Born or Converted ISU Fan

Iowa City High School Grad, blindly followed UI to Rose Bowl, Holiday Bowl.

Used to be that "I'll pull for ISU when they are not playing Iowa" guy until my sophomore year at ISU. Stay true to your school.

Converted, but at a young age. Family are all die hard Hawks. Started out a hawk in the Hansen, Gannon, Carfino days. Got a little older and realized how hawk fans acted and thought and quickly became a clone fan.

While the conversions are nice...

IMO Born Fan > Converted Fan....

Discuss (not sure I really believe that but thought I'd throw it out there to stew some conversation)

Born and raised in Ames!!

Didn't leave until I moves to Arizona for a few years after graduating from ISU.

Born Cyclone fan, although I still rooted for the Hawks when they weren't playing the Clones. When my Bro' went to ISU during my Jr Hi years, my "never graduated from college" cousins started being extremely obnoxious about their Hawkeye allegiences (Olsen through Fry years). They made excuses all the time whenever the Hawks lost or if the FB score was even close. I have hated EIU ever since - (BTW, this hatred intensified when I attended ISU).

I am surprised at the number of "converted" fans. While that is awesome that people came to the good guys, it is also somewhat disturbing they are outnumbering the "born" fans.

Grew up near Dubuque. Parents hated sports so I did not care. Saw an NCAA tury game with Thigpen and Co. I actually had to ask my dad who Iowa State was. All I have ever hear of was the Hawks. Get this I was 11 years old. That is how bias the media was back then. I never looked back after that.

Nope - born fan is more often indoctrinated and the reason for the existence of about 90% of hawk fans.

However, in ISU's case, if you can be born into being an ISU fan and have conitnued to be one for any significant amount of time - you deserve some serious credit. That can be said of just about any long time ISU fan, actually.

Ok - fans are fans, glad to have everyone we can get. The first line was just my pot-shot at iowa.

I would argue the opposite. Like being born into wealth or making it yourself!

It's not surprising, our fan base has grown in recent years and it's not from people who were born ISU fans. It's from default Hawk fans who have finally questioned why the heck they cheer for Iowa & also a lot of students who start at ISU change allegiances.

My parents were big Cyclone fans but we moved to Florida when I was a toddler. Growing up in Florida I was a huge Gator fan but cheared for both Iowa and Iowa State whenever they were on TV. Even went to a couple of Gator Bowls Iowa played in, or maybe it was one... I moved up to Norwalk, IA my senior year of HS, went to couple of both Iowa and Iowa State games that year and went back down to G'Ville for college... Anyhow, transfered to Iowa State from G'ville my junior year of college, pretty much made me a Cyclone fan...

Crap. A fan is a fan. I guarantee I love ISU and hate the Hawks just as much as ANY born ISU fan.

Also, we need to make more 'converted' fans if we are going to take the next step as a program.

Why are you posting so small.

Aside - my first "care" for ISU was when LaFester when haywire on the hawks in '87. As a then hawk fan, hated it then - relish the moment now.

Born and raised a Hawk fan in Eastern Iowa. Saw the light freshman year at ISU and haven't looked back. Still irks my Hawk family:)

Ditto for me.. cept Ive been able to convert my cousin to the Cardinal and Red.. though another cousin goes to Iowa.. My parents dont really have an allegiance.. my mom towards UNI, but otherwise ISU
