*** Cyclone Fanatic Sitcom Tournament: First Four ***

Can't vote on these as the only ones I've seen are Letterkenny (gave up on it after a couple episodes) and Freaks and Geeks (watched it as it briefly aired 22 years ago but haven't seen it since).

In my personal picks bracket I've got Letterkenny over MASH. I don't expect that to happen, mind you.

Depends on the age of the voters honestly. Think that will actually be the major factor in the vast majority of these.
Agreed. There are a number of shows in the bracket I've never even heard of, a few more I've never watched, and a couple more that I watched so long ago I only recall my general feeling about them as I watched them. Keep in mind I'm 34, so not super young anymore either.

Let's start the Letterkenny bandwagon now! 16 seeds have won before! Never say never!!!

I don't know whether to hug you or roll my eyes at that comment.

For those curious (like I was, so I made the list):

Never heard of:
WKRP
Newhart
The Bob Newhart Show
The Middle
Welcome Back, Kotter
Mom
The Larry Sanders Show

Never watched:
Growing Pains
The Jeffersons
The DVD Show
All in the Family
Three's Company
I Love Lucy
Family Ties
Married... with Children
Sanford and Son
The MTM Show
Taxi

I know I've watched them but I don't remember s#!t about them:
The Wonder Years
Spin City
Coach
Boy Meets World
Andy Griffith
Roseanne
Happy Days
MASH
The Brady Bunch
Freaks and Geeks
Saved by the Bell
Laverne & Shirley
NewsRadio

Woah, Nelly.... after typing all of that out I feel like I should recuse myself from voting. Or find a group of CF users who aren't geriatrics to bring the bracket into the 21st century.

I knew that would catch some ire somewhere. That's why I added in the word "Super." But I think it speaks volumes about the average age of the active users on CF when someone closer to mid-life crisis years than high school is considered a young whipper snapper.

Same age as you basically, if it wasn’t for nick at nite and Disney replaying shows like growing pains my list would look very similar to yours. I’ve seen most of the shows but legit couldn’t name a particular episode though or name many characters.

Everyone should and will figure out their own policy on voting, whether to not vote on matchups with a show they haven't seen, or whatever. I personally don't think it's a problem to vote on a matchup where you're familiar with one show but not the other, in that case I'd say vote for the one you know if you liked it. But again, to each his own.

As for finding a non-geriatric group to bring the sitcom bracket into the 21st century, all I'll say is I do (kind of) envy your youth (I'm 51, not young, not ancient), but the 70s, 80s, 90s were really the golden era of the TV sitcom, prior to reality TV, prior to a zillion other channels, prior to smart devices. You'd be hard pressed to put together a worthy field of 64 going just with sitcoms post-2000.

Completely agree about it being the golden age of sitcoms. Like @FriendlySpartan above I watched a LOT of Nick @ Nite and TV Land. Very rarely watched Disney channel, though. And that's where most of my exposure to that era comes from.

A more modern bracket would likely have to focus on comedy shows instead of just sitcoms. Then you could include animated shows like Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, Archer, Futurama, Rick & Morty, etc that I feel people around my age spent as much (if not more) time watching while growing up.

I'd also avoid the unforgivable errors of not including The Good Place, Silicon Valley, and Trailer Park Boys.

The bracket for animated shows I'm sure will be a doozy.

I agree with the modern bracket focused on comedy as I don’t really know what qualifies something as a sitcom. One of the conversations I’ve always had with my friends is that the sitcoms/shows you tend to love have a lot to do with where you are in your life at the moment. Shows like friends didn’t really resonate with me because I was too young to really care about the lives of people in NYC. Meanwhile a show like HIMYM came around right as I was about to college and became a favorite.

I think this could be done. Like some have said in here and the selection show thread if you include shows that are on all the different streaming sites out there there may be 64. However not sure how many I would be able to make an opinion as probably about 3/4 a field like that I would have not heard of or watched.

Yeah it’s kinda flipped then. If you make a modern bracket then all those people who watched the Andy Griffith show or all in the family might not have had experience with those. If it’s another super slow shift I might take a swing at putting something like that together.

There are plenty of opportunities for young people to watch old reruns and for old people to watch new shows. The point is not so much old or young people, but simply whether you have actually watched the show enough to have a legitimate judgment.

While I agree with this it’s really and I mean really difficult to go back and watch some of those shows if you are younger and haven’t watched them before. All in the Family would make me want to jump through the Tv and beat the **** out of the lead and Andy Griffith is so slow it feels like torture. Comedy evolves and if you weren’t around when it was happening it just doesn’t land the same.

For those of you that haven’t seen Married With Children it streams on Hulu. Fair warning, if you don’t like to laugh, you won’t enjoy the show.
