BYU Postgame Thread

How do you know he isn't going for the ball? Did you even watch the game or are you just going off the ******* still shot? He was clearly anticipating Mika to go up with the ball and Mika faked instead. It was unfortunate that he got him in the eyes, but it was just bad luck on both their parts. It's a foul to the face, the definition of a flagrant I, but it's not a punch to the head or kicking someone on the ground. It was just as much a basketball move as elbowing someone in the face while attempting to clear out.

I know he wasn't going for the ball, because the ball is at his waist and his eyes are in his head. He went for the head and eyes, not the ball.

Yeah I watched the game, it was a good game, and I'm glad ISU pulled it out. I thought this might have been Thomas' coming out party, but I was scared that the backups were going to ultimately blow the game (they tried, BYU just didn't take advantage).

It cannot be easy to hit someone in the eyes who is moving. Its just a fluke thing. Should he have been tossed, IDK it was a bad situation all around. I guess I don't blame the refs but not sure it was the right thing. The guy held the ball high all night, Kane anticipated what he was going to do and guessed wrong.

Depth could potentially be an issue this year in games like this. Should Fred be on the phone with Paul to see if Creekmur can walk on? Not many schools would have a player of his caliber available.

So you are saying it was intentional then? Make up your god damn mind.

This is true, and like you said the refs had little choice, but to do what they did. Like I already said I doubt he was trying to get his eyes. It just looks really bad when you make the play at his head when the ball is nowhere near there.

Okay good, so I wasn't imagining things. That's kind of what I saw too. There were a few fouls on us where I was really wondering where the foul was. Like the one on Hogue. I understand that it looked like a big flop on Hogue (I think he got knicked on the mouth, but he sold it), but even so, I don't understand how that's even a foul on him. I mean the big center swung his elbows, barely hit Hogue as Hogue was standing there and they still called him for a foul. If anything, it should be the other way around if you're a ref.

Knicked in the mouth that caused him to bleed.

We have depth, at least depth better than Creekmur. SDW and Bluford are very capable off the bench.

Enjoying reading BYU's message board.

"If thats what you call Big 12 ball, count me out."

"Iowa States not a good team, we just shot ourselves in the foot."

"Iowa State got away with some pretty bad no calls"

One guy mentions "It's hard to blame refs for a loss when Iowa State had 3 starters on the bench to end the game" and their response was "Thats Iowa States fault."

All-in-all the refs were okay.

They awarded them a couple 1970's era NBA continuations in the second half but for the most part, they did a good job.

The refs were awful. Not just biased against us, but they'd screw us on a bunch of calls, see it was uneven then screw BYU on a bunch of calls. Two wrongs don't make a right. Just make the right calls in the first place so you don't feel you need to even things up.

I hope you are right.

Just dont dismiss Creekmur's ability. He has started close to 20 games in the Pac-10. Its not like he was just good in HS.

But its irrelevant since its not going to happen. Just throwing something out there.

Yeah, we were definitely spoiled in the Michigan game. These guys weren't biased they just couldn't figure out how they were going to call the game.

Kane's foul wasn't intentional, but it was pretty careless and I don't have a problem with the flagrant 2 after watching the replay this morning.

This was mentioned upthread I believe, but it's important to understand that the Flagrant 1 and Flagrant 2 rules do not include anything about intent.

Flagrant 1 is "illegal, non-excessive contact above the shoulders". Flagrant 2 is "excessive" contact.

Per that terminology, I think the call on Kane was correct. Intentional or not, that was excessive contact.

I AM SO FREAKIN' JACKED THAT IT IS BASKETBALL SEASON!

Also, anyone else just want to tailgate Saturday through Monday? Ok Good, you bring the booze and I will bring the me.

I cannot believe we won that game. Being on the East coast, I had to turn off the game at half so I could wake up for work. Seeing how BYU was just hitting everything, I didn't think ISU could pull it off. What a great morning it was for me to pick up my phone, go to score center and see Iowa State highlighted as the winner. This team has grit.

It looks bad. But if you watch the rest of the game, how many times did Mika bring the ball up around his shoulders? Multiple times, so I think Kane anticipated this and obviously the rest is history.

Congrats to the team and coaches on a great win in tough venue!

It's nice to have a couple of tough environments in the pre-conference schedule to test/develop the mental aspects of the game, particularly playing through questionable calls. Good prep for the KU games...

Was it excessive, maybe? But under the basket against a 6'-10" 230 lb guy, you have to go at him hard or you'll be posterized. Had he gotten all ball, it still might not have been enough to jar it loose.

He poked him in the ******* eye. Yes it was excessive contact. I don't think it was intentional, and I agree with you that you've got to go hard, but this is pretty well the definition of excessive, aside from a punch.
