Dave Barrent

Eh, Riley Reiff did. So did Ford (twice). Reiff and Ford did about this time of year. If Iowa picks up 5 recruits this year, I'll agree that it has to do with the off-field problems. And I'm sure that those issues play a small role - but I'm guessing wins/losses play a much larger role, and Iowa has had more of the Ls than the Ws.

I disagree with this, Iowa's three BCS years came with recruits coming in from poor years record wise. The recruits coming in after the BCS years have done nothing but lose and end up in jail.

I agree. If you are Miami in the late 80's/early 90's, you can go through what iowa is going through right now because everyone focuses on the wins/national titles. Losing to Western Michigan to stay home for the holiday season sours even the most true blue hawk fans (not to mention the band wagoners from the 3 BCS games).

I hate to say it, but using Reily Rieff as an example probably isn't your best choice. It's like saying if you think you'll get busted stay with your commit to Iowa, if you plan on excelling in college look elsewhere.

They can't help but have recruiting problems. KF has the look of a lame duck whether he stays or not. The damage is already done in my view. It's not always fair, but at 3 mil a year, he must understand the game. Recruits want continuity, not a coaching change. That is death in recruiting.

That begs the next question -- if KF is a lame duck, who replaces him?

Their checklist:
  1. Someone who knows the school, state, and recruiting territory.
  2. Someone who will handle the transition gracefully.
  3. Someone who can establish discipline.
  4. Someone who, if not liked by everyone, is at least respected by everyone, and who is a good motivational speaker and tireless promoter (i.e. someone who can raise money and sell tickets).
  5. Someone who would work for an average-to-slightly below average Big 10 salary to ease the sting of KF's severance package.
  6. Someone who is available and would take the job without turning the search/offer process into a circus.
One very familiar name comes to mind who is a "yes" to every one of those items.

I gotta tell you, I'd be really surprised if Danny Mac was offered the job if/when Kirk takes off.

they would want to save some money if they were to let go of KF sooner than later. But i doubt that they would have to go with someone as cheap as Farley. They might want someone a little younger and a little more nationally known.

I'd think he'd be the right choice. Home state guy, clean and upcoming program. In state recruiter. No pressure and as others have said cheap.

Then you need to learn how to read. There is only ONE poster who changed his opinion of Barrent, and that was after he committed to Iowa, not after he changed his committment.

Because people are finding this hilarious and loving it. If he wasn't going to be a huge recruit, why should we be happy about this? Shouldn't we be sad that he won't be wasting a roster spot and scholarship for Iowa? I know you, Monty, haven't been down on this guy, but the majority of posters have been.

There were definitely some sour grapes going on.

Regardless he's no longer a Hawk and I think it's amusing that so many Hawk fans are denying that the negativity with the arrests is effecting their recruiting. A school like PSU can deal with arrests because they are a legit elite school that has the best of everything for their program. A school like Iowa that has to really work for everything is going to have a very negative impact when it comes to these things.

When we look around and see we only have three commits compared to some other schools, it can be a little worrisome even though I have no doubt the staff will put together a good class. Iowa is down to one. Stuff is just going to get harder this season if they continue to struggle on the field.

I think it's funny that any Hawk recruit decommits no matter how good/bad they are. I'm not a talent evaluator. I just enjoy a good meltdown at Iowa's expense.

Meltdown after a decommit? I wish. Unfortunately, there have been so many across the recruiting board over the last few years that I really find it difficult to care that he's gone.

I was excited to have Barrent, and I wish he was staying, but apparently this is the recruiting world we live in.

Big loss for KF as recruiting gets tougher for Hawks. They need to have a spotless program for the next year - tuck those boys in by ten every night.

Looks like Barrent will only see IC in his rearview mirror.
