Big12 Coaches Talk Anonymously

I didn't think about possibility of media days. Would makes sense, they could ask at that point (and it's likely it'd be HC's) I thought it might be inquiry made thru sports info/media department requesting comments. (That'd be another route).

I got my printed version of Athlon with these quotes from coaches long before Big 12 Media Days.

If they got their quotes during Big 12 media days, which I was assuming, they must be head coaches, right? I don’t think any assistants made the trip.
Unless they cold-called assistant coaches
This is taken from the print version. I remember CW stressing out about the deadline and a player question he had way back before Spring ball was over. (He does the ISU breakdown)

I didn't think about the likelihood an Athlon segment would be part of the magazine, so obviously done months ahead (as @Aclone alluded).

This is the first year I haven't bought the preseason magazine in quite some time ... strange, considering this the most hype ISU has had in my lifetime. I still might pick it up, just to have it. & consume.

I would love to go on a 20 year run like EIU has enjoyed for the last couple of decades. Lots of 8 and up win seasons, and a poor season is going 7-5.
I realize this is a local perspective, and I grew up in SE Iowa myself—and keep an eye on UI in a “know your enemy” sense.

But I’m gonna go out on a limb and suggest that with CMC at the helm, you set your sights a notch or two higher.

They go into the process of gathering the quotes on Athlon's college football podcast. They aren't 100% clear on it as it sounds like it's something they really don't want to mess up. But the quotes come from their scouting research. They have writers and freelancers who are tasked with gathering scouting reports for every team. They use their sources within every program to gather info about their opponents. Most likely assistant coaches. They aren't calling up the head coaches and saying, "give us the dirt on your opponent". It's part of a more organic conversation.

Speaking of Coach Campbell's lingo and speech, I absolutely love how he always refers to the team as a "football team". Like we might be confusing him with some other sport's coach or something.

Here's a recent quote for reference:

"As we go into camp, I feel like there are 11 guys that I feel like can start right now on our football team now,” Campbell said. “We'll see if I still feel that way two weeks from now, but I think they're guys that through what we saw last year, during the season, what we saw last year through their growth process in practice to what have they done in the weight room for where are they right now? Man, I'd say there are 11 guys that I feel really comfortable with that could or have the ability to start on our football team."

Classic Matt Campbell quote as it contains at least one question.
