*** COACHING SEARCH THREAD: Sunday, June 7 ***

I'm not making the case that it does, but there's not much to pick at except lack of experience. I just have to assume if he gets the job then he's shown that he has a plan that fits Iowa State.

Or Jamie's had him pegged for 5 years.

lots of people 'round here are gonna feel awful silly in a year when our new coach wins the conference outright and gets us to a 1 seed, and we resurrect these threads.

Why? No one has a crystal ball. No one doubts that next years team should be very good. It's moving this program forward after that which is of the biggest concern. Unless they have said any outlandish things I don't see why anyone should feel silly.

An interesting thing for Encyclopedia Kirk might be to analyze, say, over the last 5-10 years, which has been more successful overall- P5 assistants becoming P5 head coaches or mid major head coaches becoming P5 head coaches?

There's probably way too much noise in that data, and differences in each job both going to and coming from, to give any definitive answers.

Sometimes those midmjor coaches also have experience as P5 asssistants prior to them becoming midmajor HCs. That can't hurt.

The mid major head coach has head coaching experience. But the P5 assistant has P5 experience. Granted, McDermott has left me a bit gun shy, but I almost think the guy who is familiar with what it takes to succeed at the P5 level might have an advantage over the mid major head coach who hasn't had to deal with P5 players. I think that was McDermott ' s downfall. I.e. he thought P5 players were like mid major players. And...they arent.

I'm not even sure what to make of this coaching search anymore. Is ISU interviewing anyone who seem like they MIGHT be a good coach, or just getting desperate? Sure, Moton seems like a good guy who shows a lot of promise as a coach, but is a terrible fit in many ways from where I sit.

During the Big 12 Tournament this year we scored 69, 67, and 70 points. We won those games because we played some of the best defense we played all year. People not only didn't mind it, they thoroughly enjoyed and celebrated it.

Winning is all that matters. I get that playing uptempo is fun, but if the next coach is more defensive oriented, it won't be the worst thing in the world. We may even benefit from it.

That is true. And I'd factor that in. Has any of our mid major candidates ever had P5 experience outside of Underwood? I don't want Underwood because I don't want a Fran McCaffrey. Or Frank Martin type.

We're nearing a point where this probably gets resolved behind the scenes in the next 24-48 hours and announced publicly 24-48 after that.

There really no point in debating TJ vs Underwood/Drew/Prohm.

All are risks and all or none could end up being studs.

Regardless of who it is, we have to rally behind them and give them a shot.

I'm not even sure what to make of this coaching search anymore. I we interviewing for everyone who seem alike the MIGHT be a good coach, or just getting desperate? Sure, Motion seems like a good guy who shows a lot of promise as a coach, but is a terrible fit in many ways from where I sit.

That we are getting so much interest for this position cannot be a bad thing. New experience for JP.

I'm not sure why the mods feel the need to keep some of the candidates a secret but until we know those, it sounds like TJ will be our best choice.

It's a blah group, for sure. To be fair to the poor soul that gets the job, we are likely to be disappointed with just about anyone we get. We are going from someone we loved and who was universally loved by the national media to someone who will make even the biggest Iowa State fan shrug at. I do feel sorry for that person, but I feel more sorry for me.

There really hasn't been a point in doing it for a few days now, but that doesn't stop a few people from having the same running argument with the same bad analogies...

Sure, but its not like it would be real tough to get an interview with Moton. I guarantee you he would jump at any P5 opportunity.

Any idiot can win with next years team. The true test will be 2016-2017. I hope no matter what the new guy does next year that he doesn't get any sort of raise or extension.

I agree with this, in general. An exception could happen with a specific coac and a result that is beyond expectation, along with inroads to a big recruiting class. But Iowa State always seems quick to pull the trigger on extensions any time there's a hint of big upturn.

Don't confuse the names in the rumor mill (it's a very slow college b-ball news period) with true interest.

Also, it's likely that over half of the names we've talked to were or are using this as a strategy to renegotiate.

Because a higher profile candidate, if outed will face pressure to deny interest in the job by his current employer/fans.
