I'm probably one of the very few, but I kinda don't care. Whoever it is, is going to have a steep learning curve and really, unless it's Coach K, it's really a crap-shoot as to whether they'll be successful or not. I just want it to be over with so the fan base can move on.

I know we would have no chance to get him, but I would love someone like a Frank Martin. He is a very underrated coach. But he seems happy at USC. As happy as a crazy uber intense person could possibly be, I mean.

Anyone know if Bryce Drew plays zone like Scott. Thought maybe they both got that from Homer? I've been googling it and haven't come up with much yet.
I read a few of the Maryland vs. Valparaiso tourney previews and none of them mentioned them playing a zone. Sounds like his team was very good defensively.

I didn't vote because none of those names appeal to me, I'm still looking forward to Pres Leath and his "Brand Name" Coach.....

Whomever that may be...............Come on Leath bring in another Johnny Orr/ Fred Hoiberg type......

Go Cyclones Hammer thee University of Nuthin Important!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I voted Prohm, because from what I have read I am starting to get on that train.

You want a guy who wins. The best predictor of success is prior success. Hoiberg was a winner at everything he had done, despite no coaching experience. I think that's what JP saw, and he was right on that.

Prohm has a hell of a record, albeit in a smaller pool. Can he make the jump to the Big12? Who knows. But he sure whipped up in AAA ball, so a shot at the big leagues seems reasonable.

That is not a perfect predictor of course, e.g. Greg McD. But it is still the best single thing to look at.

So I guess between Prohm and TJ, the question is - do you value the head coaching experience more than the Big12 experience, or vice versa?

For me, I think it would be great to have both, with TJ as a great recruiting assistant for a successful head coach. Seems like best of both worlds. Unless the job was promised to TJ and it pisses him off not getting it, and it becomes a cancerous situation. That would be bad.

Hiring is always a crapshoot, you do your best to limit mistakes and hope you don't make one.

I imagine that this same discussion would happen if Gard or Stephens was a candidate to replace Ryan or Izzo. There would be some cranky people pointing out that thei assistants couldn't even get an interview at lowly ISU.
Gard has been an assistant under Ryan for 20 years and Stephens has been with Izzo for 11 years after 4 with Crean at Marquette. I doubt many will question their ability to take over like they would if Otz takes over having spent just three years with Hoiberg in Hoiberg's first three years ever coaching at any level. Many assume that Otz will simply be Hoiball v2.0 but he wasn't even on staff for the best seasons of Hoiberg's tenure. I can safely assume that Hoiberg's system has developed pretty significantly since three seasons ago when Otz was last here.

This feels an awful lot like picking presidential candidates, I'm not really crazy about any of them. Otz or drew Jr for me if there isn't a horny miracle.

That is wishful thinking. No matter who the next coach is, just wait to the first Texas Tech or UAB debacle. Think it was bad with Fred? It will be off the hook with the new guy! Nobody from either the Otz or non-Otz camp will move on short of a perfect season!

I think for the internet fan this is true, but for the more rational types, bumps in the road are to be expected. This season is going to be rough on whoever the coach is only because of the crazy expectations pre Fred's departure. Taking that into account, expectations are going to be all over the place for the 2016-17 season. No matter what this coming season looks like.

Yea I agree. I just think this year will determine how much leeway the new coach gets from the fans in the 2016-17 season. If for whatever reason this coming season is not at least as good as this past one, (and I think most think it will be better) the honeymoon will be over and pressure will begin to mount that a mistake was made.

35 years ago we signed a coach that had a winning Big 10 record and played in the NCAA title game. Now we're down to this. Yikes.

I don't get the TJ love. Yes, he's a good recruiter and yes he knows a few players. That says nothing about how good of a HC he'll be (which he's never done before - unlike all the other candidates).

He's far better than good at recruiting. He was brought back to replace Matt, who was Fred's recruiting guru. And as for no HC experience, seems a certain recent (very successful) Cyclone coach came with the same blot on his resume.........

My #1 would be Bryce Drew. I the he can provide that combination of improving the 2015-2016 team while building for the future. I think he can bring some good things defensively to the 15-16' team while also recruiting at a high level. I like that he has the NBA experience as well.

I would feel a little bad that ISU would take Valpo's golden child, but **** rolls downhill.
