Chizik on hot seat?

once you see the staduim half empty, then he is on the hotseat - 2 years and the most season tickets ever sold - case closed GC 4 Life.
Until after six years of what? I agree that Chizik should not be on any "hot seat", but no one will stand for six years of 3 and 4 win seasons. Kansas made it to a bowl game in '05 with no recent tradition of winning. Iowa State has the facilities and a decent resent past and we should be in a bowl game next year. If we finish this season with only two more wins and get about the same next year- believe me that Chizik will be on a hot seat in year three.
We need to beat Baylor - the worst team in the conference last year, bombed by everyone, and with a first-year head coach. Chizik has had one more year than Briles to get things going.
I don't necessarily agree, yes it would be good to get a road win, but a must win, no.
People seem to forget that this program was left in a pretty big hole by Coach McCarney, remember 2006 could have been an 0fer. This was at least a four year rebuild. We have seen a serious upgrade in talent, we just don't have enough good players, yet.
We need to show that once we catch up a bit on talent (recruiting is always the key), we will beat teams like this.
Next year, this is a must win, not this year. Didn't we lose to Baylor at home last time we played them? That was the team that lost to Kansas last game of the season, I think, please correct me if I am wrong.
But I am sure that Coach Chizik doesn't see things the way I do.
Aye, that be the one. Amazing how rockin' the Jack was when we played Iowa that year, and how much of a mausoleum it was for the Baylor game. And yes, we lost to Kansas in the last game. We also lost to Nebraska and Missouri on the road in overtime. 4 losses, 3 in OT... had any one of those gone differently, we'd have been Big 12 North champs. :skeptical:
The difference being McCarney left a much smaller hole for Chizik to fill in than he originally started with (i.e., he left him MUCH better facilities than he started with, to include indoor practice facilities, decent press box, natural turf in the stadium, and some tradition to work with initially).
This is why Chizik isn't going to get the same time to turn things around that McCarney got - he was left with a lot more to start with and thus the expectations and stakes are that much higher. The cool thing is I really think Chizik's going to get it done.
I guess I didn't say that right. What I have read from a few people is that we should win, NOW.
What I was getting at was that Coach Chizik didn't inherit a strong program that was ready to win right away. I agree that he won't get as long as Coach McCarney did to prove himself, but I think that he gets at least three recruiting classes to upgrade talent before there should be any pressure on him.
Remember, he is a new commodity in this state, so it will take some time before he can really make an argument to Iowa kids to come here. In a couple years, we get our share. Plus, I think that Coach McCarney threw a lot of scholarships at borderline players just because they were from Iowa.
The bottom line is this...
We have now had a few games to watch some of Chiziks new recruits in action and to also see the development in some of our older players. There has been a drastic improvement in the level of our play even if we have lost a few close games. Sure we have made mistakes in coaching and in our players execution but we have been in the hunt and probably should have easily won a few of those games. To say that this team has not made tremendous strides is foolish. Sure some of our losses have been disappointing but in all fairness when your team can erase a 21 point halftime deficit or watch a 20 point halftime lead evaporate and still fight all the way to the finish and have a legit shot at winning the game? Come on.... In past years those teams would have packed it in and it would have been blowout city. Chizik is a fighter and his players are becoming fighters to the very end. There is no intimidating Iowa State anymore. Thank Chizik for that.
And I agree. I'm not one of those that thinks he needs to win 7-8 games and get to a bowl game this season otherwise this season is a complete failure and he should be on the hot seat starting next season. On the contrary - a logical Cyclone fan cannot deny the changes that have occurred in this program since this time last year, and the frustrations that we are having to deal with on a weekly basis is one of the costs of watching a very young team - and coaching staff - come of age.
I think next year's the year that Iowa State begins blowing to door open in college football.
This was the first game that Jamie Pollard came to after being hired as the future AD. I was in the stands thinking "Man, Pollard is probably wondering if he can still back out." The atmosphere was dead and so was the play on the field. A fumble in the end zone cost us the game, as I recall.
Well said. I'm the one that said 25th is about right on the list given his W/L record (which is really the most important criteria to any fanbase). I also think that a hotseat listing should really only be 10-15 long because that's about the maximum number of coaches that will be fired at the end of any given season. So I agree with everyone else who says that Chizik isn't on a hotseat. FWIW, a 5-7 or better record this year would probably drop him all the way down to #45 on those listings.
The only problem I see with this website, as others have stated, is that there shouldn't be 25 coaches on a hot seat at any one time. IMO, the top 10 is all that really matters. The rest should either be safe or on the edge.
I don't know of anyone who expects 7-8 wins. I am confused, though, about fans who run away from quantitative expectations about this season.
I've upped my giving, I've talked several reluctant Cyclone friends into renewing their season tix. I expect some conference wins this year, like against Baylor, Nebraska, and Texas A/M, who all should trail us in program development.
I don't know how many football threads you've read the past several weeks, but if you've read enough of them you will know that there are a number of Cyclone fans on this site that will consider this season an utter failure if we don't reach at least 7 wins.
I think you hit the nail on the head, maybe without even knowing it. The fear of many of the long time fans (many that I know anyway), was that all of these costs would increase, but the product on the field would be bad.
People have gone to a lot of Iowa State games over the years, and never realized what a value it truly was. Instead of a gradual increase, Jamie Pollard raised the prices to market level.
It's completely natural to be impatient, and Coach Chizik will not be afforded the luxury of time to get this thing going. Fortunately, I think that he is the right guy for the job and expectations.
Agree. There are stills tons of fans who have no idea of what ISU is up against regarding facilities and athletics budgets. That is why although I am waiting for better results on the field to be convinced Chizik was the right hire, I know what HAS to happen for anyone, including Gene, to succeed here. Some things already have: increased budget, coaches' pay, more support staff, etc. This, plus all of the facilities improvements, increases expectations, more than Mac (and certainly Walden) ever had. It's a new era in Cyclone sports, that's for sure.
