exactly. The release says "Five players in the class were rated as four-star recruits coming out of high school or junior college." That's the truth. There's no stretching there. That's a verifiable fact.Ummmmm...what?
Haven't seen much analysis from tolfbfan. Would love to get your thoughts on the following as someone who has experienced Coach Campbell recruiting from the inside of another program:
NOTE: THESE COMMENTS ARE STRICTLY MY OPINIONS AND DO NOT REFLECT ANYONE ELSES VIEWS. JUST DON"T WANT ANYONE TO MISREPRESENT CMC BASED ON WHAT I SAY BECAUSE I RESPECT HIM AS A COACH AND PERSON.
1. What was signing day like at Toledo? Campbell does an awesome job with the press conference and Cyning Day party. In fact, I think he is at his best in public at this event. Ours seems like a pretty big deal (see video on Cyclones.tv). A big deal open to public with video and comments. Everyone looked forward to it. He is the master of Coach Speak and only getting better at it! LOL.
2. How unusual is it for him to skip a position completely? It seems like RBs were sacrificed for DL and OL. I believe they evaluate biggest need and attack it with a vengeance. No doubt, offense and defense lines were the focus. Without these filled with quality players, it really doesn't matter in my mind who the running backs and linebackers are because wins won't happen consistently enough. GIVE ME THE HOGS ON BOTH SIDES AND I'LL SHOW YOU A WINNER.
3. Did he talk about "exacts" at Toledo? We've heard about "the plan" and "the process," but last night was the first I'd heard about having "exacts" (ideals) for each position. That is something I don't remember hearing much....I'll plead ignorant on this question.
4. Are solid families one of his "exacts?" It seemed that the coaches talked glowingly about the families of almost each signee. What did he say about you when he announced that your son signed? Campbell was not head coach for that recruiting class. My claim to fame is more or less this sentence. "Zac is a very aggressive player who loves the physical aspect of football. He's extremely intelligent and comes from a football family, which helps him with his playmaking ability."
5. Is Campbell a softy for a good "beat the odds" story? He seems to be so proud of the way Mitchell Meyers came back from cancer. And now we have Robert Hudson and his great story about how football (particularly the conditioning) was key to his comeback.
Yes he is in my opinion. He loves the underdog and is the man you see 24/7. He does take off his head coach label when with staff and others he is comfortable with in private. He absolutely enjoys life and a fun time is eating pizza and watching film.
6. What sort of support for recruiting did he have at Toledo from the administration? He talked last night about President Leath coming around in a golf cart to talk to recruits. And Jamie Pollard (AD) coming out on Saturdays to help with recruitment. He also said that you don't get that everywhere, so it made me wonder if we are doing that better than Toledo.
I think the Toledo Administration did a great job of being supportive and I think he would state that publicly. All coaches talk, so the horror stories around the sport gets passed around to all the staffs.
Others may chime in with their questions too.
Give CW credit for the question about no recruits from Texas. That info has been sitting in front of us all week, but CW was the one to point it out in the press conference. Good job.
I just read that Dan Sichterman had a 40 inch vertical so I watched his tape for the first time. That dude can close in a hurry. He has the frame and athleticism to be very good in the future.
Sneaky athletic Gym Rat with a high IQ. Really plays the game the right wayReminds me of a little bit more athletic version of Jake Lattimer. Plays with that same type of motor.
I will once I get my coupons!Give CW credit for the question about no recruits from Texas. That info has been sitting in front of us all week, but CW was the one to point it out in the press conference. Good job.
Im not too worried about this considering the Jr/So/So we have atop the depth chart next year. We can take a year off at a position like that, get a good one next year and still have the chance to redshirt him if we want. tolfbfan's response seems to be along the same lines.2. Have we ever before had a recruiting class with no RBs?
Seems that we stocked up on DLs at the expense of RBs. Not complaining. I like where we are both with RBs and DLs. Just making an observation.
I am not sure I agree.... we only have 4 scholarship RBs.... This was my only concern with this class honestly, not a real deep backup plan, I am sure we could convert players if needed, but concerning....We have plenty of young RB's.
2017 RB backup plan - LanramI am not sure I agree.... we only have 4 scholarship RBs.... This was my only concern with this class honestly, not a real deep backup plan, I am sure we could convert players if needed, but concerning....
A program like Iowa State just isnt going to have 2 deep caliber RBs 4 deep on the depth chart. If our 4th RB is getting significant playing time and carries we have a problem. Injuries happen, and when they focus on one position it hurts. It will be awesome someday when we can say "ok, 3rd guy went down, next guy in" but we just arent there yet. Point is we have a year to find our next 5th guy, if 4 isnt enough for '17 then 5 or 6 wouldnt have been either because those top 3 plus JoelDozer LannRaming better get every carry. (Ok mix in and end around to Ryen or Jones.)I am not sure I agree.... we only have 4 scholarship RBs....
