David Harris-UNI AD

ISU's enrollment has been on the decline too. That very much has to do with demographics and not necessarily who is leading the institution. In other words, ISU enrolls a very large percentage of Iowans and the number of traditional college age students in Iowa is decreasing. Also keep in mind the number of International students has been decreasing each year since 2016. COVID has accelerated the drop in International student enrollment.

Wait, did the OP never come back and explain what he meant by "shambles"?

I'm shocked.

I did. Check #24 and #29.

I'm guessing you guys aren't interested in a department staffing, social media, community involvement and attendance and fundraising trends but I can definitely expand on those. There's also been quite the uptick in institutional support to backfill the corporate dollars lost.

wait... maybe its the state? kids saying eff it im going somewhere else?
Funny. When I graduated, I received obscure postcards from cities and municipalities asking me to stay, yet I had to leave to find work.

  • Fewer kids in Iowa in general, which will only get worse with current trends
  • Iowa (and the US in general) becoming much less attractive for international students
  • Cuts to UNI academic programs have decimated the marketability of the school
  • ISU has become much more attractive and even U of I has with improved facilities post-flood
  • UNI’s gameday atmosphere is awful at both FB and MBB, and I say this as someone who’s attended a lot of games over the past decade
  • Their ticket prices for everything are ridiculous
All of these are factors leading to the decline of UNI athletics. It’s always been a suitcase campus and unfortunately, the folks running game ops have really struggled while their teams haven’t played exciting styles to watch. The games aren’t worth students sticking around to watch on the weekends. It’s very sad as my wife is an incredibly proud UNI alum, but there are a lot of reasons things have dried up and it really feels like the only chance for a change is a total restart with younger, hungrier leaders - AD, FB, and MBB. Lots of folks we know who used to be die-hard Panthers and now have no interest in attending games.

Hey All!

I don't think it's a secret that the UNI Athletic Department is in shambles right now and that it starts with AD David Harris who came from Iowa State in 2016.

My question for those of you more 'in the know' on the inner-workings at Iowa Stats is what his reputation was when he was in Ames? I know he was on the student services (non-public facing) side of things which, in itself, doesn't tend to lead toward being the public face of a department.

Any insight anyone has would be very helpful! Thanks!

How would this be helpful to you? Other than to throw out UNI problems and try to connect them to ISU.

I'm not trying to connect anything back to ISU. He was obviously well thought of enough to be the choice even though he wasn't the committee's recommendation for the job. He has to have a great background somewhere and I was just asking for any information on what his strengths were in Ames because he was in a non-public facing position.

No harm intended. I'll see myself out.

UNI's Accounting department used to be known for pumping out CPA's. The problem though was that they could do that because they were not accredited and could have CPA Review Courses as part of their Accounting courses. ISU on the other hand was accredited and thus could NOT have CPA Review Courses as part of their Accounting courses. So as an ISU student I had to pay for an outside course to take the CPA Review course and it was another 3 hour class on top of my ISU classes.

That's why IIRC there was a claim that they had ~70% rate of first time CPA exam passing rate. Unfortunately, it wouldn't help in the real job as excellent "exam-questions-problem solver" struggled when faced into new assignments where there were no prior year's workpapers (aka "can't just follow what people did previously")

I think TV availability has completely killed their ticket sales. Not even their own games, but TV availability of other games (especially football.). People would rather stay home and watch a random Big 10 or Big 12 game on tv than go to a UNI game in person.

Also to note, the coming enrollment cliff in the 2025-27 Midwest high school classes is very significant and very real and that is going to hurt everyone.

The one on the horizon in the late 2030s is catastrophic.
You beat me to it....folks forget that declining enrollments of hs kids in the state will continue to hurt state schools.

So....you young, child bearing aged Cyclone fans....start producing! Lol

They should hire Scott Frost again! Lol

I did see they hired Drew Tate recently!

Great points on the decline....and honestly, the TV deals Iowa and ISU have have made the gaps huge athletically.

From a school stand point, id imagine the CC growth has also hurt UNI the last 15 years.

Just wait until that lines up with China’s population pullback meaning less imports and increased disruption from online learning technology.

On-campus education is a soon a luxury good and many colleges won’t survive. ISU needs to continue to invest in college athletics as it’s a relatively cheap product differentiation

Lack of foreign students due to pandemic and Anti-Asian sentiment has hurt ISU enrollment. Plus continued erosion of State government funding has hurt total enrollment.

Anti-Asian sentiment? At Iowa State? Are you implying the student body or the admissions process is racist? Sorry I don't get where you are coming from on that.

Ya thats a bs line. There are tons of Asian kids in Ames school district.

Regarding declining international student enrollment: One factor is the difficulty in getting employment in the US in general and in Iowa specifically.
20 years ago, International Students had about a year from their graduation to look for jobs in the US through Optional Practical Training (OPT). Basically OPT gives a chance to employer to see whether they like the employee and want to go to the next step (offering H1B visa that will be good for 3 years and can be extended for further 3 years). 20 years ago, IIRC you could delay the start of the OPT until 3 months after graduation in case you want to travel do something. The last few years, OPT kick in on your graduation day without exception andyou will need to find employment within 6 months, otherwise you will need to go home. That’s what happens in general although if you are in STEM, you can apply for extension.
That’s a tall order for a lot of international students. Especially in Iowa where only limited companies can and want to hire international students. If it was difficult about 20 years ago, I can imagine it is more difficult these days. You add the cost of sending your child(ren) to the US and it makes things less attractive for parents to send their kids to the US
