DeAndre Kane visiting next week

And youre not?

Because i think we should start playing our young talented highly touted recruits? No
That Iowa CURRENTLY has a better roster than we do because they DID play freshman last year? No.

Thats pretty much all ive said...and now sure how thats disputable.

Um. no. Iowa got a bunch of 4 year guys and played them.....including two freshman guards last year, and are in far better shape than we are currently as far as a roster. We took the instant gratification road...which isnt wrong by any means.....but now we are seeing the issue with that. You can only patch it up for so long...at some point you need to season guys and get them time, take their lumps.

In no way am i saying Fred is wrong in his approach......but there are drawbacks to this style as well.

Sounds like you are assuming Iowa will be an NCAA team and ISU will not. What if it's the other way around or both make it?

I have no idea if iowa has a better roster. ISU has a bunch of new players that could be anywhere from poor to great.

Your right I didn't really reasearch it like I should have but that is the the first story that comes up when you search about 4 year scholarships. The Big 10 is the conference who uses them the most and yes Iowa is doing it (71) for the past two years. ISU not so much.

Colleges, universities slow to offer multiyear athletic scholarships - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Of the BCS conferences, the Big Ten had the best track record for offering multiyear scholarships, led by Illinois, Purdue, Ohio State, Iowa and Michigan State, which offers four-year deals to football players as part of coach Mark Dantonio's policy. The Big 12, which was the only BCS conference to formally support the override vote, had offered the fewest, with Kansas State, Texas, Texas Tech, Iowa State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State all having given two or fewer multiyear scholarships in two years.

Also wonder who our 2 multiyears were. Both were give in first year in 2011/12 signing periods for the 12/13 season and we didnt have any for the 13/14 signees (not sure if they are only counting the football signees though or the early basketball signees too as they only mention the February football signees). My guess is that Niang and SDW were the two multi-year schollies given for 2012/2013 but who knows could be for volleyball or any sport.

They could both make it...they both could not make it. We both play pretty tough non conf scheds if memory serves.....my main point was just that if our recruits are as highly regarded as we say....then lets play them. Thats it. IMO....i feel like Fred has gotten us to the level where we dont need to rely on all these types of guys.....and thats not taking into account the guys history.

So play a guy like SDW who has Babb, Clyburn and McGee ahead of him instead of redshirt him?

Very true...you could be right. Im just not sure what good it does Morris to have him getting a handful of minutes while Kane plays, to maybe eek into the tournament...when he could take his lumps, and be a much better player for it. And possibly a far better team.

I mean arent we realistically either way looking to the following couple years when Georges is a jun/ sen? to make something big happen.

Haha...because a guy you dont know agrees with you and that hes not sold iowa will make it? ha..ok....good job man!!! Update your facebook that someone actually agreed with you!! Its your day! Hooray!

Youre kidding yourself if you think the roster we have this year is beating iowa at home this year.....ill load up some coin on that. We MAY eek into the tourney again.....but its ignorant to say iowa isnt building something pretty long term over there that can actually contend....not just "hope to finish in the top half" of a bad conference as you aspire to Cytwins.

Like i said....its not a wrong approach, but id rather the 4 year guys....which wait...if they are highly recruited...SHOULDNT they be playing?....but id rather have those guys play, than sit....Not sure i like the message that sends a kid like Morris that we recruit him for years and years....only to give his spot to Johnny come lately that happened to visit for a day from another school.

Am I reading correctly that you're willing to bet Iowa will beat us at home this year?

Iowa played their highly regarded recruits and made it to the NIT. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the NIT. Knock yourself out though. Fred's mix & match is fine by me. "Next year" is for losers.

I am confused, are we not building a long-term team? We have brought in 4 top 150 recruits the last 2 years, 1 sophomore (who has the potential to be all-big 12) and 3 Frosh (1 RS, 2 True) who all could/should have an impact. Not too mention, our other proven player, Ejim, will be a 4 year starter.

We recruited transfers and made 2 NCAA tourney's while gaining loads of exposure and having our coach named in just about any coaching search. 4 top 150 HS recruits as well.

Iowa recruited HS'ers and made the NIT last year, proved they COULD be a solid team in 2013-2014. Same # of top 150 HS recruits. Oglesby is barely good enough for A-league intramurals.

But to each their own, I guess...

Yep, because the last 2.5 years we have beat by only top 10 teams at home. Iowa will clearly be a top 10 team and will blow us out at home.:skeptical:

If i have to pick in May? Yes...absolutely.

Cyclonin: Not what i was saying. NOW we should be to the point where we dont need Kane, because our incoming guys, thru the buildup of the program that fred has done a great job of....doesnt require it.

Thats why i asked if we really needed this guy....and if it isnt better for Morris to just take his Gessell lumps, and we get even better as a program. Thats all. Dont think thats terribly out of line to think....but......as usual....

So... What do you want to do when these players become upperclassmen? Sit them and play the younger players so they can take their lumps? Iowa played them because they didn't have any other options. They had to play them. If that ex-con would have made it in school, one of the young ones probably wouldn't have played.

Plus, it isn't like they are just sitting on the bench. They are practicing against B12 quality players. And if they are good enough, they will get minutes in games. Palo isn't starting B12 caliber but he comes in and gives us minutes. If the young ones are good enough, they will do it too. Isn't that what Georges did? If good enough, play them. If not, don't.

What I don't understand is why people think you need seniors to win games. KU lost 5 starters and are a top 5 team this year because of their recruiting class. I'd much rather have a talented freshman than an avg sophomore with experience.

mattyice: Fran will never win in Ames...I'd say it's a bold statement but considering he will be on the hot seat this year unless they win the NIT it might be his last opportunity

I remember when McDermott built the program the "right way". The problem wasn't getting star players to come to Ames, it was getting them to stay after being shoved into the spotlight too early due to a lack of complimentary players around them. To suggested that CFH could have rebuilt this program in a better way than he did is ridiculous.

First off I do fully expect us to beat Iowa at Hilton and make the NCAA's with or without Kane.

If Kane were to come here there is no reason Monte can't still be the starter and/or play major minutes if he prove worthy. It's not like many fans were expecting both MM and M Thomas to play 35+ minutes their fresman year anyway. A Kane commitment would affect Naz's and Babu's playing time for multiple reasons more. Also Kane is more of a combo guard than true point thus he could play a number of minutes at the 2.
Everyone needs to remember Fred recruited Maurice Jones to transfer to ISU from USC to have some experience in the back court. That obviously didn't work out. I think the staff's plan was always an experinced guard to help ease the freshman acclimate if possible. Kane gives the program options and that is a good thing.

Iowa recruits transfers too. In fact, they had one on the bench, waiting to play next year. Everyone recruits transfers. The difference is that none wanted to play for Iowa.

In fact, what highly touted recruits outside of the Iowa have the Hawks signed? Who have they brought in that isn't already an Iowa fan? Honest question... I really don't know.

I would much rather have NBA-ready juniors and seniors than talented freshmen or average sophomores... (Duh, who wouldn't?)

Whoa whoa......you think Fran will be on the hotseat? You do realize they love him over there....and hes done even less than Alford did. Hotseat? are you kidding?
