Cameron Lard Eligible at Semester?

I don't think he should play right away, but hasn't he been playing some with a JuCo down south while finishing up his academics? Or am I just completely making that up?

Good question. I don't know either. I thought he had just been focusing solely on academics and getting that all wrapped up. I could be wrong, but I thought the last organized basketball he played was with his AAU team in the summer of 2015. He was never eligible at the last high school he enrolled in, right?

Playing or practicing? If playing, he'd be losing eligibility.
Could be practicing, could be some prep school, I really don't know. That is why I was asking. I just remember a while back, when we were figuring out what was happening with him after he was ineligable, someone saying that he was playing in some games. No idea for who/what level.

Fiction. It was a tiny minority that wanted Carter to play more. He was a trainwreck on D last year to anyone watching.

Young is way better than Carter, and is playing significantly more.

3 minutes vs. Drake. I don't like that trend line.

Everyone would be a lot better off if they would just realize that Freshman aren't going to play much in Big 12 play unless the team is short on numbers or just super-super young. It's nothing against those players, the Big 12 is good and eats 3 star freshman big men especially for breakfast. They just aren't ready. I just don't get the obsession with it. This thread is terrible.

See that is where it was hazy for me. I thought he got ruled ineligible at the school he had transferred to, so he transferred again to a small Prep school to at least play basketball, but I could be wrong on that as well.

Well, I got some news for ya. The team is going to be both short on numbers and super young next year. I'm not saying throw in a freshman just because you have him, but getting them as many minutes as possible this year will pay dividends in the years to come.

Your guess is as good as mine. Any posters out here who follow recruiting closely that can help us out? Even a basic timeline since he transferred from Natchitoches or wherever he was as a high school junior would be helpful. It's confusing. This hasn't been a recruitment so much as it's been an odyssey.

There will be a lot working against him, even with the lack of depth in front of him.
1. We don't know how good he is or if he has a Big 12 ready frame.
2. We don't know if he's in game shape.
3. We don't know how quickly he can pick up the nuances of the offense and defense AND get used to playing with new teammates. Young's been there since the start of the school year and it's still fair to wonder just how much of a grasp he has on the defensive rotations.
4. Prohm has shown that he's not going to play guys unless he trusts them, and there are no more cupcakes on the schedule to ease him in and let him get some reps.

If he's indeed eligible to play (I thought he wasn't, but whatever), it's not impossible for him to leapfrog Holden or Young, but it's a tall order for an 18 year old kid to jump in midstream and contribute meaningful minutes for a P5 program. We'll see. If he earns playing time, I'm all for it. But I'm not expecting much from him this year. It's most likely too steep of a learning curve.

On top of that fact he was and still is an academic risk... Let the guy work himself into the flow of school, schemes and practice and let him hit the ground running game 1 fall of 2017.

Pretty sure he is at a prep school that sometimes plays against small jucos. I think he posted 18 pts, 17 rebs against one.

This, too. I don't know how ready he is for the academics side of it. It could be all he can handle just getting used to living in Ames, getting to class and practice and getting all the work done. Big changes for a kid.

Well you obviously haven't been paying attention.Carter last year, and now Solomon Young, are our best players because they are tall but yet the coach never plays them.
People last year wanted Carter to play for a couple minutes a game and give fouls and a break to the other guys. Not because he was ready or good.

Young actually looks pretty ready. He should play more.

If a player isn't ready or good enough then they have no business being on the floor unless it's a blowout or there are absolutely no other options. If you're putting a scrub in just to give fouls then you're probably hurting the team more than you're helping it.

Freshman can and do play at plenty of other schools. Iowa has 2 FR bigs that are starters for crying out loud (Cook- injured obviously).

They key is recruiting FR capable of getting on the court.

I happen to think Young is and will continue to play more. He's at least playing enough to help him make the transition into a starting role next year.

My point is there is no equating Young and Carter. Carter is likely a lost cause. Young is a foundation piece to the future course of our program. And back to your original point, you can have more than 1 good post on the team at any given time.

If a post cant help this team... is he really worth taking on anyway?
based on the opinions of Lard's game by recruiters and our staff (stuck with him through all this ****) I think he has the ability to help this team, that is why it is even being discussed. But him not playing truly competitive basketball in over a year is why he should not be thrown to the Wolves if he hasn't gotten acclimated yet.

Well when our defense is get out of the way because we can't afford fouls I disagree.
