DeAndre Kane visiting next week

Agree. This kid has tremendous upside.
Just watched the Marshall Tulsa CUSA tourney game. Granted it is only one game but Kane looked athletic and can get to the rim pretty much at will. He was clutch at the end of the second to push it to a third OT and to ice the game at the end. Reminded me a lot of Jake Anderson with his effort. His shot leaves a little to be desired but that maybe improved under Fred's coaching. I have read the personality concerns but if the staff is satisfied that he has matured I think he could play a significant role for the Cyclones next year. Should be interesting to see if he commits.

We don't force anyone out but don't think for a second the staff isn't up front with the kids about their future role. Can't blame someone for leaving if the rotation doesn't involve them much.
Forcing out and not renewing a one year scholly are not the same thing. Technically a player can stay but just not recieve aid. But considering much of the aid they would have gotten (if not a player) is lost it is a defacto force out. They CAN give 4 year, 2 year or 3 year schollies. I only say that because a player knows what they got when they signed. Each year freds job is to put the best team on the floor with the schollies he has. I am sure he confronts it like a business that it is. The pressure on him is to win. It is on each player to earn their scholly for next year really and fred has until mid june to not renew someone. I wish it wasnt like that but as a former college athlete at a smaller school I can say it isnt just the big boys, this is very common in college sports. Maybe fred doesnt but I personally would be shocked. What sucks is technically the sit out rule even applies for transfers that had their scholarship pulled. Doesnt seem right. Which is why players should negotiate the longest term scholly they can. I am betting fred does it in a way that the players know he is still in their corner. he also has to weigh the cost on a team being all in... thats a two way street I figure ( I know thats rhoads but same principle)

Marshall seems like it has a nice, smart fanbase (huge inference from the interwebz i know.) Surprised how much they know of Hoiberg...Sometimes I forget how big of a rock star our coach is (even outside the state of Iowa.)

Well west virginia is B12 ccountry now.

I wonder how ISU gives out scholarships-
Some in Big Ten offering 4-year scholarships - ESPN

I know when I was playing football we hosted a running back from Iowa City (can't remember his name, but was pretty highly recruited) and after his visit the players hosting him told Coach Mac we didn't want him on the team so we quit recruiting him and I believe he ended up at Arizona State. He was a total DB on his visit.
Carlos Honore? Class of 98' RB all time Iowa HS rushing leader at the time. Funny if so I just had lunch with him a few months ago. He said not going to Iowa State was the biggest mistake of his life. Said mac offerred a lot but he signed with Iowa they bungled his transcript (he was a partial eligble) he took what he was told he needed to as a redshirt only to be told they goofed and would sit a year. He tried to transfer to western illinois so he could play right away but ended up hanging up the cleats after spending a few weeks on campus. Carlos was actually a good guy but had a swagger that can be off putting until you got to know him.

His brother Kahlil took a punt off his foot to help us win a game in Ames.
oh if you are talking about Hill then yes complete ******.Iowa gave mama Hill a job in academic compliance. She was the one who bungled carlos' s transcript!

Me too. It really is an important piece of information that I am curious as to why the press doesnt ask or if they have I missed it). Sounds like Iowa does some for 4 but not all so I wiuld guess the same is true for ISU. It would seem longer schollies could give you an edge on the high 3/4 star prospects that want to play college ball for multiple years Or give an edge to less strong schools that offer the guarentee to the 2/ low 3 star recuit. I would also be intrested as to what drake and uni do.

If I were to speculate it would be that George Niang, Monte Morris, SDW, Thomas etc. Probably got 4 year scholly while others just got renewable one year deals and that Iit was always part of the deal that they had to earn year 2. I am not for releasing individual terms but would like to know if ISU does offer different deals or only singles, only 4 years etc. CW needs to get on it!

DeAndre is still scheduled to visit Ames today, but per a source it's "up in the air" currently. Memphis reportedly making a strong push for him.

Actually I am guessing the entire team is on a one year scholarship that get's renewed every year. Prior to 2011 multiyear sholarships weren't even allowed by the NCAA. The Big 10 was the first conference to offer them on a limited basis per the school's discresion just last year. I haven't heard anything about a Big 12 school doing this yet. Maybe they have but, I am guessing that would have been leaked and reported on CF by now if ISU were offering 4 year schollys.

As expected, NCAA raises scholarship aid by as much as $2,000 | CollegeFootballTalk

Additionally, the NCAA approved the following legislation October 27, 2011:

  • Multi-year grants up to the full term of eligibility, though one-year grants will remain the minimum. Basically a school can determine the length of a scholarship.

One thing to consider is how a player's behavior affects a multi-year scholly. What about Sam Mack or Mike Taylor? Does a multi-year scholly become cause for a lawsuit if a player gets kicked off the team? A school may be able to win those cases, but at what cost?

It was actually Hakeem? Hill (Kalil's younger brother) not Carlos.

You have special talent, a gift. Not the school's, not the townspeople, not the team's, not Fred Hoiberg's, not mine. It's yours, to do with what you choose. Because that's what I believe, I can tell you this: I don't care if you play on the team or not. --Coach Dale

I think If I were Kane I would like my chances of starting and playing lots of minutes at Iowa State with an average at best senior, a decent juco player, an inexperienced sophomore, and 3 freshmen. And if Kane came to Iowa State one of these players more than likely wouldn't be on the roster anymore, which increases his chances of getting big minutes even more. This is who Kane would be replacing at Iowa State http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/41761/korie-lucious. The starting PG.

Compared to Memphis where you have 3 experienced seniors along with 2 freshmen. Joe Coleman will likely start for Memphis at PG. This is who Kane would be replacing at Memphis http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/51257/antonio-barton. The backup PG.

Seems like a no brainer to me.
