WHY HASN'T THE FLOOR AT HILTON BEEN RENAMED TO HONOR JOHNNY?

The Soooooo Pig Cheer...... it Creeped him out.
Also, after getting hammered at K-State, he decided it is much easier to win in the Valley and not worried about getting fired every other year.
Melvin got it exactly right here. Funny, but altman looked like he wanted nothing to do with the pig cheer, and it certainly made him uncomfortable........he probably had a what the hell moment and received clarity.

My thought was: the list could (and should) have been better
Was that because
a. BVD was such a bad AD ? Should an AD have an "emergency shortlist" in case a coach can't function (not just leaving or fired ?), or:
b. ISU was not a premier destination as some of us thought it was ?
c. The sideshow gave ISU a negative image (assistant coaches found themselves locked out of their offices, two starters were arrested with marijuana posession, another was arrested with public intoxication, 2 players with no remaining eligibility were arrested with public intoxication - 1 also with marijuana possession and one former coach was charged with child pornography)
I'm just curious.
I know a lot of the fans would like to have McD replaced, but we can learn from the past that it's not easy to find a new coach.
1. None of the candidates (Altman might be an exception because we don't know how he'd deal with working in big conference) can be considered successful. They might be rising stars in 2003, but so was McD when we hired him.
2. When JP fired WM, looked like he already had a name. Does he have an emergency list ready (I know he did when GC left but I wasn't sure whether CPR was the first choice) ?
3. Do we have good candidates who are really interested in coming to Ames ? Lopes and Altman didn't want to come here. McClain did but didn't get the job. Lebo didn't want to because his recruiting area was in the SEC
Just a thought. Personally, I want to see the team play better but when McD is our coach and when he's still our coach, I will keep on supporting him and the program, like the others: D-Mac, GC, WM, LE. It's up to JP and the administration to decide. However, I do respect people who want to see changes made, there's nothing wrong with having different opinions because we are all Cyclones !

I guess I don't agree that he got "hammered" at K-State. He was there 4 years. They went to the NCAA once, the NIT twice (once getting to the final 4) and he was named coach of the year in the Big 8 once.
He didn't light the world on fire, but it sure looks pretty good from where we are right now.
As I've stated several times. We would end up with a coach that makes everyone say "Who?"...
Of course that was the case with CPR and everyone is thrilled. Hard to say what would happen but there is a better than fighting chance that we would go backwards instead of forwards.
I don't like where we are and am disappointed in the GMac tenure to date. I shudder to think at what would happen if we tried to go another direction yet again.
No win situation....for now I will continue to root for our team and coach because the best thing for this situation is for both to find success.

GMac and Jeter were the only known candidates in the last search but there were probably feelers sent out to other guys at that time like Mark Turgeon. GMac was offered the K-State job prior to ISU's offer and I think Arizona State was also very interested. GMac was the best guy available and interested at that time.
The search that ended up with Morgan getting the job was a fiasco by an incompetent AD. Lebo's wife was supposedly the one who turned down ISU, not Lebo himself. Lebo will likely not last much longer at Auburn. Altman didn't want the job at that time as well as some others.
I don't think it has been mentioned in this thread but the rumored leading candidate at the time Orr was hired was Coach K who was at Army at that time.
Yet it still produced going deep into the NIT the first year and then the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament the very next..

Oh, come now.....would a very underachieving team have beaten 2nd ranked Kansas on the road that season? We didn't "squeak" into the tournament, if we truly had, we would have had a much lower seed than #9.

Speaking of Arizona State, how did they get Herb Sendek? He has done a nice job there.

I am almost sure I heard his name in the mix when he coached at VCU but it could've been media speculation. Either way....he would've been WAY better choice than McD I think. At least he knew what it took to win in a top conference even if only as a player. AND last I checked, he has done more at Oklahoma than McD has here, even if it is minimal. AND at least his teams make it to the tourney!!!
