Car Buying Process

Nothing is more important than picking a car with a cool color. If the color itself doesn't wow you than the cool name of the color should, like Ocean Blue Pearl Effect, British Racing Green, Metallic Meridian, etc.

This^^^ When I ordered my Wrangler I had choices like Firecracker Red (um no), Bright White (boring), Billet Silver (hello, a billet is a thing not a color) and then there was Hydro Pearl Blue. We had a winner.

BTW, if buying new see if your employer has any arranged discounts with a manufacture. Mine had a 2% below invoice deal for Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep. When ordering my Jeep, both dealerships I went to told me they would sell it to me at invoice since I was having it built at the factory to my specs and it wouldn't be sitting on their lots. Once the Jeep arrived (it took a month to be built and delivered) I showed up with the 2% corporate discount paperwork and they sliced the 2% off of the price.

Was kinda cool ordering it from the factory. I was able to log into Jeeps Customer portal and check on the build process (frame assembly was on Tuesday, body/paint on Wednesday etc) and when it arrived the window sticker was printed with "This vehicle was built especially for C.John"

But yes, always choose a color with an inspiring name....
 
Well they got within $100 of my offer so I go in to sign for my new (to me) vehicle tonight. Pretty ecstatic.

If you haven't signed, you're not quite done yet. This is where a few magical fees appear "that are required by law", but you probably haven't been informed about up until now. You'll need to review the fees and make sure what they're saying is the real deal. Some of it, such as state registration fees, truly are on you. Others aren't. Until you've signed the final paperwork and it's sitting in your driveway, the game isn't over. Don't be afraid to ask for some time to review what is put in front of you, and don't pay something you don't feel you should be paying for.

When that's done, enjoy your car. You've chosen well.

The "documentation fee" is a total sham and money grab for stealerships. I refuse to pay them that fee and most will cave if you fight it for a few minutes.

I also make them remove their Dealership info, decal, logo or whatever it may be, from the new vehicle. Thats free advertisement for them on my vehicle - not happening.

Basically, anything that isn't a state required fee. If you've already agreed on price and you sit down tonight to find you owe more than that, question everything. I don't recall the fee that was tacked onto the last car I bought, but I remember it was $395. We had already done the handshake and there was no financing. I told them there was no way in hell I was paying it, and I didn't. They "graciously" offered to pay it for me.

This article doesn't help a lot, but there may be a nugget or two in there for you.

State fees, yes, I get it - you have to pay them, and they're you're responsibility. The other stuff...no.

Probably that damn pesky documentation fee that I was talking about. Can't tell me it costs $300-400 to file and send paperwork for a new vehicle.

I'll be a fight and threaten to walk, but they will "waive" it.
 
You basically have tax, title, and license that will be charged as pass throughs. The rest are extras for them.

In regards to the logo, I just prefer to not have it but it doesn't do anything. I always make the last part of the deal, before I agree to it that any company info on my vehicle will mean a $1000/year advertising agreement. They make sure it's off then.


Edit: a lien fee if financed is legit also.

That may have been it. I was really angry - we had everything done...or at least I thought so. We were paying cash, there was no trade-in and we had agreed on price, the rest should have been easy. There was nothing left to haggle over. They even did the good cop/bad cop routine with me where my salesman got up and another guy came and sat down while the other "talked to his manager". After a few statements from the new guy (who was a complete moron), I told him to just get the hell out of the little cubicle we were sitting in. He left.

Many people say they don't want it. I add the advertising thing right before signing the agreement. It makes sure there is no oops. I'm guessing tonight when you sign paperwork.

Just tell them politely you don't want any logo and you want a clean look. If they give you flack go the advertising route. Don't seem over zealous to take it home right away, then they know you are attached to the vehicle. Realistically, as soon as you sign the paper and they send the paperwork, you could probably take it home tonight or tomorrow.

Btw, you know how they take it off? They use a hair dryer like you or I would just heat an edge and peel it off.
