Defensive Coordinator Possibilities?

Don't be such a simpleton by judging the hire on 1 year of raw stats. That is a horrible way to assess the ability of Heacock to succeed here.

It is? How many of the teams at the top have poor defenses? It is not secondary, it is relative. The correlation of the teams at the top of the conference having the better defenses is not any different than any other conference, just the stats are.

You didn't watch those games, did you? God damn you are a box score guy. Let's hope Campbell's staff gets ISU to play a lot better than Toledo did in those games. Toledo lucked out that Arkansas and ISU out-stumbled them. Toledo did not go on to dominate in the MAC- a pretty overrated team in terms of quality of play imo. Good record though.

It is all about wins. I think that Michigan State is the luckiest of all teams. That Michigan Miracle was something else. Iowa was pretty lucky that CJ Beathard was able to put the ball out over the goal line against us and avoid the safety. And inches away from being tackled for losses on those big runs.

I thought Box Score and Wins is all that matters. Otherwise let's bring back CPR and we can just overlook the Losses that we should have avoided.

I don't think he indicated it never happens. Just said it may be going overboard. When just about all the staff came from your former staff at a lower-level school, it's a legitimate concern. They have little connection to the area from a recruiting standpoint and no experience close to the B12 level. People on here, in hindsight, were critical to the point of being offended by Chizik bringing in all the old cronies. This is the same thing, other than they are less experienced. I can see 3-4 of his old staff, but not the entire staff.

Once again, I shall try to become the voice of reason....:eek:

We did not luck out against Arkansas...our D-line dominated the line of scrimmage while we played bend but don't break in the back...blocked 2 kicks, picked of a pass and oh yes...we won the game. Would it have been better if we gave up 125 total yards and lost?

Agree that we were not as good as ISU and should have lost....we got lucky. Really don't have anything to add...I actually thought we were better last year and should have won despite not having Hunt or Ely...this year we have them and should have lost;

Regarding Heacock...I stated in one of my first posts here that our defense over the past couple of years has been vastly improved, especially against the pass. We got some guys back and healthy, but the overall scheme become much more aggressive. You simply aren't going to shut down Bowling Green and Western Michigan's passing games...all of the great athletes in the MAC are on the offensive side of the ball....hmmm...kind of sounds like almost every other conference (except for the SEC);

Moving the whole Toledo staff does make me nervous, but lets be honest guys, we are Iowa State. Campbell isn't going to turn us into a winner over night with the same players we had in the system before. I imagine he will replace guys he doesn't think he's getting his money worth from. In the end I would probably do the same thing as Campbell. Work with who you know, trust, and are comfortable around. Just hope he sees the forest before the trees, unlike his predecessor.

Toledo had the #51 ranked defense in yards/game. That is against the #86 schedule strength. Not that impressive. Also, Heacock is not popular. Campbell is going overboard in nepotism - and he will pay the price when he goes up against the Big12. You can't move the Toledo Rockets to the Big12 and succeed. That's what we're trying to do.

That's Matt Campbell's decision. Saying it won't work is just your opinion.

Both Rhoads and Chizik got a lot of good assistants with good experience on their staffs? Did that work in the Big 12?

I trust that Coach Campbell's staff has taken the time to look at the offenses that are in the Big 12. I will admit that it does make me somewhat nervous to see us extending a scholarship to guys that only have MAC or lower offers. I don't care how great these guys are. MAC players will not win games in the BIG 12. JMO.
First....I love the MC hire, and I am OK with him bringing a lot of staff with them. I am Aldo ok, at this point in time, trying to poach some Mac bound kids.......since it is so late in the recruiting season. With the annual 25 scholarship limit, we cannot afford to have unused schollys. That said, we beat Toledo two years ago, and should have won this year. So, at best, Toledo's program is roughly equal to ours in terms of talent. Hard to argue different. If they played our schedule this year they would not be bowling. They might have 5 wins, like we should have had. So......the recruiting must notch up next year, I think it's too late to expect miracles this year.....IMO.

I'm embarrassed to say that I did not consider the lateness of the recruiting season as a reason for the numerous Mac-type offers we've seen. Such offers make sense, though. IIRC, Chizik and Rhoads each attempted to preserve the commitments already in-hand at the time of their hires and fill-in from there as best they could. CMC is likely doing the same.

Although, again, iirc, CMC might be weeding out commitments more than did either of his two predecessors.

(BTW, Cyclad, if you do not know my moniker here, I'm one of your pals who goes back with you to junior high. What was that, 80-90 years ago?)

We are recruiting guys with P5 offers. Do you seriously expect a new coach to recruit guys who ONLY have multiple P5 offers this late in the game?? Do you know anything about recruiting? Several good schools offer a few guys that no other school does. It's called diamonds in the rough. Some of our best players have been found that way. It's not likes he's recruiting literally every recruit he had there, he's going for the good ones.

Agreed.

Lane Danielson, Levi Peters, Trevor Ryen = walk-ons = recruiting is a crap shoot to a certain extent.

I think you first need to look at the kids we have got in the last 3-5 years...we were the only power 5 offer for a lot of them. Not all but a lot.

Its not the same thing. Chizik hired buddies. Campbell is bringing along employees. He has worked with them and knows them as professionals. Huge difference.

What's a lot?

I would say 3/4 of the high school kids. started going through them, but didn't make it the whole way. Most that had another power 5 offer it was maybe 1 or 2 at the most and from teams like washington st, kansas or similar schools. A lot of them had interest from power 5 teams, but there was no offer.

so like the Washington State that is playing Miami in a Bowl? Yeah who wants those scrubs we should be putting resources in to battling Alabama and Clemson for recruits.

This staff has done an unbelievable job in its first 2 weeks. The amount of recruits that this staff has got to Ames to visit who are already committed elsewhere never happened in previous 7 years. All we heard was that our Airport is too far away and players can't buy a ticket...lmao. That's called a excuse by a good recruit to not come. Sorry but if you like a coach and have Internet and can see our new facilities and think it might be a good spot you will find a way to get $500 to fly here.

The 2017 class will tell us just how good of recruiters we really have and that class will be extremely Important.

I think we met in the fall of 1964. Just finished the last beer you left in my car.....Blue Moon. I always enjoy your comments, as you have tremendous insight into football, as well most pertinent issues. I will closely watch for your posts. Regarding recruiting......time will tell. As CMC says, recruiting is about relationships. IMO....at this point they go where they have already established relationships. Poach the kids that you think were your best MAC recruits, and go after some kids that you tried to get to Toledo but went to bigger programs. Goes without saying, you try to keep the best, if not all, of the CPR commits. This class, although rumored to be small, is very important as we have so many seniors next year. Cannot let the pipeline dry up. I think 2017 recruiting will be interesting to follow. I hope you can consider joining me at the gridiron club recruiting event....I am on the planning group. We intend to have an exciting unique venue, and lots of time to meet and mingle with the staff.....as they are new. Later, gotta take the grandkids to meet Santa in Ames.
