Burton

A part of me kind of wanted to see the game go longer, so Prohm would have had to put Burton back in. I wonder what his mindset would be like after having to sit for most of the 2nd half because he wasn't playing well enough. The Gonzaga game proved he can turn it on during the game, after not being at his best.
The only difference between the Zags 2nd half and any other game is that his shots were falling in the Zags game.

In fairness to him, he's not made to be what we're asking him to do. It's easy to sit back and say "take it to the rim" but the fact of the matter is he's a big guard being asked to be a power forward.
If we are going to switch to this 4 guard lineup I want Burton to start acting like a guard. He is our X factor and our best mismatch. If we want to knock off the top teams we need him to get a lot of points.

I'll be honest, the similarities in work ethic on the court to Jameel McKay are uncanny. I've never been a huge fan of both. Not bad players, just seem to take plays off.

I don't think Thomas plays well with Naz. I don't think there are any personal issues but I think it's more of an issue that they are both 2 guards. I don't think that it's any surprise that Thomas broke out last year when Naz was hurt.

I absolutely love both of them but I'd start Babb and bring one of Thomas/Naz off the bench.

On a different note, Monte and Donovan Jackson play really well together and I love when he's in there because I think Jackson is our best perimeter defender.

I'd start Monte, Naz, Babb, Burton and Young and bring Jackson, Thomas and Bowie off bench and give Holden spot minutes. We're deep enough to press all game and force the issue a bit. We're not fun to watch when we get into a half court game.

If you think Naz and Matt shouldn't start together, I would have Naz off the bench. Great energy and spark, but Matt is a better all around player

They could have played overtime until June and I didn't want to see Burton back in that game..

It is still early in the season, but the earlier returns might suggest that maybe Prohm misplayed the psychology game with Burton by hyping him up preseason and saying how he needs to "be the man" much like Georges was last year. That type of pressure works with some, backfires with others.

Burton isn't a guard and he isn't forward. He's a mismatch. He doesn't match up well with either.
His advantage is he needs to be a tougher match up for the opponent. I think at his best you get fouls from both sides.

If we can get 20 high energy minutes from him a night. It will result in starter production in condensed time plus shortening the opponents rotation by drawing a ton of fouls.

burton has been an enigma his entire career. high school, prep school, back to high school, marquette, and now us.

you see a kid with those kind of physical gifts and skill and it makes your head hurt figuring out how he can be so ineffective.

I kinda of like Burton myself. He can be a real beast. People seem to forget he played a pretty big part in our early wins. Sure he has a few consistency issues and may be in a slump but if he finds his stride with Young and Babb coming along he could be a big force down the stretch. I'd rather give him the benefit of doubt opposed to trashing him and other players. It's only the first conference game for chrissakes.

His problem is he makes a mistake then makes 3 more to try to make up for it. Then he gives up. He also needs to realize when his shot isn't fallling he needs to step up and do other things to help his team. If he starts out shooting hot there is no stopping him, once he gets cold he has a hard time getting back going.

Production wins the day.

Naz and Burton are both really inconsistent players offensively game to game. Both have the ability to go off against any opponent and both have shown that they can lay an egg on any given night. There bad games can be fatal because they don't know when to dial it back. It is key that CSP figures out a way to minimize the bad nights. If that means one or the other sitting for large stretches and giving more minutes to Babb or Jackson, than they need to accept that. When Naz or Burton are rolling, we need to ride their hot hand.

He needs some good coaching
