Candidates to Replace LE back in 2003

My only point here is, we could've got Capel for about the same money as McD.
Records since then in same amount of time:
J.Capel 81-41 (31-23 in conf.) and 2 NCAA app. with an elite 8
G.Mc. 56-59 (15-38 in conf.) 0 apps in ANY postseason tourney
You can draw any conclusions you want from that(ex. Oklahoma gets better recruits blah blah), we've had some good players in that time too but coaching is what is key here. He wins, we don't....something has to change!!!
 
I haven't had time to read most of the responses, so I'm not sure if I'm duplicating anything.
Not sure what you mean by "interesting, isn't it?" (whether it means WM was the best choice at the time, in retrospect, because nobody wanted the job or it could have been disastrous if we hired anyone but Altman, who didn't want it anyway, etc)

The worst thing about replacing LE was timing. The fiasco came to light in April. That meant that, if the AD chose to boot him, there were going to be almost no prospects available because any school that wanted to make a change would have moved on it as soon as that team was done for the season, and coaches who were looking elsewhere would bolt immediately, too. And those two things would have had to synchronize even if LE's situation had been during Final Four week. (Not to mention, budgetary considerations AND taking into account if prospects didn't want to step into such an unusual set of circumstances).

In essence, if it all went down a few weeks earlier, or during a different year, certain things might have changed.

I still think the best bet in that situation would've been to name WM interim coach, then see where the cards fell. But even that's easy to say seven years later.

Here are the 4 top candidates to replace Eustachy according to Iowa State Daily that time:

Creighton coach Dana Altman, Wyoming coach Steve McClain, Fresno State coach Ray Lopes, Tennessee-Chattanooga coach Jeff Lebo, and ISU assistant Wayne Morgan. Altman and Lopes removed themselves from consideration before interviewing. McClain was interviewed but didn't get the job.

Here's where they are now:
Dana Altman: still at Creighton. People say that he likes to stay as big fish in a small pond. Since 2003 until end of last season: 134-65, 4 NIT and 2 NCAA. NCAA and NIT appearances ended in either 1st or 2nd round, 1 regular season championship

Steve McClain: fired from Wyoming in 2006. Now an associate HC at CU

Ray Lopes: resigned from his position at Fresno State in 2005 based on his involvement in NCAA rules violations in the recruiting process. Now assistant coach with U of Idaho Vandals.

Jeff Lebo: now at…..Auburn after leaving UTC after 2003-2004 season. Record at Auburn: 81-76 with 1 NIT appearance.

Interesting, isn't it ?

He was tired of the expectation at NC State. The fans were getting restless because he kept on losing to UNC and Duke (8-38 against them) and they kept on comparing him with the previous coach, who is none other than Jimmy Valvano (Jimmy V). So there was a lot of feeling of never being truly accepted and ASU came up with lots of money as well as the chance to build a program (someone puts it as "the WBB team sells more tickets than the MBB" before Hendek arrived.

There were coaches between Sendek and Valvano. Sendek had rebuilt the program, and then the expectations took off.

The coaching pool of both BVD and later JP speaks more of their inability to hire coaches. Or rather, their inability to even have a decent pool of candidates. Make JP head of fundraising and cheerleading. At this time we need an athletic director who knows how to win.

In case you haven't noticed, we are winning in virtually every sport except MBB. Our athletic performance has increased dramatically since JP arrived.

I know, I know...nobody cares except for MBB and FB.
 
An interesting side note about McClain. McClain's long time assistant at the time he was seeking the ISU job was Randy Rahe from Bancroft, Iowa. Randy Rahe is now the Head Men's BB Coach at Weber State University. And doing an exceptional job.

I think I know what it was. I remember the press conference where he was introduced as the new Razorbacks coach and everyone in the room started screaming the "SOOOUUUUEEE" thing and Altman's face was priceless. He was kind of politely sooeeeing himself but was looking around at all these other maniacs and his face clearly was saying "What have I gotten myself into?" That nite or the next day he was outa there.
 
Sorry - tired of reading the thread so apologies if this has been said. NOBODY except WM wanted the ISU job after the LE/BVD debacle. Who wants to coach at a place where the institution won't support you? Now we've got the opposite - too much support and no results.

Rahe actually never coached for McClain. He did spend 13 years with Stew Morrill at Colorado St and Utah St and then a couple of year at Utah with Ray Giacolletti (sp ?).

He has been very successful at Weber St and will likely get a better job sooner than later. If ISU is in the market for a new HC within the next couple of years, they should take a long look at Rahe.
 
Big Bake- There you go again on Morgan. Tell me how many NBA players were on that 2nd Morgan team that you said underachieved so badly with only a second round finish in the NCAA (where they were beat by National champ Carolina). The fact is that team beat some teams that did have NBA talent, so Morgan did a great job of coaching it. And his 3rd year wasn't that bad with a winning record, Big 4 championship and would have been in the NIT again had JP lobbied for a home game. Face it, Morgan could coach and his worst year was better than any GMac has had so far.
 
With all due respect, JP made the right choice to offer McD that time. McD was a hot commodity, like another member said that even EIU wanted him (though they denied it).
The problem is: in most cases, getting a new coach is like buying a lottery.
Take for example, the most recent one: the current Auburn football HC. When a school in Midwest hired him, the fanbase was excited because he was considered one of the next generation of bright young coaches. No one would expect he would hired his fishing buddies as coordinators and his record after 2 seasons was just 5-19.
See also the candidates: everyone, except Altman, was considered hot commodity. I know the list could be much better, but those coaches were really successful that time. And probably those were the coaches we could afford that time.
