Cool Iowa small towns

Visit Haverhill!! Town has an awesome bar!

My favorite small towns in Iowa would have to be Decorah, Burlington, Bloomfield, Pella, Calmar and Fort Atkinson.

Okay, here's a couple more not mentioned:

Story City - old-time merry go round and well maintained downtown with nice shops and restaurants.

Spencer - always liked the look of it driving throung on the way to Okoboji. Nice downtown.

Atlantic - very well-kept community in the rolling hills of SW Iowa.

I grew up playing baseball against Haverhill in the seventies. We also played against Van Cleve.

If you're danish at all, Elk Horn has a whole slew of danish stuff, along with a working danish windmill. They just finished up their Trivolle (sp?) days.

Stanton calls itself the little white town or something like that. Every house in the town is painted white. They have a nice church in the middle of the town. They also have some dorky worlds largest teapot.

You are probably too young to remember, but Stanton's water tower as I recall is a coffee pot. That is because Folgers commercials for decades featured "Mrs. Olson," a native of Stanton. The town is predominately of Swedish heritage.

Lansing (where I live):

We tried to trade you to Dunbar for a couple cracked bats but they pulled out when we wouldn't throw in a case of game balls! Playing Haverhill was always fun as we'd get to pad our batting averages against one of the Goodman boys; I wouldn't believe the lefty pitched for ISU if I hadn't witnessed it in person!

I'll throw in Fairfield as an interesting small-town Iowa destination; ecelectic downtown befitting the home of Maharishi University...

Atlantic is a good town, good people and lots to do...got a theatre, park, pizza ranch, pretty much everything you would find in council bluffs, just in a smaller area.

Elk Horn is an OK town. They are rivals of my town so I can't compliment them anymore. I'll transfer there if my school gets f'ed up.

I was there yesterday, great town. Good at football and have a nice bike course. They have 2 teapots actually, one is by Red Oak, another is more south.

I'll give a shout-out to Walnut (i like the town). Yes it might be a little town but it is the antique capital of Iowa.

They have main street as a brick road and a strip mall there. Lots of bars and a sweet bakery (very good food).

Here are some pictures of each.

Funny, my first thought was WTH is there in Iowa Falls besides the river? :jimlad: We only went there if we needed something from the grocery store on Sunday or wanted Dairy Queen.

This year is the 150th Franklin County Fair, so they're doing some special things to commemorate the anniversary. We always go back for the weekend and take the kids. You can't beat the homemade ice cream or church food stands!

I also grew up in Hampton and will confirm everything MoreCowbell said. Nice town and the fair is always fun.

We took a 2 day trip along the southern 2 tiers of counties last week. Started at Bonaparte and Bentonsport. Drove west on highway 2. Stopped at the Dutchman's store in Cantril. Spent the night in Lamoni and returned across highway 34 the next day. Lot of small town county seats along the way, with the town square format.
