Caitlin Clark

I've only watched here a little bit but with the stats she puts up, wouldn't you think the team would have a better record? Is it a lack of supporting cast around her? I don't understand basketball enough to know the answer but you would think having the best player in the country might lead to a better ranking. The Covid issues maybe played a bigger impact than maybe I thought.

Either way, I'm not a hawk fan, but watching her play is fun to watch.

I am interested in how their recruiting goes forward now. It had become clear that iowas offense is basically a two person show. Will other solid offensive players look at the situation and shy away thinking they will not see the ball much? I don’t know if kids look at those things that much. Think their center may be done. Wonder if Crooks ma be their recruit to replace.

ESPN has their 2022 class rated as #22 with three top 100 players so seems good at this point. Don't know anything about 2023. These days classes aren't complete until the portal transfers are settled** although Bluder (Feuerbach dropping into her lap not withstanding) hasn't seemingly been big on transfers at all. Wouldn't expect other additions, think they have a lot of peeps on scholarship.

There is some chatter that Monika Czinano might come back for the bonus covid year. Was talked about up here around the Gopher game (she's from Minnesota and her sister is a bench player for the Gophers). It think they might be better if she doesn't. She can be a very good offensive post presence but doesn't play good defense and can't rebound worth a lick, both weaknesses for the Hawks. Their center that's out for the year is a better rebounder and better defender (even as a freshman last year).

** Our two transfers in the rotation show how big a deal that can be. Jordao has obviously been a great piece and with the injury to Fritz, Diew has played an important role.

They kinda are what they are, a decent Top 25 team, not a great team. Fun to watch at times but not enough defense or rebounding to beat other good teams consistently. Maybe going to stumble into the season end here with six players out (two for the year). Last year they were about the same but upset Kentucky (IIRC) to get to the Sweet Sixteen to end up with a good season. They did seem to be finding a little mojo with their threes starting to fall but than had a slew of injuries which pretty much takes them out of contention in the Big 10. My hapless Gophers travel to IC later this week but only streaming so will miss seeing if Whalen can right the ship after getting humiliated in their last matchup.

She's not eligible. To be eligible, at least one of three things has to be true:
  • You have to be four years removed from high school
  • You must turn 22 by the end of the calendar year (she turned 20 in January)
  • You must have your four-year degree (or be scheduled to receive it within 3 months after the draft)
Unless she graduates a year early, she has to wait until 2024.
You have to be 22 to get into the WNBA? That seems bass ackwards compared to the male counterpart. Women should be allowed to go in as soon as they want to, especially considering they could be slowed down by things like pregnancy during their playing careers.

That's kind of what my thoughts are. Maybe she is the female equivalent of James Harden or Russ Westbrook? That's not a knock either, they are really good players

So you've never commented on the looks of Iowa Mens basketball players? Ever? Just curious.

Not exactly a comment but...

That's a meet "one" of the three criteria, not all, so you do not need to be 22 to go to the WNBA. Although if you meet one of the other two you are likely 22 or close.

The criteria might be a little restrictive but an underclassman making a WNBA roster would be quite a feat. There are only 144 rosters spots and these are being competed for from players all over all the world.

Starting last year, due to the "extra" Covid year, players who enter the draft have to renounce their remaining college eligibility. If I understand this right than our own Joens would need to do that to declare for the WNBA draft this spring.

I was just talking to an Acie Earl last night about her. He coaches 9th grade boys at City. I was getting ready to do game at Liberty. He told me same thing. He said she could go overseas and make a million. While waiting to get in WNBA. We both agreed how stupid it is that she can't go now.

A few publications/websites have Czinano getting drafted.

^ That's interesting.

The top dozen or so players making real jing playing pro get most of their income from endorsements and overseas contracts. Both of those are generally built around fame and recognition playing NCAA ball and most of the gals were on elite teams. Building "a brand" is more important in women's pro ball than in men's. The first rounders in WNBA will only get $66K to $72K this next draft. Clark might be close to that fame/recognition part now even on a team that is not elite. Might still be a best plan to play out her college career unless some Euro/China team offered her crazy money.

Not an easy career for the non-elites. And why I am so happy for Bridget Carleton that she has been able to carve out a niche with the Minnesota Lynx. Non-starters (and even non-elite starters) are added and dropped from rosters like they were trading cards.

Wow. That seems just crazy to me although once you are out of the first round a roster spot is pretty hard to land. She's a likeable kid (via interviews) and a good college scoring post but if Gustafson can't find a spot there is no way she is.

Edit: Going to link your post to the ISU team thread because of Joens numbers.

Would an $EC school put together a BIG NIL deal for her - could likely make more than she could in the WNBA??
