Clayton Custer Transfering

This is kind of a shock to me. I met his girlfriend down in Mexico last week (at least she claimed she was) and she told me how much he loved Iowa State after I told her that's where I go. Best of luck Clay!
He was at a great school but he just wasn't going to get on the floor. Probably just going where he can play.

pretty sure you lose a year transferring in conference. See it uthoff, Jared.

Uthoff didn't lose a year because he transferred in conference, he lost a year because he had already redshirted. He would have only been able to play 3 had he come to ISU instead.

I'm sure Fred has had the opportunity to meet with all the players from this year's team at this point and have a two way conversation about what their goals are and how they fit going forward. It is not mutually exclusive that Custer can love ISU and consider transferring away for basketball reasons.

Fred is on the road recruiting right now. I imagine he has a good idea of what next year team's needs will be. It's been this way in college basketball for at least the last 15 years, Fred and his coaches have just played the game better than most of the others to this point.

It would have been nice to see him stick around and develop behind Morris. Good luck to him though. He seems like a good kid.

I don't get the Morris to NBA stuff. He isn't even being talked about for the NBA. The only place I see anyone saying that is on here.

Diallo or big that can play immediately, transfer big, and transfer PG should be what Fred's going for.

FWIW various draft board sites have him as a second rounder next year. That's a long ways off, but it's not just CF people discussing it.

@TravisHines21: That leaves ISU w/o a second true-PG on the roster and ‘Clones haven’t been recruiting another. Cooke/Burton/Niang probably enough though.

Just from a quick memory scan Monte wouldn't be the first kid to try and get to the NBA early when no one was talking about it and they probably had no business trying to get there.

But the only reason he didn't lose an additional year was because he was released by Wisconsin from that responsibility. The Big 10 rules said that any player who transferred within the Big 10 had to sit out an additional year beyond the 1 year transfer rule of the NCAA unless the school they are leaving releases them. In other words, Uthoff could and should have had to sit out for 2 full years for transferring to another team in the same conference. I believe the Big 12 has the same rules, so this would also apply to Custer.

Any player can transfer to any school within same conf but they have to sit a year and they have to get permission from school they left if it's in same conf. Originally Bo Ryan didn't want Uthoff transfering to Iowa and was holding up process of I recall correctly.

[h=4]Big 12 Conference Rule 6.5[/h]The eligibility of a student-athlete who transfers directly or indirectly from one conference member institution to another shall be determined by NCAA regulations. In the event NCAA regulations require the student to complete on full academic year in residence before being eligible to compete in a sport, the student-athlete shall also forfeit one season of competition in that sport.

To me - that reads like you effectively can't use a red shirt. You lose a year, plain and simple

It's why hok fan thinks Wisconsin is their "rivals".

Good luck to Clayton. He always looked willing and seemed to love ISU. The writting was on the wall with Monte growth and improvement (along with 2 years) left and Hallice Cooke coming in last year that time was going to be difficult to earn the next two years. It make sense for him to find a better situation for him to play.
