Listening to ESPN radio and TV over the last couple days , they are blasting Texas for leaving Charlie Strong hanging. Finebaum, an SEC cheerleader, called it one of the most disgraceful things he's seen in college football in recent years. Obviously, he has had his head in the sand- the situations at Baylor, UNC and about 90 other things are far worse.

Has he or other ESPN talking heads spoke to Charlie Strong to get his perspective? Have they considered the circus that would occur if Charlie Strong was fired this week? All focus of the media and fans would divert away from the game against TCU and the efforts of the kids.

I don't know if the "experts" have even considered that Charlie Strong already knows he is gone and has asked Texas to keep his firing quiet until after the game to make game week as normal as possible for his kids?

Yeah, that's it.

I think we've all seen the blueprint for the most ethical way to fire a coach, last year and CPR. Sunday morning after the Kansas game, Texas should have announced Strong's firing, and let him coach the TCU game, say bye to players, send off the seniors, and let fans give him a standing O after the game.

Can't be worse than this circus, letting athletics boosters leak info to ESPN and delay the inevitable. The cynic in me says the delay is because of some contract clause that reduces Texas' buyout if Strong 'finishes' a third season.

....
I agree with the above w/ Rhoads, and link below from randypete - that the best way is let him know week before last week, let him finish season with players, and get a head start on new coach and holding down recruits.

Last year with CPR only worked because of the previous relationship between JP, Rhoads, and the fanbase.

Strong has never been well liked by the Texas fans. I don't think he would, but it's possible he would take the money and leave before the end of the season. Start working on his resume for his next job as a DC at a power school. It's possible that the fans wouldn't even want him to coach the last game.

And there's nothing cynical about your contract idea. Highly possible he gets paid more if he's dismissed midseason or there's some other clause in there to delay the firing.

You're damned either way. If you let him go now, they roast you for not waiting till the end of the season. You wait till the end of the season, the same people roast you for "stringing him along."

Charlie is a good man but he's kind of done this to himself by under-performing. As someone else said, I have a hard time feeling sorry for someone with a $20 million buyout.

Go watch that 10 second clip of him getting asked about it after the game. Absolutely brutal.

Yep. The ten million is great and lots of people have it way worse. But there's a human element to it. I believe Strong put everything he had into the job. Failing in such a high profile position isn't something I'd want for anybody. And **** Texas for how they have handled it.

It's not like they treated Mack well. Charlie knew exactly what he was getting into...which is why his agent made sure he got PAID. Take heed, Tom Herman.

Charlie is a good man and sets the right ideals for how he wants his kids to act.

IMO it seemed like he struggled with who he hired as assistant coaches. Not sure if he brought many guys with him from Louisville or not. He will get an elite d-coordinator position if he wants it, within 13 months His resume is too good.

If he wants to be a head coach in the next year or so, he is going to need to understand what went wrong at Texas and convince an AD he learned from theTexas experience. Some great coaches (Belichek & Carroll) were fired

I can see him as an SEC or ACC DC nxt season. He would make a good choice for a school like Purdue.

Texas is STILL a great job. Easily a top 10 job and arguably a top 5 job.

People questioned if the Michigan job was still elite a couple years ago. Nobody would question that today. Texas just needs to hire the right coach.
