*** Cyclone Fanatic Sitcom Tournament: First Four ***

For those curious (like I was, so I made the list):

Never heard of:
WKRP
Newhart
The Bob Newhart Show
The Middle
Welcome Back, Kotter
Mom
The Larry Sanders Show

Never watched:
Growing Pains
The Jeffersons
The DVD Show
All in the Family
Three's Company
I Love Lucy
Family Ties
Married... with Children
Sanford and Son
The MTM Show
Taxi

I know I've watched them but I don't remember s#!t about them:
The Wonder Years
Spin City
Coach
Boy Meets World
Andy Griffith
Roseanne
Happy Days
MASH
The Brady Bunch
Freaks and Geeks
Saved by the Bell
Laverne & Shirley
NewsRadio

Woah, Nelly.... after typing all of that out I feel like I should recuse myself from voting. Or find a group of CF users who aren't geriatrics to bring the bracket into the 21st century.
With luck, you'll eventually be a geriatric and will rue the day you said this.

For some reason I absolutely hate Mom

2 great actresses but terrible show. Allison Janney is better than that.

On top of that I'd consider Freaks and Geeks as a contender for greatest TV show of all time even if they weren't in categories.

It doesn't quite fit "sitcom" but its possibly the highest quality show I've ever seen on network TV.

Everyone should and will figure out their own policy on voting, whether to not vote on matchups with a show they haven't seen, or whatever. I personally don't think it's a problem to vote on a matchup where you're familiar with one show but not the other, in that case I'd say vote for the one you know if you liked it. But again, to each his own.

As for finding a non-geriatric group to bring the sitcom bracket into the 21st century, all I'll say is I do (kind of) envy your youth (I'm 51, not young, not ancient), but the 70s, 80s, 90s were really the golden era of the TV sitcom, prior to reality TV, prior to a zillion other channels, prior to smart devices. You'd be hard pressed to put together a worthy field of 64 going just with sitcoms post-2000.
Agree. As an example, although Letterkenny is hilarious (i'd rather watch it than an episode of Kotter), pretty much everyone back in the late '70s was watching Kotter. Can't really say that Letterkenny has the same impact on society. So my vote would be for Kotter.

So because there was significantly less TV back then and a much less superior show, it should win because it will hurt peoples feelings who were alive in the late 70s with hardly any decent TV to watch?

Huh that’s an interesting way to look at it. So even though you would rather watch letterkenny you’re voting for Kotter because of its impact at the time?

Was just about to post this same thing. I’m not really buying the viewership or impact argument for old sitcoms when there were like three channels.

A lot of the old sitcoms aged horribly and aren’t remotely funny or good. I’m not sure why we have to grade comedy on a curve. This isn’t like something that is technology-dependent like effects heavy sci-fi.

While I agree with this it’s really and I mean really difficult to go back and watch some of those shows if you are younger and haven’t watched them before. All in the Family would make me want to jump through the Tv and beat the **** out of the lead and Andy Griffith is so slow it feels like torture. Comedy evolves and if you weren’t around when it was happening it just doesn’t land the same.
Agree. That adds another interesting dimension to this. If I were to watch an episode of Kotter today, I'm sure I wouldn't find it as funny or entertaining as I did back in the day. But during its time, it was at that forefront of TV comedy. It's kind of like trying to compare teams or athletes from different eras against each other. You have to judge them based on how dominant they were during the era in which they competed. If you put the 1978 Steelers against even a mediocre NFL team today they'd get steamrolled because their OL averaged 250 lbs. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't be considered one of the greatest teams in NFL history.

The vast majority of this list would vanish if you used those parameters though.

Difference of opinion but to me they shouldn’t be considered one of the greatest teams because they would lose by 40-50 against most decent modern teams. Hard to be considered one of the greatest teams when a 2023 mediocre team would wipe the floor with you.

This is so tough to do, especially with a small sampling of voters. But still fun. I don't have HBO or Hulu or any streaming but Netflix. So I'm sure I have no access to several shows. But my first shows as a kid were The Honeymooners, I Love Lucy, Leave It To Beaver and Dennis the Menace. So I do have the advantage of time.

Difference of opinion, IMO it's all relative to the era in which they played, same with TV.

That’s my point though. You were saying that they are one of history’s greatest teams, they aren’t because they would get obliterated today. I agree they are one of the great teams of their era though

Yeah we just look at it differently. I think they're one of history's greatest teams because of how dominant they were during their era. I'd bet around 75% of NFL Hall of Famers wouldn't even make a roster today, to me that doesn't mean they aren't the best players in the history of the game. You see it different, so be it.

Yep that’s very fair

Pluto tv which is a free platform with ads has several classic TV channels which feature several of the older shows here. I'm partial to the Three's Company one but they have DVDyke, I love Lucy, Andy Griffith, family Ties to name a few.
