hand, you are hiring someone who does a good job who you have had a good working relationship with.

If you can't see the difference, then you just don't get it.

It is a big difference, but a fine line. Imo this is hiring the most well vetted candiates and best fit, but is it? The question is can Campbell see the difference? I hope and think so, but we have little to go on

If you bring in a completely new DC who you have NEVER worked with, HOW do you know if it is the best fit??

Can you see the difference?

Matt Campbell just vetted DC candidates a year or so ago when he tabbed Jon Heacock to be the DC at Toledo. If he offers the DC job to Heacock then I would assume that Campbell found him to be capable and a good fit with the staff.

Rumors are out that Candle was more popular with Toledo players and that Heacock was not that well liked. Don't know a lot about that. Whoever Matt Campbell wants to get for his DC is okay with me. With the sign up at Jack Trice I would assume the new DC is Heacock.

Its not the same thing. Chizik hired buddies. Campbell is bringing along employees. He has worked with them and knows them as professionals. Huge difference.

Agree. Campbell's staff transfer is not that unusual. Ala, Jerry Kill. I think it helps the staff hit the ground running.

I would rather the head coach hire the best coaches that fit his coaching team rather than just the best coaches. The cliche about the sum of the parts being greater than the whole or something like that? The coaching staff is a team and they need to be built and operate as a team.

Thanks for the comment. I left CR as there were too many people who could not keep the conversation focused on cyclone sports without interjecting their opinions on subjects that only serve to create controversy. We have enough of that just talking cyclones.

I did a quick search and couldn't find it posted anywhere.. but has Coach Ayeni been introduced as the Associate Head Coach, as opposed to just the RB coach?

His twitter profile mentions that he's the Associate Head Coach.

(And yes, I know this thread is about DC position, but didn't wanna start a new thread to ask this question)

I think he was assoc head coach at Toledo under Campbell before coming to ISU as well.

No official announcement, but this was expected. He wasn't staying here with status quo position. Too many options.

IMO, the title of Associate Head Coach was given Lou Ayeni because of his close relationship with Matt Campbell and also that he held the same position under Campbell at Toledo. Someone would get that title. And who better than Ayeni? The additional title might mean a bit more money and also more prestige than just being a position coach.

I like what Campbell and the staff are doing so far. They are working hard and really hitting the recruiting hard. I expect that the enthusiasm for the new staff and the coming football season will be excellent.

Folks it is looking more and more from the media sources that CMC will be bringing his old DC along to ISU. Will be official in few days more than likely. Doesn't look like anyone would dispute this. So good we will find out in next few days. Was hoping to get a big 12 minded and familiar DC but......

I'm fine with Heacock or almost anyone else Campbell picks, let our HC pick his guys, if it's not working 3 yrs in, then you can lobby and complain. You have to give time for a coach to succeed with their guys
