If you were a hotdog, would you eat yourself? Its a simple question!

I toured a packing plant once and it took a couple of months before I could eat a hotdog or sausage again.

It was well over a year before I attempted "natural casing" hotdogs and sausage.

I just had to wait for some of those images to clear my memory.

When I make them at home I boil them in a hot pot. Those things are small enough they boil fast. I don't really care to grill hot dogs unless they are the bigger ones as hot dogs are already pre-cooked so all you need to do is warm them up. I don't think grilling them really adds any flavor and usually most people burn the outsides if they put them on direct heat. Just need to warm them up is all.

BTW folks, don't go cheap on your hot dogs either. Get beef hot dogs and avoid the ones with mechanically separated chicken in them. A little info on what it is: Mechanically separated chicken for food-Truth! Baiscally if you ever saw the stuff being made it's a paste/slush of all the left over chicken parts they don't use. Plus I think beef hot dogs taste better anyways.

I don't know that I have ever personally boiled a hot dog, but I have certainly consumed them.

I definitly prefer them grilled though... I still give my old roommate crap about thinking boiled hotdogs were a good meal

Let me clarify, I boiled the hot dogs to make chili dogs. I only boil hot dogs when I make chili dogs otherwise the grill is the way to go. I should also mention that if you like hot dogs in your mac & cheese DO NOT boil the hot dogs with the macaroni.

So when you make chili dogs you boil them in a separate pan than the chili???? THAT'S CRAZY TALK!!!!!! Sorry for raising my voice.

Boiling is the ONLY way to make them at home without grilling. The hot-dog cooking hierarchy goes like this:

Grilling > Boiling > Microwave.

End of thread.

Boil 'em to cook em up a bit, then split them down the middle, lengthwise but leave just enough of the halves together so that they stay together (kinda like a hinge). Then fry them up in a bit of butter. Place in bun, add chili, top with onions and jalepeno relish and you're good to go.
