Big12 Coaches Talk Anonymously

Breece Hall) and QB (Brock Purdy) are talented but not amazing and the rest of the skill positions are just guys
"What they do on offense is the same thing. On film, the RB (Breece Hall) and QB (Brock Purdy) are talented but not amazing and the rest of the skill positions are just guys. But they’re patient and methodical. They get big on you with their personnel, lots of tight ends and they create broad blocking surfaces. They bother you because no one plays like they do anymore. You’re dealing with unbalanced sets you haven’t seen all season in a spread league."

I whole-heartedly disagree with this idiotic assessment. Breece is the best back in the game, Kolar will be in the race to win the Mackey till the end and Xavier Hutchinson is an absolute stud.

That line needs to be posted in the locker room or on t-shirts as that is some great motivation for the players right there! Saying our best players are not amazing and the rest are "just guys?" Wow, how many of those "just guys" were All-Big 12 last year or preseason?

Is “create broad blocking surfaces” supposed to be a slam?

If so, that’s not how any of this works.

Reporter "Hey Coach Campbell we are trying to keep this an anonymous article, but you're making it difficult by constantly saying things like 'the reality of the situation', 'the process' 'be the best version of yourself that you can be'"

This quote is about Texas Tech, but sounds like something CMC would say:

"This is a huge, huge offseason for them. They went into the portal pretty hard to try to fix things and there’s pressure to win now. That usually means as a coach, when you haven’t won somewhere and don’t have that to point to, you can end up getting outside of your system, outside of your culture. It’s really tricky."

The editor likely deleted, "to be honest with you...."

My money is on Gundy saying that ****. Sometimes his meds get a little out of wack.
Gundy when his meds get a little out of wack.

Takes some "Vitamins" within the first couple minutes of the press conference. Talks about taking a double Ambien and it not working around the 9-10 min mark. Takes a follow up question on it around the 14 minute mark...

Read it an noted this: “What they do on offense is the same thing. On film, the RB (Breece Hall) and QB (Brock Purdy) are talented but not amazing and the rest of the skill positions are just guys.”

Xavier Hutchinson and Charlie Kolar would disagree with that, and so would I.

Pretty spot on frankly. A stingy, bend don't break defensive style that doesn't have to rely on the blitz (which speaks to the strength of a front 7 that's very strong).

I think if we can get a more explosive offense outside of the running game, that's where this team can be a playoff team. Oh and continue the turnovers, we got a lot of those last year. We continue to crush in the turnover margin and we can be a 1 loss big 12 team in league play.

Man, beating OU this year would be great (as it is always great to beat them), but I want Texas more this year.. for reasons that I think are obvious amongst us cyclones. They pissed on the league, time to send them packing. I hope they get the liberty bowl this year or something.

The preface to the article says, Note: These scouting reports come directly from coaching staffs and do not necessarily reflect the views of Athlon's editorial staff.

Who knows who actually said what? This approach allows the Athlon staff to use their associations with head coaches, but also just talk to assistants (and staff) when they don't. The fact that it is this vague and anonymous means that maybe some head coaches actually do provide some of the comments, but I doubt it. And I certainly doubt that Campbell provided anything directly. It might come down to what writers like C-Dubs hear coaches saying off the record.

I often interpret anonymous-coaches roundups like this as if it's one coach providing all comments for a team. The fact the quotes are separated into paragraphs I realize Athlon may have gotten comments from a half-dozen coaches about each/all teams. Of course Athlon can select the most effective ones. (Shorter version: It could come from one or two coaches from each team, and comments on multiple teams - not like one coach for one team).

As much as it pains me to admit, Iowa has been very successful playing the exact same way that we are now. Look at their recruiting, no 5 stars, a few four stars and mainly 3 stars that are willing to work and get better as a player. They play together as a team, everyone does their job and do not try and do more than your job, eliminate silly mistakes and take care of the ball and allow the other team to turn it over and then make them pay.

That is also what ISU has become, and now we are starting to bring in more 4 star recruits to do it even better. I would love to go on a 20 year run like EIU has enjoyed for the last couple of decades. Lots of 8 and up win seasons, and a poor season is going 7-5.
I mean…..Iowa doesn’t hold the patent on that. ANY team that isn’t a blue blood team builds itself up by solid coaching and a bunch of 3 stars working hard and working cohesively to form a true team that works together. You could say the same about KSU, UCF, Utah, Boise, etc.

We were 30th in the country in yards per play last season. 3rd in the Big 12. This grind it out reputation isn't entirely accurate. A healthy Kolar makes a big difference. And yes, we give Hall 25 carries a game, but that's because he's liable to break one for 60+ at any time.

I guess I don’t have a huge problem with it. We have some really solid players, but we don’t really have game breakers that can take the top off of a defense. They probably don’t pop off the screen when watching film.

That's not a slam, it's a compliment. Saying it's difficult to get around our blockers, forcing the defense to go through them. Combined with "getting big on you" he's saying we're more physical than other teams in the league.

Curious if it involved any of the head coaches, or if it was assistants. (Or a mix).
If they got their quotes during Big 12 media days, which I was assuming, they must be head coaches, right? I don’t think any assistants made the trip.
Unless they cold-called assistant coaches

No shame here in this statement. I feel by 2018, we were witnessing Campbell's true identity for ISU with clock killing drives even out of multiple passing plays, playing field position, and ultimately shortening games. Nice to have a potent run game now and not always needing a major day by Purdy to win though.

I didn't think about possibility of media days. Would makes sense, they could ask at that point (and it's likely it'd be HC's) I thought it might be inquiry made thru sports info/media department requesting comments. (That'd be another route).

Speaking of Coach Campbell's lingo and speech, I absolutely love how he always refers to the team as a "football team". Like we might be confusing him with some other sport's coach or something.

Here's a recent quote for reference:

"As we go into camp, I feel like there are 11 guys that I feel like can start right now on our football team now,” Campbell said. “We'll see if I still feel that way two weeks from now, but I think they're guys that through what we saw last year, during the season, what we saw last year through their growth process in practice to what have they done in the weight room for where are they right now? Man, I'd say there are 11 guys that I feel really comfortable with that could or have the ability to start on our football team."
