Burton Article

Integrating Burton may be Prohm's second big test. The first was integrating himself into such a talented and successful team.
I think he's had other tests as well. Integrating Nader, Thomas, and Cooke into the rotation was a decent test as well. The fact that he's worked Naz and Cooke in off rehab is pretty remarkable. He had no choice, but it was successful in how it was accomplished.

Burton could be one of the best players in school history, but that's an unfair expectation. He does have abilities though that few others have. Somebody told me in practice he has been okay but not great. He's athletic but doesn't have a real great first step. That was back in October so maybe things have gotten better since then. We need to have realistic expectations, but it's really hard to look at what he could be and think why not now.

We need some muscle in the interior badly. Hopefully he can add that.

Your "first step" can fall off knowing you won't play meaningful basketball for over two months.

Yea, with the twitch Deonte has in his legs, I'm not concerned about his first step.

Practice? You're talking about practice!

I'm not at all concerned about Burton's first step. I think this is a good time to look again at what he can do in a game, even though it was just summer league. He shows a great handle (check out the nasty crossovers from his high school clipsP, makes some nice passes, hitting from 3 as well as off the drive and, of course, he can sky on the dunks. Oh yeah, looks like his first step is not an issue for blowing by people.

Athletically and skill-wise, he reminds me of a shorter Royce White though, of course, the proof will be in the pudding. There's a reason he was picked pre-season as Big XII Newcomer of the Year. He's going to get some major minutes once he's eligible.

A lack of a first step just would just mean that he has a harder time creating his own shot in half court offense. Who knows if that report is even true, but if it is, it just means that he will need to score on fast breaks, lobs, garbage buckets, etc.

That's pretty much what I have in mind for him anyway.

Uh yes he is. He's being asked to play defense and rebound for 10 minutes a game. 15 if there's foul trouble. At this point in his career anything else will be gravy.

Yes, it sure will be interesting. Buzz really hyped him and Wojo hardly played him. Guessing we get something in between the two, maybe?

Hard to judge what kind of player Burton will be once he steps on the court for ISU based off his Freshman season and half his sophmore one with a new coach, system and going through his family issues.
DB was considered a raw prospect coming out of the prep ranks, more of an athlete than player, anyways. I would hope Burton has used his Red Shirt work to refine his skill to unlock the potential Buzz was praising him with at Marquette. If he does, he could be a real impact player this year and next.

I think he'll play quite a bit, but he's going to have to earn it over guys like Nader, Thomas, and Cooke. We're not exactly struggling to fill the 200 available minutes with talented guys without him.

He'll play plenty, you're wrong.

Yes he will. He played almost 13 minutes/game as a freshman at Marquette, so 15 minutes/game is hardly a stretch. I think he'll play more SF than 2-guard which should allow the starting front line to get more rest and be more effective.
