As much as CMC has done, I'll always maintain that we've yet to see QB and WR development.
Purdy came in and left as a legit B12 QB and is now showing that with less than a year of development, he's much improved. Forcing him to largely stay stationary was the worst thing given his style and dynamic nature. Play calling didn't help, but preventing him from using his biggest asset held him and us back from even greater things. You could see some of that with Dekkers this year - he played best when rolling out but I've heard 1st and 2nd hand how that was "corrected".
Same with WRs. We've had some studs over the years, but they were guys that came in year 1 and left largely the same elite talent. Anybody that came in decent or good stayed almost exactly where they were at.
I totally agree. He was 1 second behind ALWAYS, on when or when not to escape the pocket. His pocket awareness needs to vastly improve, and you hope it does in his 2nd year.
It doesn't help that we had Purdy back there previously. His awareness was great as a Freshman, and we were spoiled.
I don't think the portal is like shopping at HyVee. Just head down the OL isle and pick the players you want!!
There are so many teams seeking out players that can contribute. Unless a school has a lot of NIL money to throw at portal guys, I think it is tough for a school like ISU to bring in something like 8+ portal players. Look at teams like Bama, Oregon, A&M, etc. They are loosing 18+ players to the portal, so they will be very aggressive in restocking their roster. Also schools like Arizona State and Colorado where there was a coaching change, they have the promise of open-competition for playing time.
From what I have seen of Iowa State's focus in the portal, it is to replace guys who transferred out:
- RB: Harris > Silas
- LB: Lovett > Zenzen
- WR: Higgins > Shaw & Michaud
- DE: Anderson, Gray, Peterson > ?????
- DB: Chambers Kyle > ?????

I would say the “rates” are very similar in terms of hierarchy to the highest paid position in the NFL. There’s a reason why QB generally sees the most movement in the portal.
Different times, circumstances, and reasons. PfP, no sitt out, grad transfer, etc has changed the landscape if you haven't noticed. JUCO players probably suffering the most.
The best QBs do that though. I mean, look at how Mahomes, Rodgers, Burrow, and Allen focus on staying in the pocket and just taking what the defense gives you.
That info doesn't really do anything to help our team. We don't need to tell other teams how much they need to offer to steal our guys and the only thing that could come from our players knowing how much everyone else is making is locker room issues.
It's 100% about injury prevention. It always had been. It was the case for Brock as well, but I agree with others that you have to let the kid do what he does best to a point.
I think you're giving the staff too much credit on both ends.
As far as QBs go, Brock is the undisputed GOAT here at that position here, but did he actually ever improve all that much? I really dont think he did. Dekkers came in here having 0 clue on how to read a defense. That should never happen in year 3. And some of the other QBs to come through here such as Real Mitchell and Zeb Noland dropped out of the FBS level entirely eventually.
On WRs I agree all the guys you listed are very good. Only issue is that Jones, Lazard, and Butler haven't been in here in a very long time now. Post Butler and Jones our WR play has been outright bad outside of X and Petteway, both transfers. Guys like Noel, Wilson, Shaw, and Scates have been more of the norm than Butlers and Xs out there. I don't think we've actually had a quality WR2 in almost 4 years now. That's pretty bad!

I think you're sorta right, sorta not. All those guys know how to navigate the pocket, but they also know when something isn't working and get the hell out of there when needed. The biggest issue with Dekkers is that he could not at all read the field or the pocket. I remember the KU game where he shook off a sack and then proceeded to just stand there and get sacked by someone else a few seconds later. Knowing when a play is dead is how those guys are who they are.
I hope you’re right! I think the talent is there, time for our coaches to get the most out of the guys we have on our roster.

The portal for us ( thus far) has been a win for us overall.
I do think we upgraded at RB losing Silas and getting Harris the transfer from Stanford. I also think we have a legit Big 12 WR coming in with Higgens, he tore up competition at a lower level.
The development of Hunter Dekkers AND the offensive line is the key to this spring, summer, and fall improvement.
