Boone or Marshalltown?

I am always amazed at the level of Ames exceptalism from those that live there. Even as someone that was born and raised in Ames, I can't think of a reason to move back there now that I live in West Des Moines. It's just a small town with a college. And a rather weirdly, liberal one at that...

HERE COMES THE CAVE!

I'm not sure what my city did to all of you guys, but there is nothing wrong with living in Boone.

Same with Marshalltown. That said, I'd live in Ames and commute to either if I had the option.

BTW - Don't listen to 3TrueFans, his daughter keeps spending the night here and he doesn't like it.

if you like a faster lifestyle---take job in boone and live in ames

or if you like slower lifestyle----take job in marshalltown and live in conrad (15 mins north of mtown) if you are into small towns. nice people. no crime. and you get to eat at 'that place' restaurant whenever you want.

This is actually good advice. I've heard good things about the Conrad area schools.

West of North Dakota, south of Lincoln way. It goes by a third name as well(can't remember).... I have a hell of a time remembering them all.

Technically wouldn't that be west of South Dakota?

I have a buddy that lives in that neighborhood and coincidentally enough his wife works in Boone. Nice neighborhood.

Might need a place to crash in Ames until I get my house sold up here. Anybody have a spare room? I'll pay my share of rent and utilities, my bathroom habits aren't that bad, and I always keep the fridge stocked with beer/munchies. I keed, I keed. I appreciate the sound advice from the knowledgeable fanatics here. Hope to run into a few of you a future tailgates or bb games!

It all depends on what your looking for, personally Des Moines would be too big for me. i like Ames because it has many of the amenities of a big city yet still has somewhat of a small town feel to it, plus there are a ton of parks and trees. Des Moines is good if you like the suburb lifestyle.

What's the deal with M-town? House prices average about $60 - $75/sq ft, while in Boone they're more in the $130 - $160 range.

Well since noone really answered this (probably because they can't put it non racist terms) the answer is it feels kinda "Postville" which has to do with the overall feel of the town...

Boone has more of a hillbilly redneck feel to it. Huxley is a bit of a drive but it would be a good place. I have friends in Madrid, nice little town with very small town type people, take that as it is.

I wouldn't move back from West Des Moines, as nice as it is in Ames I find more amenities here, but i sure as hell would live in Ames before Boone or Marshalltown.

I kinda got that impression of Boone as I was driving around town after my interview. I can live anywhere, but my wife would like to live in a bigger city (Ames is big enough). Might have to explore some of the smaller towns mentioned. No matter where, just looking forward to being back in Cyclone country and living within an easy drive to to the game! Next on my list is finding a good tailgate vehicle like the ATM in another thread!

you have heard correct. graduated from BCLUW and lived in conrad for 6 years. really enjoyed it. as for the OP. go with your gut, just figured id throw in my 2 cents

Boone, Marshalltown, Ames......Three peas in a pod except Ames has a University and with that way too high housing cost supported by all the government jobs.

Get a trailer, you can always move.

Completely agree Wesley but I'd get an RV.

You can drive to whatever town you want to live in, stay over night at beautiful Jack Trice, live at the fairgrounds for a week, go on RAGBRAI for a week, stay at the Boone raceway, take it on away football games...
