Can anyone tell me what the trip, via car or even train would be like from Boston to NYC if we end up there? Never been out that direction but may have a way to get to Boston.

The drive isn't bad, at around 4 hours without accounting for traffic. You'd obviously want to avoid typical 'rush hour' times if possible.
Train would probably be a little quicker. Amtrak is not cheap though - if you don't want to drive you should take a look at flights into EWR, JFK and LGA too. Costs for Amtrak may be similar to flights; IMHO, given the same cost and travel time, Amtrak is still preferable for comfort and avoiding airport hassles. Plus, the train stations are all right in the city so you don't have to deal with a cab ride from the airport.
What is the check in like for a train? Never taken one, but I'm assuming its not as bad as airports.

I went to a Red Sox game at Fenway this summer and the took a train from Boston to New York to watch them play in Yankee Stadium. Then I took a train from New York to DC. Train travel on east coast is the only way to go! Very comfortable and very relaxing.
Absolutely agree! I live right outside DC and have had to go to NY, Philadelphia, NJ and other places for work, and it's the only way to go. No security, get on the train and go. They have a food car, a quiet car, and every seat has places to plug in electronics. And if you get your tickets as early as possible, they will be cheaper, so always get them as early as you can! Hope that helps.
If the Big XII gets two teams in BCS bowls, I think the Holiday bowl is a possibility.
